    Relating the Quality of Life and Support Needs of a young man with Cerebral Palsy and the Biopsychosocial Health of his primary caregiver

    [ES] El propósito general de este estudio cualitativo es conocer la relación existente entre las necesidades de apoyo y la calidad de vida de un joven con parálisis cerebral, con la salud biopsicosocial de su cuidadora principal. En consecuencia, se trata de un estudio de caso único donde se implementan la Escala de Intensidad de Apoyos (SIS) y la escala INICO FEAPS sobre calidad de vida, a un joven de 23 años con parálisis cerebral discinética, adquirida a los dos años a causa de una negligencia médica. En cuanto a la cuidadora principal, esta es la madre del joven, de 58 años, que se dedica exclusivamente al cuidado de su hijo, y a quien se implementan la Escala de Carga del Cuidador, el Cuestionario de Salud General de Goldberg y la Escala de Satisfacción con el Cuidado. Los resultados obtenidos muestran un nivel global intermedio de necesidades de apoyo, además de necesidades extensas de apoyo conductual, y un nivel bajo-medio de calidad de vida en el joven, así como sobrecarga intensa acusa del cuidado, posibles problemas clínicos y un nivel intermedio de satisfacción en la cuidadora. Esto evidencia la necesidad de una intervención inmediata que reduzca las tareas del cuidado que recaen sobre la madre, diversificando y perfeccionando los apoyos, y favoreciendo la mejora personal de ambos. Además, la cuidadora necesita ayuda profesional que le ayude a hacer frente a la sobrecarga, insatisfacción y problemas clínicos que presenta, y el joven para aprender a reconocer y gestionar sus emociones y mejorar así sus problemas conductuales. [ENG] The overall purpose of this qualitative study is to determine the relationship between the support needs and quality of life of a young man with cerebral palsy and the biopsychosocial health of his primary caregiver. Consequently, this is a single case study where the Supports Intensity Scale (SIS) and the INICO-FEAPS scale on quality of life are implemented in a 23-year-old young man with dyskinetic cerebral palsy, acquired at age two due to medical negligence. As for the main caregiver, this is the 58-year-old mother of the young man, who is exclusively dedicated to the care of her son, and to whom the Caregiver Burden Scale, the Goldberg General Health Questionnaire and the Satisfaction with Caregiving Scale are implemented. The results obtained show an overall intermediate level of support needs, in addition to extensive behavioral support needs, and a low-medium level of quality of life in the young man, as well as intense caregiver burden, possible clinical problems and an intermediate level of caregiver satisfaction. This evidences the need for immediate intervention to reduce the caregiving tasks that fall on the mother, diversifying and perfecting the supports, and favoring the personal improvement of both. In addition, the caregiver needs professional help to help her cope with the overload, dissatisfaction and clinical problems she presents, and the young man to learn to recognize and manage his emotions and improve his behavioral problems

    "Saber para poder ser": estudio sobre las barreras al aprendizaje de las personas con discapacidad intelectual en la vida adulta

