    Water use efficiency and maximizing profitability of grain sorghum production in the Texas Panhandle

    The reduction in the availability of irrigation water and the increase in pumping costs resulting from the decline in the Ogallala Aquifer make good management decisions more critical for the survival of the farm firm and the success of the agricultural sector in the Texas Panhandle. Response functions for irrigation and percentage potential evapotranspiration (PET) in the production of grain sorghum are estimated. The response functions are transferred into value product functions and combined with an irrigation energy cost function to determine the profit maximizing irrigation strategy. Three management decision variables; total water available, the level of irrigation and the water to meet crop ET requirements are evaluated. Grain sorghum yield, natural precipitation, irrigation, soil moisture content, potential evapotranspiration, and percent potential evapotranspiration (PET) data, collected over the period from 1998 through 2007 by commercial producers participating in the AgriPartners program are used to estimate the response functions. Cette Ă©tude visait Ă  Ă©valuer la satisfaction des usagers du service des urgences au Centre Hospitalier Universitaire le Luxembourg de Bamako, Mali, en 2019 en vue d’amĂ©liorer la qualitĂ© de la prise en charge. MĂ©thodes : Il s’agissait d’une Ă©tude descriptive, transversaleayant ciblĂ© les patients ou accompagnants en consultation ouhospitalisĂ© dans ledit service. La collecte des donnĂ©es, rĂ©alisĂ©e du 02 mai au 23 aoĂ»t 2019, a utilisĂ© un questionnaire administrĂ© auxusagers dans le service ou Ă  la sortie, en mode face Ă  face, aprĂšs leur consentement Ă©clairĂ©. RĂ©sultats : Sur les 138 usagers enquĂȘtĂ©s, 68,84 Ă©tait de sexe fĂ©minin, 73,19% avait plus de 50 ans, 96,38% scolarisĂ©s et 35,51% Ă©taient des mĂ©nagĂšres. Ils Ă©taient satisfaits Ă  72,97% des prestations reçues.Le principal motif de satisfaction Ă©tait la rapiditĂ© de la prise en charge(p=0,037). Chez les non satisfaits (27,03%), les motifs incriminĂ©s Ă©taient le long temps d’attente (63,37%), la non disponibilitĂ© des mĂ©dicaments (30,43%), le coĂ»t Ă©levĂ© des prestations (28,99%) et l’exiguĂŻtĂ© des locaux (26,21%).  Conclusion : MalgrĂ© certaines insuffisances du service des urgences du CHU le Luxembourg, le bon accueil et la prise en charge rapide sont les Ă©lĂ©ments clĂ©s associĂ©s Ă  la satisfaction du patient.   Introduction:The evaluation of user satisfaction is an essential element of the quality of care and delivery of a hospital. Methods:This was a descriptive, cross-sectional study that targeted patients or caregivers in consultation or hospitalized in the said service. Data collection, carried out from May 2 to August 23, 2019, used a questionnaire administered to users in the service or at the exit, in face-to-face mode, after their informed consent. Results:Of the 138 users surveyed, 68.84 were female, 73.19% were over 50 years old, 96.38% were educated and 35.51% were housewives. They were 72.97% satisfied with the services received. The main reason for satisfaction was the speed of treatment (p=0.037). Among those not satisfied (27.03%), the reasons incriminated were the long waiting time (63.37%), the unavailability of drugs (30.43%), the high cost of services (28.99%) and the small size of the premises (26.21%). Conclusion:Despite certain shortcomings of the emergency department of the CHU Luxembourg, good reception and rapid treatment are the key elements associated with patient satisfaction

    Export papaya post-harvest protection by fungicides and the problems of the maximal limit of residues

    The post-harvest maturity of papaya fruits is influenced by several environmental factors including temperature, light and ventilation of the surrounding wall. The maturity, presence and attacks or rots, and the accumulation of fungicide residues in the papaya was evaluated on papaya fruits treated with different fungicide. Thiabendazole-treated fruits did not rot 21 days after treatment and this fungicide was the most satisfactory with detected residues lower than the European Union's 2000/48/EC guideline.     ContrĂŽle des pesticides organochlorĂ©s dans le lait et produits laitiers : Bioaccumulation et risques d’exposition

