    Product Integral Representations of Wilson Lines and Wilson Loops, and Non-Abelian Stokes Theorem

    We make use of product integrals to provide an unambiguous mathematical representation of Wilson line and Wilson loop operators. Then, drawing upon various properties of product integrals, we discuss such properties of these operators as approximating them with partial sums, their convergence, and their behavior under gauge transformations. We also obtain a surface product integral representation for the Wilson loop operator. The result can be interpreted as the non-abelian version of Stokes theorem.Comment: 20 pages, LaTe

    Deterrence policies and asylum seekers: the case of Australia

    The basic tenets of the international refugee protection regime, set out in the UN\u27s 1951 Convention and the 1967 Protocol, grant individuals the right to seek asylum, but do not provide for laws obliging signatory states to grant asylum. This inherent paradox allows signatory states ongoing manoeuvre to prevent would-be asylum seekers from accessing protection in their territories. To this end, countries of the global north have designed and implemented a range of measures aimed at deterring onshore asylum seekers - privileging border control over refugee protection. This paper examines the effectiveness of deterrence measures taken by Australia. It argues that deterrence measures and attendant political rhetoric are not only contrary to international humanitarian obligations, but obscure empirically grounded understandings of forced migration as a complex social phenomenon, and as such are problematic in terms of meeting their publicly stated objectives of stopping on-shore asylum seeking in the long term

    An Approach for Minimizing Spurious Errors in Testing ADA Tasking Programs

    We propose an approach for detecting deadlocks and race conditions in Ada tasking software. It is based on an extension to Petri net-based techniques, where a concurrent program is modeled as a Petri net and a reachability graph is then derived and analyzed for desired information. In this approach, Predicate-Action subnets representing Ada programming constructs are described, where predicates and actions are attached to transitions. Predicates are those found in decision statements. Actions involve updating the status of the variables that affect the tasking behavior of the program and updating the Read and Write sets of shared variables. The shared variables are those occurring in sections of the program, called concurrency zones, related to the transitions. Modeling of a tasking program is accomplished by using the basic subnets as building blocks in translating only tasking-related statements and connecting them to produce the total Predicate-Action net model augmented with sets of shared variables. An augmented reachability graph is then derived by executing the net model. Deadlocks and race conditions are detected by searching the nodes of this graph. The main advantage offered by this approach is that the Predicate-Action extension of the net leads to pruning infeasible paths in the reachability graph and, thus, reducing the spurious error reports encountered in previous approaches. Also, this approach enables a partial handling of loops in a practical way. Implementation issues are also discussed in the paper

    Tests of relativity using a microwave resonator

    The frequencies of a cryogenic sapphire oscillator and a hydrogen maser are compared to set new constraints on a possible violation of Lorentz invariance. We determine the variation of the oscillator frequency as a function of its orientation (Michelson-Morley test) and of its velocity (Kennedy-Thorndike test) with respect to a preferred frame candidate. We constrain the corresponding parameters of the Mansouri and Sexl test theory to δβ+1/2=(1.5±4.2)×109\delta - \beta + 1/2 = (1.5\pm 4.2) \times 10^{-9} and βα1=(3.1±6.9)×107\beta - \alpha - 1 = (-3.1\pm 6.9) \times 10^{-7} which is equivalent to the best previous result for the former and represents a 30 fold improvement for the latter.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letters (October 3, 2002

    Investigation of phonon behavior in Pr2NiMnO6 by micro-Raman spectroscopy

    The temperature dependence of phonon excitations and the presence of spin phonon coupling in polycrystalline Pr2NiMnO6 samples were studied using micro-Raman spectroscopy and magnetometry. Magnetic properties show a single ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic transition at 228 K and a saturation magnetization close to 4.95 \muB/f.u.. Three distinct Raman modes at 657, 642, and 511 cm-1 are observed. The phonon excitations show a clear hardening due to anharmonicity from 300 K down to 10 K. Further, temperature dependence of the 657 cm-1 mode shows only a small softening. This reflects the presence of a relatively weak spin-phonon coupling in Pr2NiMnO6 contrary to other double perovskites previously studied.Comment: 10 pages, 4 fig

    A Routine Electroencephalography Monitoring System for Automated Sports-Related Concussion Detection

    Cases of concussions in the United States keep increasing and are now up to 2 million to 3 million incidents per year. Although concussions are recoverable and usually not life-threatening, the degree and rate of recovery may vary depending on age, severity of the injury, and past concussion history. A subsequent concussion before full recovery may lead to more-severe brain damage and poorer outcomes. Electroencephalography (EEG) recordings can identify brain dysfunctionality and abnormalities, such as after a concussion. Routine EEG monitoring can be a convenient method for reducing unreported injuries and preventing long-term damage, especially among groups with a greater risk of experiencing a concussion, such as athletes participating in contact sports. Because of the relative availability of EEG compared to other brain-imaging techniques (e.g., functional magnetic resonance imaging), the use of EEG monitoring is growing for various neurological disorders. In this longitudinal study, EEG was analyzed from 4 football athletes before their athletic season and also within 7 days of concussion. Compared to a control group of 4 additional athletes, a concussion was detected with up to 99.5% accuracy using EEG recordings in the Theta-Alpha band. Classifiers that use data from only a subset of the EEG electrodes providing reliable detection are also proposed. The most effective classifiers used EEG recordings from the Central scalp region in the Beta band and over the Temporal scalp region using the Theta-Alpha band. This proof-ofconcept study and preliminary findings suggest that EEG monitoring may be used to identify a sports-related concussion occurrence with a high level of accuracy and thus reduce the chance of unreported concussion

    Constraint-based modeling identifies new putative targets to fight colistin-resistant A. baumannii infections

    Acinetobacter baumannii is a clinical threat to human health, causing major infection outbreaks worldwide. As new drugs against Gram-negative bacteria do not seem to be forthcoming, and due to the microbial capability of acquiring multi-resistance, there is an urgent need for novel therapeutic targets. Here we have derived a list of new potential targets by means of metabolic reconstruction and modelling of A. baumannii ATCC 19606. By integrating constraint-based modelling with gene expression data, we simulated microbial growth in normal and stressful conditions (i.e. following antibiotic exposure). This allowed us to describe the metabolic reprogramming that occurs in this bacterium when treated with colistin (the currently adopted last-line treatment) and identify a set of genes that are primary targets for developing new drugs against A. baumannii, including colistin-resistant strains. It can be anticipated that the metabolic model presented herein will represent a solid and reliable resource for the future treatment of A. baumannii infections