    [ES] El presente estudio surge de la necesidad de conocer cuáles son las barreras al aprendizaje a las que se enfrentan las personas con discapacidad intelectual en su vida adulta, así como los elementos del contexto social que inciden en su desarrollo educativo en la adultez y las dificultades más comunes a las que tiene que hacer frente en esta etapa para, posteriormente, ofrecer una serie de propuestas y recomendaciones. Para ello, se realizan una serie de entrevistas semiestructuradas a personas adultas (mayores de 21 años) con discapacidad intelectual procedentes de entornos rurales o urbanos y que asistieron a Centros Ordinarios o de Educación Especializada. Además, estas entrevistas se realizaron a progenitores de personas adultas con discapacidad intelectual, un profesional de apoyo educativo que trabaja con estas personas en el ámbito no formal y un profesional dirigente de acciones educativas en una entidad de ámbito no formal. Esta investigación, que cuenta con la colaboración de la Fundación AVIVA de Salamanca, obtiene como resultados una falta clara de apoyos y oportunidades, agravados por las situaciones de discriminación a las que estas personas se enfrentan, que inciden de forma directa en la autonomía y el desarrollo de capacidades de las personas adultas con discapacidad intelectual. En el apartado de conclusiones, se observa una clara interrelación entre todas las barreras y elementos detectados, siendo necesaria una acción planificada y unida por parte de todos los agentes implicados en el desarrollo personal y social de estas personas.[EN] This study arises from the need to know what are the barriers faced by people with intellectual disabilities in their adult life, as well as the elements of the social context that affect their educational development in adulthood and the most common difficulties they have to face at this stage, in order to subsequently offer a series of proposals and recommendations. For this purpose, semi-structured interviews were made to adults (over 21 years old) with intellectual disabilities coming from rural or urban environments and who attended regular or specialized education centers. In addition, these interviews were made to parents of adults with intellectual disabilities, an educational support professional who works with these people in the non-formal setting and a professional in charge of educational actions in a non-formal setting. This research, which has the collaboration of the AVIVA Foundation of Salamanca, obtains as results a clear lack of support and opportunities, aggravated by the situations of discrimination that these people face, which have a direct impact on the autonomy and the development of capabilities of adults with intellectual disabilities. In the conclusions section, there is a clear interrelation between all the barriers and elements detected, being necessary a planned and united action by all the agents involved in the personal and social development of these people

    Strong optical nonlinearities in gallium and indium selenides related to inter-valence-band transitions induced by light pulses

    A nonlinear optical effect is shown to occur in gallium and indium selenides at photon energies of the order of 1.5 eV. It corresponds to transitions from a lower-energy valence band to the uppermost one when a nonequilibrium degenerate hole gas is created in the latter by a laser pulse. This inter-valence-band transition is allowed by crystal symmetry. Its oscillator strength is estimated through the f-sum rule and turns out to be about two orders of magnitude higher than that of the fundamental transition. The intensity of this effect is stronger when the pump pulse photon energy is close to that of the inter-valence-band transition; a condition that can be fulfilled only in indium selenide. The transient behavior of the sample transmittance is shown to be controlled by the balance between absorption and stimulated emission, which depends on the hole quasi-Fermi level and the gap renormalization due to Coulomb interaction in the electron-hole gas generated by the pump

    Development of a New Essential Oil-Based Technology to Maintain Fruit Quality in Tomato

    In this study, a new technology was tested for its efficacy in the conservation of tomato fruits. An initial experiment was conducted to determine the effects of eugenol on the main quality parameters of Raf tomato fruits; then, a main experiment was performed to test the effectiveness of the new technology. In both experiments, fruits of the tomato cultivar Raf at the mature green stage were used. The preliminary experiment demonstrated the effectiveness of eugenol in maintaining fruit quality during the postharvest life of the fruit. In the main experiment, the fruits were packed using a sachet filled with a mixture consisting of 10:1:1 clinoptilolite clay, ground clove buds, and activated charcoal. This mixture was evaluated against a commercial ethylene scavenger composed mainly of KMnO4-impregnated sepiolite. Three lots of fruits were used: One batch was considered as the control, where the fruits were not packed but kept in an open box at room temperature. The fruits in the other two batches were packed in 2 L PET containers with lids at a rate of three fruits per container, and a sachet of ground cloves and a commercial scavenger was added inside each container in each batch. The containers were kept at room temperature, and the following main quality parameters were analyzed: ethylene production rate, firmness, color, content of soluble solids, and pigments. The results showed that ground clove buds led to a reduction in ethylene production which was associated with a delay in maturation and could be a good alternative for use in the active fruit packaging of horticultural products

    Structural and optical properties of Ta2O5:Eu3+: Mg2+ or Ca2+ phosphor prepared by molten salt method

Ta2O5:Eu3+: Mg2+ or Ca2+ phosphor materials were prepared by molten salt method using KCl as flux. The Xray diffraction (XRD) patterns illustrated that the well crystallized Ta2O5:Eu3+: Mg2+ or Ca2+ were formed in the presence of flux under reduced temperature (800 ºC) in contrast to conventional solid state method (1200-1500 ºC). Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images indicate the achievement of well dispersed particles (hexagonal tablet and rod-like structures). Meanwhile, the photo-luminescent studies demonstrated that Ta2O5 is an efficient host to sensitize europium red emissions.
