Cal Poly Student Recreation Center Fire Protection Review

    Get PDF
This report summarizes the analysis of the existing fire protection features and systems installed in the Recreation Center building on the Cal Poly campus. The analysis is conducted into two different approaches. A prescriptive analysis approach will examine installed fire protection features and systems in accordance with the International Building Code. The analysis will consider the building as existing building as per IBC provisions. A performance-based approach will assess whether the building occupants will egress the building before conditions become untenable. Fire dynamic simulations will be used to determine the available safe egress time and evacuation simulations will performed to estimate the required safe egress time. Two fire scenarios were analyzed to assess tenability conditions. The first fire scenario assuming a stage fire during a fully-packed-gymnasium concert has revealed that conditions become quickly untenable for second floor bleachers top seat occupants. The same conclusion was reached for the assessment of the second fire scenario assuming fire under bleachers on the second floor. The following recommendations were put forward to enhance safety of personnel and users of the Rec Center: 1) Training of personnel in enforcement of life safety management procedures and regular fire safety awareness campaigns were suggested as important tools to improve safety factor between ASET and RSET. 2) Re-assessment of installed sprinkler system in the gymnasium as existing system was designed for light hazard occupancy while the bleachers flammability study revealed that the gymnasium should be classified as extra ordinary hazard occupancy. Performance-based analysis of postulated fire scenarios is encouraged in order to formulate comprehensive improvement life safety measures for the Rec Center

Polycyclic benzimidazole derivatives, an important class of compounds in organic electronics and photovoltaics, were prepared using a solvent-free green process based on heating carboxylic acid anhydrides and arylene diamines in the presence of zinc acetate in the solid state. Products were isolated and purified directly by train sublimation of the crude reaction mixtures. The reaction conditions were optimized using various carboxylic acid anhydrides. Optical and electrochemical properties of these materials are also described

Detection of Non-uniformity in Parameters for Magnetic Domain Pattern Generation by Machine Learning

We estimate the spatial distribution of heterogeneous physical parameters involved in the formation of magnetic domain patterns of polycrystalline thin films by using convolutional neural networks. We propose a method to obtain a spatial map of physical parameters by estimating the parameters from patterns within a small subregion window of the full magnetic domain and subsequently shifting this window. To enhance the accuracy of parameter estimation in such subregions, we employ large-scale models utilized for natural image classification and exploit the benefits of pretraining. Using a model with high estimation accuracy on these subregions, we conduct inference on simulation data featuring spatially varying parameters and demonstrate the capability to detect such parameter variations.Comment: 32 pages, 14 figure

Dua puluh ekor tikus putih dibagi menjadi 4 kelompok perlakuan yaitu kelompok 1 kontrol sehat, kelompok 2 NaCMC 1%, kelompok 3 ekstrak etanol kayu secang 400 mg/kg BB, dan kelompok 4 ekstrak etanol kayu secang 1000 mg/kg BB.

This study was carried out to determine the active antioxidant fraction of Garcinia hombroniana bark extract by the DPPH and ABTS method. Along with this, the study also attempts to identify the class of compounds present in the various extract of G. hombroniana by the active fraction. The bark extract of G. hombroniana was prepared by the multilevel maceration method by using three solvents including n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and 96% ethanol. Results of study suggested that n-hexane (HSE), ethyl acetate (EASE) and ethanol 96% extract (ESE) have antioxidant activity with IC50 value of 423 ± 16.72 μg/mL, 284.89 ± 2.7μg/mL, and 10.49 ± 0.19 μg/mL in DPPH assay, while these extracts showed IC50 value of 560.92 ± 48.86 μg/mL, 430.18 ± 16.65 μg/mL, and 13.92 ± 0.57 μg/mL respectively in ABTS assay. Further, fractionated using vacuum column chromatography revealed the presence of five fractions viz., A, B, C, D, and E. Among these, fractions D showed the highest antioxidant activity with an IC50 value of 4.83 ± 0.18 μg/mL and 6.82 ± 0.31 μg/mL in DPPH and ABTS assays. Results of the fractioned analysis and qualitative determination showed that the active fraction of G. hombroniana contained flavonoid, triterpenoid, alkaloid, and saponin compounds, and antioxidant activities of these extracts might be due to the presence of these active ingredients

Identification and functional characterization of uric acid transporter Urat1 (Slc22a12) in rats

AbstractUric acid transporter URAT1 contributes significantly to reabsorption of uric acid in humans to maintain a constant serum uric acid (SUA) level. Since alteration of SUA level is associated with various diseases, it is important to clarify the mechanism of change in SUA. However, although expression of mRNA of an ortholog of URAT1 (rUrat1) in rats has been reported, functional analysis and localization have not been done. Therefore, rat rUrat1 was functionally analyzed using gene expression systems and isolated brush-border membrane vesicles (BBMVs) prepared from rat kidney, and its localization in kidney was examined immunohistochemically. Uric acid transport by rUrat1 was chloride (Cl−) susceptible with a Km of 1773μM. It was inhibited by benzbromarone and trans-stimulated by lactate and pyrazinecarboxylic acid (PZA). Cl− gradient-susceptible uric acid transport by BBMVs showed similar characteristics to those of uric acid transport by rUrat1. Moreover, rUrat1 was localized at the apical membrane in proximal tubular epithelial cells in rat kidney. Accordingly, rUrat1 is considered to be involved in uric acid reabsorption in rats in the same manner as URAT1 in humans. Therefore, rUrat1 may be a useful model to study issues related to the role of human URAT1
