    The Space Weather Atmosphere Models and Indices (SWAMI) project: Overview and first results

Available on open access from EDP Open via the DOI in this recordSpace weather driven atmospheric density variations affect low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites during all phases of their operational lifetime. Rocket launches, re-entry events and space debris are also similarly affected. A better understanding of space weather processes and their impact on atmospheric density is thus critical for satellite operations as well as for safety issues. The Horizon 2020 project Space Weather Atmosphere Model and Indices (SWAMI) project, which started in January 2018, aims to enhance this understanding by: Developing improved neutral atmosphere and thermosphere models, and combining these models to produce a new whole atmosphere model. Developing new geomagnetic activity indices with higher time cadence to enable better representation of thermospheric variability in the models, and improving the forecast of these indices. The project stands out by providing an integrated approach to the satellite neutral environment, in which the main space weather drivers are addressed together with model improvement. The outcomes of SWAMI will provide a pathway to improved space weather services as the project will not only address the science issues, but also the transition of models into operational services. The project aims to develop a unique new whole atmosphere model, by extending and blending the Unified Model (UM), which is the Met Office weather and climate model, and the Drag Temperature Model (DTM), which is a semi-empirical model which covers the 120–1500 km altitude range. A user-focused operational tool for satellite applications shall be developed based on this. In addition, improved geomagnetic indices shall be developed and shall be used in the UM and DTM for enhanced nowcast and forecast capability. In this paper, we report on progress with SWAMI to date. The UM has been extended from its original upper boundary of 85 km to run stably and accurately with a 135 km lid. Developments to the UM radiation scheme to enable accurate performance in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere are described. These include addition of non-local thermodynamic equilibrium effects and extension to include the far ultraviolet and extreme ultraviolet. DTM has been re-developed using a more accurate neutral density observation database than has been used in the past. In addition, we describe an algorithm to develop a new version of DTM driven by geomagnetic indices with a 60 minute cadence (denoted Hp60) rather than 3-hourly Kp indices (and corresponding ap indices). The development of the Hp60 index, and the Hp30 and Hp90 indices, which are similar to Hp60 but with 30 minute and 90 minute cadences, respectively, is described, as is the development and testing of neural network and other machine learning methods applied to the forecast of geomagnetic indices.European Union Horizon 202

    Exposure to animals and risk of oligoarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis: a multicenter case-control study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>An inverse association between early contact with microbial compounds and respiratory allergies is well established. The protective effect of infant contact with animals was also shown for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We aimed to test the association between animal contact in infancy and oligoarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (OA JIA).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Parents of children with OA JIA registered at the Hospital for Pediatric Rheumatology in Garmisch-Partenkirchen were asked to complete a questionnaire. Children who underwent strabismus surgery at six referral centers for ophthalmology served as controls. Children age 6 to 18 years born in Germany without malformations were included (238 cases; response 89% and 832 controls; response 86%). Data were analyzed using logistic regression models after adjusting for potential confounders.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Neither place of living (urban vs. rural area), living on a farm, nor regular farm animal (adjusted odds ratio 0.79; 95% confidence interval 0.42-1.47) or pet contact (0.79; 0.55-1.14) during infancy were clearly related to case status. Allergic rhinitis was inversely related to OA JIA (0.57; 0.34-0.95).</p> <p>Neither place of living (urban vs. rural area), living on a farm, nor regular farm animal (adjusted odds ratio 0.79; 95% confidence interval 0.42-1.47) or pet contact (0.79; 0.55-1.14) during infancy were related to case status. This finding is consistent with previous findings for diabetes mellitus type 1 but contradicts results for IBD and SLE.</p

    Association mapping of malting quality traits in UK spring and winter barley cultivar collections