    La prĂ©sente Ă©tude vise Ă  dĂ©terminer les teneurs des pesticides organochlorĂ©s (POC) dans le lait de vache et du beurre Ă©laborĂ© traditionnellement. Ainsi, 90 Ă©chantillons de lait et 45 Ă©chantillons de beurre ont Ă©tĂ© collectĂ©s auprĂšs des Ă©leveurs installĂ©s dans les rĂ©gionsde Buyo, Grand-lahou et Yamoussoukro. Ces Ă©chantillons ont Ă©tĂ© traitĂ©s en vue de dĂ©terminer les rĂ©sidus de 14 POC. Les analyses ont Ă©tĂ© menĂ©es par chromatographie en phase gazeuse sur colonne capillaire avec un dĂ©tecteur Ă  capture d'Ă©lectrons (ECD). Les rĂ©sultats observĂ©s rĂ©vĂšlent une contamination gĂ©nĂ©rale du lait et du beurre par les POC.Ainsi, des charges moyennes en hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) de 42,75 mg/kg et 165,94 mg/kg), en endosulfane de 31,58 et 436,80 mg/kg, en heptachlore 8,70 et 59,91 mg/kg et en Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) 36,20 et 227,82 mg/kg, ont Ă©tĂ© respectivement dĂ©terminĂ©es dans le lait et dans le beurre. La teneur rĂ©siduelle moyenne des isomĂšres HCH et des cyclodiĂšnes (dieldrine, endosulfane et heptachlore) constitue respectivement 36,9 % et 13,2 % de la moyenne du total des POC mesurĂ©s dans le lait et respectivement 40,7 % et 28,2 % de celle mesurĂ©e dans le beurre. Le prĂ©sent article vise Ă  Ă©valuer l’efficacitĂ© du management Ă  travers la planification, l’organisation des ressources, la direction, le contrĂŽle de la qualitĂ©. MĂ©thodologie : Il s’agissait d’une Ă©tude transversale, descriptive. Les techniques de collecte de donnĂ©es ont Ă©tĂ© l’entretien individuel, l’observation et l’exploitation documentaire. RĂ©sultats : Les fonctions Ă©valuĂ©es du Management ont Ă©tĂ© jugĂ©e satisfaisante avec 94% pour la planification, l’organisation des ressources (81%), la direction (88%), le contrĂŽle (82%). Ces diffĂ©rentes composantes ont permis d’apprĂ©cier l’efficacitĂ© du Management Ă  l’hĂŽpital de SĂ©gou, qui avec un score de 86,25% a Ă©tĂ© jugĂ© efficace selon nos critĂšres. Methodology: This was a cross-sectional, descriptive study. Data collection techniques included individual interviews, observation and documentary analysis. Results: The management functions assessed were judged to be satisfactory, with 94% for planning, organisation of resources (81%), direction (88%) and control (82%). These different components made it possible to assess the effectiveness of management at SĂ©gou Hospital, which, with a score of 86.25%, was judged to be effective according to our criteria. However, a number of shortcomings were noted, including the absence of a formal commitment, a quality policy document, a formal mechanism for listening to customers, the poor functioning of consultative bodies, and long queues at the admissions office.  Conclusion: In view of the shortcomings identified, and with a view to sustaining the gains made, it was suggested that the number of staff should be increased, a quality policy should be developed, waiting times should be reduced, mechanisms for listening to customers should be introduced, and quality control measures at SĂ©gou Hospital should be strengthened

    Plantes mĂ©dicinales de l’Afrique de l’Ouest pour la prise en charge des affections respiratoires pouvant se manifester au cours de la Covid-19

    Dans le cadre de contribuer Ă  la prise en charge symptomatique des affections respiratoires pouvant se manifester pendant la Covid-19, la prĂ©sente Ă©tude a Ă©tĂ© entreprise pour recenser les plantes mĂ©dicinales Africaines actives contre ces manifestations. Une Ă©tude bibliographique a Ă©tĂ© effectuĂ©e pour recenser les espĂšces vĂ©gĂ©tales utilisĂ©es dans la prise en charge des maladies respiratoires en Afrique de l’Ouest. La frĂ©quence de citation et un score de convergence d’usage des espĂšces ont Ă©tĂ© Ă©galement calculĂ©s. Un total de 318 recettes issues de 145 espĂšces vĂ©gĂ©tales a Ă©tĂ© inventoriĂ© Ă  travers diffĂ©rentes publications. Guiera senegalensis, Sterculia setigera, Bridelia ferruginea, Euphorbia hirta et Terminalia avicennioides Ă©taient les plantes les plus citĂ©es avec les meilleurs scores de convergence d’usage. Les feuilles de ces espĂšces Ă©taient les plus citĂ©es tandis que la toux Ă©tait la plus indiquĂ©e. English Title: Medicinal plants from West Africa for the management of respiratory diseases that may appear during the Covid-19 As part of contributing to the symptomatic management of respiratory conditions that may manifest during Covid-19, the current study was undertaken to identify African medicinal plants active against these manifestations. A bibliographic study was carried out to identify the plant species used in the management of respiratory diseases in West Africa. The frequency of citation and a convergence score for the use of the species were also calculated. A total of 318 recipes from 145 plant species were inventoried through various publications. Guiera senegalensis, Sterculia setigera, Bridelia ferruginea, Euphorbia hirta and Terminalia avicennioides were the most cited plants with the best usage convergence scores. Leaves from these species were most cited while the cough was more indicated. The results of this study could serve as a database of plant species used in the management of respiratory tract diseases in West Africa.Keywords: Medicinal plants, Respiratory Affections, Covid-19, West Africa

    Etude cinĂ©tique de la dĂ©gradation de l’Endosufane en solution

    Les pesticides sont frĂ©quemment utilisĂ©s en CĂŽte d’Ivoire. Leur dĂ©tection dans les eaux de forage tĂ©moigne de leur mauvais usage et d’un grave problĂšme agroenvironnemental. La photolyse directe ou la photocatalyse sont de nouvelles techniques d’oxydation, envisageables pour rĂ©soudre ce problĂšme, avec l’avantage d’utiliser Ă  terme les UV-A solaires. L’ a-endosulfane et le b-endosulfane ont Ă©tĂ© sĂ©lectionnĂ©s pour cette Ă©tude. Leurs dĂ©gradations dans l’eau de forage et dans l’eau dĂ©ionisĂ©e ont Ă©tĂ© respectivement effectuĂ©es dans un rĂ©acteur muni d’une lampe basse pression de 6 watts ou par exposition Ă  la lumiĂšre solaire. La photodĂ©gradation dans l’eau de forage est plus rapide que celle observĂ©e dans l’eau dĂ©ionisĂ©e. On observe cependant une stabilitĂ© relative des isomĂšres d’endosulfane sous irradiation solaire avec des temps de demi-vie de 770 h pour a endosulfane et 407 h pour b endosulfane. L’utilisation du photocatalyseur (Fe3+/H2O2) a accĂ©lĂ©rĂ© la dĂ©gradation de l’endosulfane quelque soit la source d’irradiation. Sous irradiation solaire, les temps de demi-vie passent Ă  56,34 minutes et Ă  41,74 minutes respectivement pour l’a et le b endosulfane
