Exergaming is the activity in which this kind of videogame relies on the technology from thebody’s movement or reaction. However, some commercial devices that provides theseengaging activities, such as XBOX Kinect and Nintendo Wii Fit, are quite expensive andconsidered luxury for many. What we propose here that is by using a typical mobile phone asthe censor/controller and combined it with a display device such as a smart TV or a laptop.By using accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer on a typical mobile phone we canbuild a prototype of a game that attached on players’ body and have it mirrored on a SmartTV.The researcher was able to construct a proof of concept prototype of the app. First, the userwill control a skateboard on smart TV or other wireless projection where it will receivemirror feeds from the smartphone. The smartphone itself was placed on the player hips orinside his or her pocket. To control the skateboard, user must make a small jump to make itjump or face side to side to make the skateboard change direction to avoid obstacles. Whilethe app is still a prototype, yet it was able to show how a game can use a projected-basedinterface and mixed it the use of gyroscope and accelerometer censors. Futurerecommendation would be integrating it with calories counters for it to be fully“exergaming”

The current study investigates state and local polices that regulate academic writing and how they are appropriated in an English-as-a-Foreign-Language (EFL) teacher education program in Indonesia. The significance of the current study lies in its affirmation to the notion that policy appropriations are multi-layered. That is, government policies may or may not be translated into local de jure and de facto regulations, and in turn these local policies evolve as they are used and negotiated among colleagues and/or with students. In an attempt to understand the layers of appropriations, interviews with four local instructors were conducted. This research will pave the way for further praxes to provide quality academic-writing instructions, in the light of, or regardless of, the state regulations

CREATIVELY NEGOTIATING THE PLACE OF SPIRITUALITY IN THE ELT CURRICULUM

    Get PDF
This article aims to better understand constraints (e.g., hostility toward spirituality) and opportunities that may affect teacher-student and student-student relations as spiritually informed ELT curriculum is negotiated. Viewed more broadly, spirituality aims to foster the ability to see one’s own religious positioning in relation to other people who have different faiths, and the commitment to being connected with other people, as well as nature, with love. In terms of pedagogical methodology, negotiating the place of spirituality in ELT means creatively keeping the balance of mainstreaming and decentering different senses of spirituality. It is in line with Kumaravadivelu’s theoretical lens of postmethod pedagogy which sheds light on how a teacher theorized negotiating power relations associated with his spirituality; how a teacher exploited a religious issue unique to a specific context in Indonesia; and how the dialogue of religious issues can be extended beyond what already happened in class. Regarding spiritually informed materials development, this article focuses on teacher-student co-development of spiritually informed materials and adaptations of non-ELT materials. The article concludes with some pedagogical implications and major questions to be addressed in future research on spiritually informed ELT curriculum.Â

THEMATIC INVESTIGATIONS WITH INDONESIAN EFL PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS: FROM DESCRIPTIONS TO SOCIAL CRITIQUES AND BEYOND

    Get PDF
This paper aims at illuminating EFL educators with the application of “thematic investigation” as endorsed by a Critical Pedagogy exponent, Paulo Freire. The investigation involved 14 EFL pre-service (student) teachers and me as a teacher-researcher. In the investigation, four pictures (a McDonald’s advertisement, a beauty pageant, a crowded city, and a beggar in front of a temple) became the media for these teachers to make sense of realities. Using English as the medium of expression, these teachers suggested nuanced interpretations of the pictures. In view of various senses of “critical”, the student teachers’ interpretations represented various “breadths” and “depths” (i.e., the scope) of criticality. Knowing the scope of criticality is essential in being more aware of limits that restrict one’s views. The analyses on the generated themes will become the bases for further reflections to transcend the restrictions of one’s own perspectives. Keywords: Critical thinking; social critiques; thematic “limit-situation(s)”; problematizing practices.
