Dynamical subset sampling of quantum error correcting protocols
Quantum error correcting (QEC) stabilizer codes enable protection of quantum
information against errors during storage and processing. Simulation of noisy
QEC codes is used to identify the noise parameters necessary for advantageous
operation of logical qubits in realistic quantum computing architectures.
Typical quantum error correction techniques contain intermediate measurements
and classical feedback that determine the actual noisy circuit sequence in an
instance of performing the protocol. Dynamical subset sampling enables
efficient simulation of such non-deterministic quantum error correcting
protocols for any type of quantum circuit and incoherent noise of low strength.
As an importance sampling technique, dynamical subset sampling allows one to
effectively make use of computational resources to only sample the most
relevant sequences of quantum circuits in order to estimate a protocol's
logical failure rate with well-defined error bars. We demonstrate the
capabilities of dynamical subset sampling with examples from fault-tolerant
(FT) QEC. We show that, in a typical stabilizer simulation with incoherent
Pauli noise of strength , our method can reach a required sampling
accuracy on the logical failure rate with two orders of magnitude fewer samples
than direct Monte Carlo simulation. Furthermore, dynamical subset sampling
naturally allows for efficient simulation of realistic multi-parameter noise
models describing faulty quantum processors. It can be applied not only for QEC
in the circuit model but any noisy quantum computing framework with incoherent
fault operators including measurement-based quantum computation and quantum
networks.Comment: 33 pages, 26 figure

Behavioural reasoning for conditional equations
Object-oriented (OO) programming techniques can be applied to equational specification logics by distinguishing visible data from hidden data (that is, by distinguishing the output of methods from the objects to which the methods apply), and then focusing on the behavioural equivalence of hidden data in the sense introduced by H. Reichel in 1984. Equational specification logics structured in this way are called hidden equational logics, HELs. The central problem is how to extend the specification of a given HEL to a specification of behavioural equivalence in a computationally effective way. S. Buss and G. Roşu showed in 2000 that this is not possible in general, but much work has been done on the partial specification of behavioural equivalence for a wide class of HELs. The OO connection suggests the use of coalgebraic methods, and J. Goguen and his collaborators have developed coinductive processes that depend on an appropriate choice of a cobasis, which is a special set of contexts that generates a subset of the behavioural equivalence relation. In this paper the theoretical aspects of coinduction are investigated, specifically its role as a supplement to standard equational logic for determining behavioural equivalence. Various forms of coinduction are explored. A simple characterisation is given of those HELs that are behaviourally specifiable. Those sets of conditional equations that constitute a complete, finite cobasis for a HEL are characterised in terms of the HEL's specification. Behavioural equivalence, in the form of logical equivalence, is also an important concept for single-sorted logics, for example, sentential logics such as the classical propositional logic. The paper is an application of the methods developed through the extensive work that has been done in this area on HELs, and to a broader class of logics that encompasses both sentential logics and HELs. © 2007 Cambridge University Press.FCT via UIM
eXTRA: A Culturally Enriched Malay Text to Speech System
This paper concerns the incorporation of naturalness into Malay Text-to-Speech (TTS) systems through the addition of a culturally-localized affective component. Previous studies on emotion theories were examined to draw up assumptions about emotions. These studies also include the findings from observations by anthropologists and researchers on culturalspecific emotions, particularly, the Malay culture. These findings were used to elicit the requirements for modeling affect in the TTS that conforms to the people of the Malay culture in Malaysia. The goal is to introduce a novel method for generating Malay expressive speech by embedding a localized ‘emotion layer’ called eXpressive Text Reader Automation Layer, abbreviated as eXTRA. In a pilot project, the prototype is used with Fasih, the first Malay Text-to-Speech system developed by MIMOS Berhad, which can read unrestricted Malay text in four emotions: anger, sadness, happiness and fear. In this paper however, concentration is given to the first two emotions. eXTRA is evaluated through open perception tests by both native and non-native listeners. The results show more than sixty percent of recognition rate, which confirmed the satisfactory performance of the approaches

Survivin the battle against immunosuppression
Improving on the limited success of cancer immunotherapy requires new approaches to inhibit immunosuppressive pathways initiated by tumor cells to “escape” protective immunity. One unique approach utilizes Salmonella for systemic delivery of inhibitory RNA, targeting the immunosuppressive molecule Stat3, and a Survivin vaccine to suppress growth of aggressive murine tumors
Taking Blockchain Seriously
In the present techno-political moment it is clear that ignoring or dismissing the hype surrounding blockchain is unwise, and certainly for regulatory authorities and governments who must keep a grip on the technology and those promoting it, in order to ensure democratic accountability and regulatory legitimacy within the blockchain ecosystem and beyond. Blockchain is telling (and showing) us something very important about the evolution of capital and neoliberal economic reason, and the likely impact in the near future on forms and patterns of work, social organization, and, crucially, on communities and individuals who lack influence over the technologies and data that increasingly shape and control their lives. In this short essay I introduce some of the problems in the regulation of blockchain and offer counter-narratives aimed at cutting through the hype fuelling the ascendency of this most contemporary of technologies
