    What ever happened to summer?

    Did you ever have a summer that felt like summer? For me, it was when I was a full-time faculty. I enjoyed the nine-month teaching contract and the three months of downtime, yet I was eager to return to campus and my students. As I transitioned from teaching to administration, my summer “downtime” became the summer crunch time. People ask, “How is your summer going?” knowing that I work for a college. My response is usually, “What summer?” I am sure those of you who work in administrative positions have had similar experiences, and often ask the question “What ever happened to summer?” As administrators we tend to feel obligated to always be present, or if not present, very available through electronic or other forms of communication. Michael Bugeja (2006) discussed the issue of addiction related to electronic communication in his article “Stalked by E-mail on Vacation,” comparing the electronic connections to the use of narcotics. I know my logic in constantly checking emails is so that I do not have an unmanageable amount of communication to address when I return. Could the real reason for my obsessive email habit be an addiction

    Employment Success of Community and Technical College Program Graduates as an Indicator of Economic Development in West Virginia

    The purpose of this study was to analyze existing wage data to quantify the employment success of community and technical college graduates by program as an indicator of economic development in West Virginia. Data for the variables were obtained from archival databases and a cooperative agreement between state agencies. Descriptive statistics were utilized to examine employment rates, range of earnings, and employment in-industry of community and technical college graduates from 23 programs from 1997 to 2002. Graduates in the health fields demonstrated both the highest and lowest ratios of employment, with the mean employment rate for all programs of 68.12 percent. The average annual wage of all programs was 24,993.41,withsixofthesevenprogramsinthehealthprofessionsreportingearningsoverthemean.ElectricalEngineeringTechnologygraduatesalsoreportedhighrange,24,993.41, with six of the seven programs in the health professions reporting earnings over the mean. Electrical Engineering Technology graduates also reported high range, 123,155.91, and mean, $40,432.46, earnings. The highest percentages of graduates working in-industry were in the Health Professions and Related Clinical Sciences area. The research thus indicates a higher level of economic development, or earnings, from graduates in the Health Professions and Related Clinical Sciences and Engineering Technology areas

    changed many aspects of our lives this year. Things we’ve taken for granted in the past are now different, and we’re being forced to become comfortable with ways of doing things that are unfamiliar, and often initially uncomfortable. Last week, I had an issue with my Verizon bill and had to call customer service. I understood that because of COVID-19, customer service representatives were working from home, and wait times would be considerably longer. The wait was long. It was almost an hour long, whereas in the past connecting to a representative might have taken 10 minutes. I felt impatient; past the half hour mark, I even felt a bit agitated. But then she answered—a human being on the other end of the line, apologetic and ready to help. My issue was resolved quickly and professionally, and not for a moment could I behave in a way that was impatient, upset, or worse yet, unkind, to this person who was doing her best in a circumstance she couldn’t control. It is critical that we recognize and appropriately respond to circumstances that are beyond anyone’s control. This encounter reminded me of the importance of teaching and practicing tolerance. Teaching tolerance is something I try to do in the college classroom, and exercising tolerance is something I’ve found to be a necessity when dealing with students with diverse needs

    Introducing Allergenic Food into Infants\u27 Diets: Systematic Review

    Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review was to explore the association between timing of introduction of potentially allergenic foods to infants and development of food allergies. Methods: CINAHL, Medline, PubMed, Science Direct, and Web of Science were searched using the terms solid food, complementary food, or infant feeding combined with allergy or hypersensitivity for articles published in English in 2000 or later. Inclusion criteria were 1) primary research articles with 2) a focus on association between introduction of complementary foods including potentially allergenic foods into diets of infants less than 12 months of age and development of food allergies. Articles were excluded if they were 1) not primary research, 2) about complementary foods only (without specifi city of allergenic foods), or 3) on allergic conditions other than food allergy (such as asthma or eczema). Results: The initial literature search yielded 533 articles; 14 articles met inclusion criteria. Level of evidence of each study was determined with the SORT criteria. Results found that delayed introduction of solid foods in general and allergenic foods in particular was not associated with decreased risk for allergic diseases among high and low-risk infants. Later introduction was associated with increased risk for allergy development. Clinical Implications: For infants at low risk for development of food allergies, providers should advise caregivers to introduce potentially allergenic foods with other solid foods between 4 and 6 months of age when children show an interest in eating solids. Infants at high risk for peanut allergy, should be evaluated by an allergy specialist prior to introduction of peanuts and work with providers to create an individualized plan for introduction of peanuts and other allergenic foods as needed

    Novel methods to estimate antiretroviral adherence: protocol for a longitudinal study.

    BackgroundThere is currently no gold standard for assessing antiretroviral (ARV) adherence, so researchers often resort to the most feasible and cost-effective methods possible (eg, self-report), which may be biased or inaccurate. The goal of our study was to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of innovative and remote methods to estimate ARV adherence, which can potentially be conducted with less time and financial resources in a wide range of clinic and research settings. Here, we describe the research protocol for studying these novel methods and some lessons learned.MethodsThe 6-month pilot study aimed to examine the feasibility and acceptability of a remotely conducted study to evaluate the correlation between: 1) text-messaged photographs of pharmacy refill dates for refill-based adherence; 2) text-messaged photographs of pills for pill count-based adherence; and 3) home-collected hair sample measures of ARV concentration for pharmacologic-based adherence. Participants were sent monthly automated text messages to collect refill dates and pill counts that were taken and sent via mobile telephone photographs, and hair collection kits every 2 months by mail. At the study end, feasibility was calculated by specific metrics, such as the receipt of hair samples and responses to text messages. Participants completed a quantitative survey and qualitative exit interviews to examine the acceptability of these adherence evaluation methods. The relationship between the 3 novel metrics of adherence and self-reported adherence will be assessed.DiscussionInvestigators conducting adherence research are often limited to using either self-reported adherence, which is subjective, biased, and often overestimated, or other more complex methods. Here, we describe the protocol for evaluating the feasibility and acceptability of 3 novel and remote methods of estimating adherence, with the aim of evaluating the relationships between them. Additionally, we note the lessons learned from the protocol implementation to date. We expect that these novel measures will be feasible and acceptable. The implications of this research will be the identification and evaluation of innovative and accurate metrics of ARV adherence for future implementation

