    Postcolonialism: An Overview

    Get PDF
At present “Postcolonialism” has been a current topic in literary circles. As a genre of contemporary history, post colonialism questions and reinvents the manner in which a culture is being viewed, challenging the narratives expounded during the colonial era. Anthropologically, it records human relations between the colonists and the peoples under colonial rule, seeking to build an understanding of the nature and practice of colonial rule. Colonialism was presented as ‘the extension of civilization’, which ideologically justified the self-ascribed racial and cultural superiority of the Western world over the non-Western world. This paper accomplishes the phenomenon of post-colonialism. It presents general meanings of the post-colonialism theory and gives some information about its advancement and additionally explaining foundation information about essential points of interest of India's colonial past. It at that point focuses on the post-colonial advancement of India which was a British province until 1947

Flood-tolerant rice reduces yield variability and raises expected yield, differentially benefitting socially disadvantaged groups.

Approximately 30% of the cultivated rice area in India is prone to crop damage from prolonged flooding. We use a randomized field experiment in 128 villages of Orissa India to show that Swarna-Sub1, a recently released submergence-tolerant rice variety, has significant positive impacts on rice yield when fields are submerged for 7 to 14 days with no yield penalty without flooding. We estimate that Swarna-Sub1 offers an approximate 45% increase in yields over the current popular variety when fields are submerged for 10 days. We show additionally that low-lying areas prone to flooding tend to be more heavily occupied by people belonging to lower caste social groups. Thus, a policy relevant implication of our findings is that flood-tolerant rice can deliver both efficiency gains, through reduced yield variability and higher expected yield, and equity gains in disproportionately benefiting the most marginal group of farmers

In the present study, out of the total 100 patients studied, 75 patients (75%) were males and majority of patients were in 50-75 age group and complained of dysphagia. It was found that the most common site of incidence of oral cancer in tobacco and betel quid chewers was buccal mucosa. The aim of this study is to further examine the relationship between p53 expression with different histological grades in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSSC) patients from north India. It was found that there was no p53 expression in normal tissues while in oral SCC patients with tobacco and betel quid chewing habit, the percentage of positive cases as well as p53 positivity showed an increase with increasing grade of SCC. The expression of p53 was significantly associated with histological grade in oral cancer in tobacco and betel quid chewers. In case of p53 expression, statistically significant difference in p53 positivity was observed only on comparing well differentiated SCC with poorly differentiated SCC. The expression of p53 was not similar in different sites of oral cavity but was more frequently seen in gingivia, floor of mouth, tongue, and buccal mucosa

    Get PDF
Introduction: Since the 20th century, electric shock torture has become one of the most prevalent methods of torture partly because it produces sequelae that are more challenging to visibly detect, particularly when administered using high voltage and low current. In sexual torture, a wire is wrapped around the head of the penis and a wire electrode is inserted into the urethra. This produces unbearable pain and can lead to urethral strictures with devastating physical and psychological consequences. Objective: To document electric shock torture to genitals as an etiologic agent in urethral stricture and erectile dysfunction amongst survivors of electric torture introducing the term “parrilla urethra” for the electric shock torture urethral stricture. Materials and methods: The study included 40 patients who attended the Department of Urology, Directorate of Health services, Srinagar, Kashmir, India with obstructive lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) / obstructive uroflowmetry between March 2010 and November 2014. All cases had an antecedent of electric shock torture to genitals six months to one year prior to examination. Pre-post psychological impact and well-being was used through Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) scores. Results: The mean age of patients was 35.6 years. Most of the urethral strictures were located in the anterior urethra. Some degree of erectile dysfunction was present in all (100%) of patients. Psychological sequelae including depression, anxiety, acute stress disorder and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder were observed. Patients were treated with standard urethroplasty procedures after addressing the urethral stricture. This improved both physical and psychological sequelae of torture. &nbsp

Cyclin D1 expression of different histological grades in oral squamous cell carcinoma patients from northern India

    Get PDF
Cyclin D1 expression was positive in 35 cases of oral cancer with a Cyclin D1 positivity of 22.16±22.18. The percent-age of positive cases as well as Cyclin D1 positivity showed an increase as the grade of differentiation advanced. No significant association was found between Cyclin D1 positivity and degree of differentiation of tumors (p=0.138). A significant difference in Cyclin D1 positivity was observed (p=0.043) comparing well differentiated (16.61±17.89) and poorly differentiated (37.0±32.51) tumors, as well as between well differentiated (16.61±17.89) and moderately differentiate tumors (24.38±21.93; p=0.002). Similarly, significant difference in Cyclin D1 positivity was observed comparing moderately differentiated (24.38±21.93) and poorly differentiated tumors (37.0±32.51; p=0.043). Cyclin D1 expression was more frequently seen in hard palate (75%), buccal mucosa (67%) and lip (60%) while expression of Cyclin D1 was less frequent in sites like gingiva (0%), tongue (40%) and floor of mouth (43%). There was no association between Cyclin D1 expression and primary site of oral cancer (p=0.528) in tobacco and betel quid chewers of northern India

Broadband spectral and temporal study of Ton 599 during the brightest January 2023 flare

In this work, we provide a detailed analysis of the broadband temporal and spectral properties of the blazar Ton\,599 by using the observations from \emph{Fermi}-LAT and \emph{Swift}-XRT/UVOT telescopes, during its brightest γ\gamma-ray flaring. The one-day bin γ\gamma-ray light curve exhibits multiple substructures with asymmetric and symmetric profiles. Notably, the γ\gamma-ray light curve shows a maximum flux of 3.63×106phcm2s1\rm 3.63 \times 10^{-6}\, ph \,cm^{-2}\,s^{-1} on MJD\,59954.50, which is the highest flux ever observed from this source. The correlation between the γ\gamma-ray flux and γ\gamma-ray spectral indices suggests a moderate harder when the brighter trend. Taking γ\gamma-ray light curve as the reference, a strong correlation is observed with X-ray, optical, and UV energies. Additionally, the γ\gamma-rays and optical/UV emissions exhibit higher variability compared to X-rays. To understand the parameter variation during the active state of the source, we conducted a statistical broadband spectral modelling of the source in 10 flux intervals of equal duration. A one-zone leptonic model involving synchrotron, synchrotron-self-Compton, and external-Compton processes successfully reproduces the broadband SED in each of these flux intervals. We observed that the flux variation during the active state is mainly associated with the variation in the magnetic field and the particle spectral indices.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure

Ineficient water pricing and incentives for conservation

    Get PDF
We use two randomized controlled trials in Bangladesh to study a simple water conservation technology for rice production called "Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD)." Despite proven results in agronomic trials, our first experiment shows that AWD only saves water and increases profits in villages where farmers pay a marginal price for water, but not when they pay fixed seasonal charges. The second RCT randomly distributed debit cards that can be used to pay volumetric prices for irrigation water. This low-cost, scalable intervention causes farmers to place more value on the water-saving technology. Demand for the technology becomes less price-sensitive
