    X-TREAM project: Task 1b - Survey of the state-of-the-art numerical techniques for solving coupled non-linear multi-physics equations

    Nowadays, the precise modeling of a nuclear reactor core is a challenge. This task involves several aspects, from the computational power needed to perform simulations, to the physics and analysis of the outcome. The need to better understand the physical phenomena is critical in order to quantify and qualify nuclear safety parameters. Currently, substantial research has been done in order to optimize the prediction capabilities of coupled codes. The need to better understand the multi-physics coupling between the neutronics and the thermal-hydraulics is required. In this report, state-of-the art of current methods and numerical techniques used in coupled codes are highlighted. A better understanding of the numerical schemes will allows selecting an appropriate algorithm to be implemented in POLCA-T. POLCA-T is the coupled code developed by Westinghouse that currently uses an explicit approach to couple the neutronics (POLCA7) and thermal-hydraulics (RIGEL). The final objective is to implement the concept of the Jacobian-free Newton-Krylov method, which will be used for solving the nonlinear equations which rise from the coupled solution

    [EN] Espai Verd, work of the CSPT studio architectural lead by Antonio Cortés Ferrando, is a singular building of modular architecture in space, located in the neighbourhood of Benimaclet, Valencia. It dates back to the beginning of the 1970s and it was achieved by the system of owners cooperative. The main concept, the starting point, is to materialize dwellings with private garden, placed inside a high multi-family building. Therefore, the main characteristic of this work is the integration of nature as part of the building and the necessary development of a constructive system capable of containing vegetation, highlighting the use of exposed concrete in situ and prefabricated. The design was influenced by the architectural trends at that time, brutalism and megastructure, in addition to having multiple individual references as the works of Moshe Safdie, Ricardo Bofill and José Antonio Coderch, among others. The text shows some strategies and decisions taken in this project that determine the formal aspect of the building and, at the same time, reveal the intense interaction between nature and concrete in Espai Verd. [ES] Espai Verd, obra del estudio de arquitectura CSPT bajo la dirección de Antonio Cortés Ferrando, es una singular edificación de arquitectura modular en el espacio, situada en el barrio de Benimaclet, Valencia. Data de principios de la década de los 80, y fue realizada mediante el sistema de cooperativa de propietarios. El concepto principal, del que parte el proyecto, es el de materializar viviendas con jardín individual, dispuestas en un edificio plurifamiliar en altura. Consecuentemente, la principal característica de la obra es la integración de la naturaleza como parte intrínseca de la edificación y el necesario desarrollo de un sistema constructivo capaz de albergar la vegetación, donde destaca el empleo de hormigón visto, tanto in situ como prefabricado. El diseño fue influenciado por las tendencias arquitectónicas propias de la época, el brutalismo y las megaestructuras, además de contar con numerosos referentes particulares como obras de Moshe Safdie, Ricardo Bofill y José Antonio Coderch, entre otros.     Improvements in Multi-physics and Multi-scale Methodologies for Safety-related Investigations of Pressurized Water Reactors within the NURESIM Platform

    The malSource dataset: quantifying complexity and code reuse in malware development

    During the last decades, the problem of malicious and unwanted software (malware) has surged in numbers and sophistication. Malware plays a key role in most of today's cyberattacks and has consolidated as a commodity in the underground economy. In this paper, we analyze the evolution of malware from 1975 to date from a software engineering perspective. We analyze the source code of 456 samples from 428 unique families and obtain measures of their size, code quality, and estimates of the development costs (effort, time, and number of people). Our results suggest an exponential increment of nearly one order of magnitude per decade in aspects such as size and estimated effort, with code quality metrics similar to those of benign software. We also study the extent to which code reuse is present in our dataset. We detect a significant number of code clones across malware families and report which features and functionalities are more commonly shared.     The distribution of sensory bristles on the thorax of Diptera (true flies) provides a useful model for the study of the evolution of spatial patterns. Large bristles called macrochaetes are arranged into species-specific stereotypical patterns determined via spatially discrete expression of the proneural genes achaete-scute (ac-sc). In Drosophila ac-sc expression is regulated by transcriptional activation at sites where bristle precursors develop and by repression outside of these sites. Three genes, extramacrochaetae (emc), hairy (h) and stripe (sr), involved in repression have been documented. Here we demonstrate that in Drosophila, the repressor genes emc and h, like sr, play an essential role in the development of structures forming part of the flight apparatus. In addition we find that, in Calliphora vicina a species diverged from D. melanogaster by about 100 Myr, spatial expression of emc, h and sr is conserved at the location of development of those structures. Based on these findings we argue, first, that the role emc, h and sr in development of the flight apparatus preceded their activities for macrochaete patterning; second, that species-specific variation in activation and repression of ac-sc expression is evolving in parallel to establish a unique distribution of macrochaetes in each species