    Key Message: Historical malting quality data was collated from UK national and recommended list trial data and used in a GWAS. 25 QTL were identified, with the majority from spring barley cultivar sets. Abstract: In Europe, the most economically significant use of barley is the production of malt for use in the brewing and distilling industries. As such, selection for traits related to malting quality is of great commercial interest. In order to study the genetic basis of variation for malting quality traits in UK cultivars, a historical set of trial data was collated from national and recommended list trials from the period 1988 to 2016. This data was used to estimate variety means for 20 quality related traits in 451 spring barley cultivars, and 407 winter cultivars. Genotypes for these cultivars were generated using iSelect 9k and 50k genotyping platforms, and a genome wide association scan performed to identify malting quality quantitative trait loci (QTL). 24 QTL were identified in spring barley cultivars, and 2 from the winter set. A number of these correspond to known malting quality related genes but the remainder represents novel genetic variation that is accessible to breeders for the genetic improvement of new cultivars.Mark E.     Existence of a Tribo-Modified Surface Layer on SBR Elastomers: Balance Between Formation and Wear of the Modified Layer

    In most of the tribological contacts, the composition and tribological properties of the original interface will change during use. The tribo-films, with modified properties compared to the bulk, are dynamic structures that play a significant role in friction. The existence of a tribo-modified surface layer and its importance on the overall friction of elastomers has been shown both theoretically and experimentally before. The characteristics of the modified surface layer deserve specific attention since the tribological properties of elastomers in contact with a rough counter-surface are determined by these modified surfaces together with the properties of bulk of the material. Both the formation of the modified layer and the break down (wear) of it are of importance in determining the existence and thickness of the tribo-modified layer. In this study, the importance of the wear is emphasized by comparing two styrene butadiene rubber-based elastomers in contact with a granite sphere. A current status of perception of the removal and the stability of the modified surface layers on rubbers is introduced as well as experimental work related to this matter and discussion within literature. Pin-on-disk friction tests are performed on two SBR-based samples in contact with a granite sphere under controlled environmental conditions to form the modified surface layer. Although the hysteresis part of the friction force which has a minor contribution in the overall friction is not markedly different, the total measured friction coefficient differs significantly. Mechanical changes both inside and outside the wear track are determined by atomic force microscope nano-indentations at different timescales to examine the modified surface layer on the test samples. The specific wear rates of the two tribo-systems are compared, and the existence of the modified surface layer, the different measured friction coefficient and the running-in distances toward steady-state friction are explained considering different wear rates.     Reduced oxidative phosphorylation and proton efflux suggest reduced capillary blood supply in skeletal muscle of patients with dermatomyositis and polymyositis: A quantitative 31P-magnetic resonance spectroscopy and MRI study

    Quantitative MRI and phosphorus magnetic resonance spectroscopy (31P-MRS) were used to investigate skeletal muscle metabolism in vivo in patients with dermatomyositis (DM) and polymyositis (PM) in order to evaluate the role of mitochondrial abnormalities in the pathogenesis and clinical expression of these conditions. Nine patients with DM (mean age ± SD, 57 ± 14 years) and five with PM (42 ± 12 years) and with age at disease onset 53 ± 16 and 38 ± 12 years, respectively, were included in the study together with 18 agematched controls. Post-exercise 31P-MRS indices of muscle oxidative metabolism were all impaired in DM and PM. In both groups of patients, the phosphocreatine and adenosine diphosphate recovery half-times were almost twice as long as in controls (P &lt; 0.05 for each variable) and the maximum rate of mitochondrial ATP production was half that found in normal subjects (P &lt; 0.001). The rate of proton efflux from muscle fibres was significantly reduced in DM (P &lt; 0.001) and PM (P = 0.02). The impairment of 31P-MRS recovery indices in DM and PM patients was similar to that found in a group of 10 patients with a primary mitochondrial disorder that showed a normal proton efflux rate. There was no correlation between the MRS-detectable abnormalities and the degree of inflammation or fatty infiltration of the muscle, as measured by MRI. The in vivo findings in DM and PM patients indicate impaired muscle aerobic function, which, considering the reduced proton efflux, is likely to be secondary to an impaired blood supply. Our results suggest that the abnormal mitochondria seen in some muscle biopsies are unlikely to be the primary cause of the oxidative insufficiency in these patients
