    GM 23. Creole goat performances and main constraints in Guadeloupe

    This global revision describes productive potential and of resistance to diseases of the bred Creole goat in the 15 last years in experimental conditions at INRA, Guadalupe. Data on reproductive performances of 1 904 kiddings; 145 individual lactations; regular animal performances upon 6 375 kids, were used to estimate the preweaning performances and of postweaning performances upon 1 097 kids. The genetic variation of the resistance of 13 sires to internal parasites was assessed by the mean postweaning performances of their 489 offsprings (both sex). Data were analyzed by different linear models. Fertility average was of 90 % (3 mating times in two years); with 2.1 kid/kidding. Its borning weight was 1.73 kg and the weaning weight of 7.8 kg. Significant effects of the age of kidding, childbirths type and sex on results. Nutritional levels affected yields of milk averaging 792 g/d. The infection by internal parasites were permanent with a prevalence of Haemonchus which is responsible of 80 % of mortality preweans. A significant genetic variability in favourable and unfavourable environments was shown for the 6 month old goats. On the other hand, a genetic resistance to the heartwater was clear. We conclude that Creole goat, a local tropical breed, has high productive capacities provided husbandry conditions are adequate. Thus there exists scope for improvement for the goat breeders. Different traits based on reproductive and maternal performances as well as resistance to internal parasitism will be included in the genetic improvement program of the guadeloupean Creole goat

    SA 06. Integrated control of Strongylosis of small ruminants in the humid tropics: a component of animal production system that required a pluridiciplinary approach

    Internal parasitosis, mainly due to nematodes is well known to induce important economic losses in small ruminant production in tropical areas. Strongyloses are the more frequent diseases and became one of the main constraints in small ruminant production in the Caribbean. Research works are generally conducted with a disciplinary approach in Latin America: veterinarians focus on parasitology whereas animal production scientists focus on breeding systems. However, there are now sufficient data that emphasized the need for a global approach to set up efficient plans of integrated control for animal production in sustainable systems. This paper reviews the main research results obtained in the F.W.I. on these parasitizes and describes the pluridiciplinary research that is developed locally in the Animal Production Research Unit (APRU) to improved small ruminant grazing systems taking into account the inevitable gastrointestinal (GI) nematodes, as a component of the production systems

    Novel Ferromagnetic Atom Waveguide with in situ loading

    Magneto-optic and magnetostatic trapping is realized near a surface using current carrying coils wrapped around magnetizable cores. A cloud of 10^7 Cesium atoms is created with currents less than 50 mA. Ramping up the current while maintaining optical dissipation leads to tightly confined atom clouds with an aspect ratio of 1:1000. We study the 3D character of the magnetic potential and characterize atom number and density as a function of the applied current. The field gradient in the transverse dimension has been varied from < 10 G/cm to > 1 kG/cm. By loading and cooling atoms in-situ, we have eliminated the problem of coupling from a MOT into a smaller phase space.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    A Storage Ring for Neutral Atoms

    We have demonstrated a storage ring for ultra-cold neutral atoms. Atoms with mean velocities of 1 m/s corresponding to kinetic energies of ~100 neV are confined to a 2 cm diameter ring by magnetic forces produced by two current-carrying wires. Up to 10^6 atoms are loaded at a time in the ring, and 7 revolutions are clearly observed. Additionally, we have demonstrated multiple loading of the ring and deterministic manipulation of the longitudinal velocity distribution of the atoms using applied laser pulses. Applications of this ring include large area atom interferometers and cw monochromatic atomic beam generation.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Predicting the Location of Glioma Recurrence After a Resection Surgery

    International audienceWe propose a method for estimating the location of glioma recurrence after surgical resection. This method consists of a pipeline including the registration of images at different time points, the estimation of the tumor infiltration map, and the prediction of tumor regrowth using a reaction-diffusion model. A data set acquired on a patient with a low-grade glioma and post surgery MRIs is considered to evaluate the accuracy of the estimated recurrence locations found using our method. We observed good agreement in tumor volume prediction and qualitative matching in regrowth locations. Therefore, the proposed method seems adequate for modeling low-grade glioma recurrence. This tool could help clinicians anticipate tumor regrowth and better characterize the radiologically non-visible infiltrative extent of the tumor. Such information could pave the way for model-based personalization of treatment planning in a near future

    Implementation of herd health program to improve survival of Boer goats in Malaysia.