    The Cognitive Effects of Machine Learning Aid in Domain-Specific and Domain-General Tasks

    With machine learning (ML) technologies rapidly expanding to new applications and domains, users are collaborating with artificial intelligence-assisted diagnostic tools to a larger and larger extent. But what impact does ML aid have on cognitive performance, especially when the ML output is not always accurate? Here, we examined the cognitive effects of the presence of simulated ML assistance—including both accurate and inaccurate output—on two tasks (a domain-specific nuclear safeguards task and domain-general visual search task). Patterns of performance varied across the two tasks for both the presence of ML aid as well as the category of ML feedback (e.g., false alarm). These results indicate that differences such as domain could influence users’ performance with ML aid, and suggest the need to test the effects of ML output (and associated errors) in the specific context of use, especially when the stimuli of interest are vague or ill-defined

    The Effects of Pre- and Post-Exercise Whey vs. Casein Protein Consumption on Body Composition and Performance Measures in Collegiate Female Athletes

    Two of the most popular forms of protein on the market are whey and casein. Both proteins are derived from milk however the two differ concerning their absorption in the body. This difference between whey and casein proteins could affect the response seen in conjunction with training. PURPOSE: To investigate the potential effects of two types of protein ingestion in conjunction with a controlled resistance training program utilizing college female basketball players. METHODS: 16 NCAA Division III female basketball players were matched according to weight and double-blind randomly assigned to consume 24 grams whey protein (WP) (N = 8, 20 ± 1.9 years, 158 ± 27.3 cm, 66 ± 4.9 kg, 27 ± 4.9 %BF) or 24 grams casein protein (CP) (N = 8, 21 ± 2.8 years, 153 ± 2.9 cm, 68 ± 2.9 kg, 25 ± 5.7 %BF) pre- and post-exercise for eight weeks. Subjects participated in a supervised 4-day per week undulating periodized training program. At 0, 4, and 8 weeks, subjects underwent DEXA body composition analysis. At 0 and 8 weeks subjects underwent 1RM strength, muscle endurance, vertical jump, 5-10-5 and broad jump testing sessions. Data analysis using repeated measures ANOVA are presented as mean ± SD changes from baseline after 60 days. RESULTS: No significant group x time interaction effects were observed among groups in changes in any variable (p \u3e 0.05). A significant time effect was observed for body fat (WP: -2 ± 1.1 %BF; CP: -1 ± 1.6 %BF, p \u3c 0.001), lean mass (WP: 1.5 ± 1 kg; CP: 1.4 ± 1 kg, p \u3c 0.001), fat mass (WP: -1.3 ± 1.2 kg; CP: -0.6 ± 1.4 kg, p \u3c 0.001), leg press 1RM (WP: 88.7 ± 43.9 kg; CP: 90 ± 48.5 kg, p \u3c 0.001), bench press 1RM (WP: 7.5 ± 4.6 kg; CP: 4.3 ±4.5 kg, p = 0.01), vertical jump (WP: 1.6 ± 0.74 in; CP: 1.4 ± 3 in, p \u3c 0.001), 5-10-5 (WP: -0.3 ± 0.2 sec; CP: -0.09 ± 0.42 sec, p \u3c 0.001), and broad jump (WP: 4.1 ± 2.6 in; CP: 5.1 ± 2.8 in, p \u3c 0.001). CONCLUSION: The combination of a controlled undulating resistance training program with pre- and post-exercise protein supplementation is capable of inducing significant changes in performance and body composition. There does not appear to be a difference in the performance enhancing effects of whey versus casein proteins

    A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Changes in Cognitive Functioning in Adults Undergoing Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation

    Evidence is mixed regarding the effects of hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) on changes in cognitive functioning among adults. Meta-analysis, which is designed to help reconcile conflicting findings, has not yet been conducted on studies of adults receiving HCT. To fill this gap, the current study provides a systematic review and meta-analysis of cognitive functioning in adults receiving HCT. A search of PubMed, PsycInfo, CINAHL, and Cochrane Library yielded 732 abstracts, which were independently evaluated by pairs of raters. Seventeen studies were systematically reviewed; eleven were retained for meta-analysis. There was agreement that cognitive impairments are evident for a subset of patients prior to HCT. Meta-analytic findings of 404 patients revealed no significant changes in cognitive functioning pre- to post-HCT (P values > .05). Age, time since transplant, and total body irradiation were not associated with changes in cognitive functioning. Patients who received autologous transplants were more likely to demonstrate improvements in attention (P = .004). The systematic review identified several limitations of existing literature, including small, clinically heterogeneous samples. Large, cooperative group studies are needed to address these design limitations. Nevertheless, results from the current meta-analysis suggest that cognitive functioning does not significantly change following HCT