    A Boer goat breeding farm with 800 heads of breeder females, 50 breeder males, and 400 growing goats of various ages in Sabah, Malaysia was selected to study the effect of implementing herd health program. This included vaccination program against pneumonic mannheimiosis; fecal monitoring for helminthiasis, coccidiosis, and colibacillosis; and introduction of modified feeding regime comprised of day-time grazing and feeding of cut grass and supplemented feed. The herd health program was implemented in September 2007 and the impact was observed on body weight gains, body scoring, and annual mortality among adults and kids. It was found that implementation of herd health program significantly (p<0. 05) increased the average body weight gains in both adults and kids from 1. 8 g per kid and 0. 6 g per adult in 2006 to 3. 7 g per kid and 2. 2 g per adult in 2008. The percentage of adults with body scoring of <3 was significantly (p<0. 05) reduced from 82. 3% in 2006 to 77. 6% in 2007 and 4% in 2008. Similarly, the annual mortality rate was significantly (p<0. 05) reduced from 6. 5% among kids and 58. 2% among adults in 2006 to 12. 1% among kids and 10. 4% among adults in 2007, and to 9. 1% among kids and 1. 1% among adults in 2008. Therefore, it was concluded that implementation of herd health program significantly improved the survival and performance of goats

    Chemotherapy and diffuse low-grade gliomas: a survey within the European Low-Grade Glioma Network.

    Diffuse low-grade gliomas (DLGGs) are rare and incurable tumors. Whereas maximal safe, functional-based surgical resection is the first-line treatment, the timing and choice of further treatments (chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or combined treatments) remain controversial. An online survey on the management of DLGG patients was sent to 28 expert centers from the European Low-Grade Glioma Network (ELGGN) in May 2015. It contained 40 specific questions addressing the modalities of use of chemotherapy in these patients. The survey demonstrated a significant heterogeneity in practice regarding the initial management of DLGG patients and the use of chemotherapy. Interestingly, radiation therapy combined with the procarbazine, CCNU (lomustine), and vincristine regimen has not imposed itself as the gold-standard treatment after surgery, despite the results of the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group 9802 study. Temozolomide is largely used as first-line treatment after surgical resection for high-risk DLGG patients, or at progression. The heterogeneity in the management of patients with DLGG demonstrates that many questions regarding the postoperative strategy and the use of chemotherapy remain unanswered. Our survey reveals a high recruitment potential within the ELGGN for retrospective or prospective studies to generate new data regarding these issues

    THE AFTERCARE SURVEY:Assessment and intervention practices after brain tumour surgery in Europe

    Introduction People with gliomas need specialized neurosurgical, neuro-oncological, psycho-oncological, and neuropsychological care. The role of language and cognitive recovery and rehabilitation in patients’ well-being and resumption of work is crucial, but there are no clear guidelines for the ideal timing and character of assessments and interventions. The goal of the present work was to describe representative (neuro)psychological practices implemented after brain surgery in Europe. Methods An online survey was addressed to professionals working with individuals after brain surgery. We inquired about the assessments and interventions and the involvement of caregivers. Additionally, we asked about recommendations for an ideal assessment and intervention plan. Results Thirty-eight European centres completed the survey. Thirty of them offered at least one post-surgical (neuro)psychological assessment, mainly for language and cognition, especially during the early recovery stage and at long-term. Twenty-eight of the participating centres offered post-surgical therapies. Patients who stand the highest chances of being included in evaluation and therapy post-surgically are those who underwent awake brain surgery, harboured a low-grade glioma, or showed poor recovery. Nearly half of the respondents offer support programs to caregivers, and all teams recommend them. Treatments differed between these offered to individuals with low-grade glioma versus those with high-grade glioma. The figure of caregiver is not yet fully recognized in the recovery phase. Conclusion We stress the need for more complete rehabilitation plans, including the emotional and health-related aspects of recovery. In respondents´ opinions, assessment and rehabilitation plans should also be individually tailored and goal-directed (e.g., professional reinsertion)
