Adaptive fair channel allocation for QoS enhancement in IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs
The emerging widespread use of real-time multimedia applications over wireless networks makes the support of quality of service (QoS) a key problem. In this paper, we focus on QoS support mechanisms for IEEE 802.11 wireless ad-hoc networks. First, we review limitations of the upcoming IEEE 802.11e enhanced DCF (EDCF) and other enhanced MAC schemes that have been proposed to support QoS for 802.11 ad-hoc networks. Then, we describe a new scheme called adaptive fair EDCF that extends EDCF, by increasing the contention window during deferring periods when the channel is busy, and by using an adaptive fast backoff mechanism when the channel is idle. Our scheme computes an adaptive backoff threshold for each priority level by taking into account the channel load. The new scheme significantly improves the quality of multimedia applications. Moreover, it increases the overall throughput obtained both in medium and high load cases. Simulution results show that our new scheme outperforms EDCF and other enhanced schemes. Finally, we show that the adaptive fair EDCF scheme achieves a high degree of fairness among applications of the same priority level
PENANGGUNGJAWAB PENDIDIKAN
Stigma in youth with Tourette's syndrome: a systematic review and synthesis
Tourette's syndrome (TS) is a childhood onset neurodevelopmental disorder, characterised by tics. To our knowledge, no systematic reviews exist which focus on examining the body of literature on stigma in association with children and adolescents with TS. The aim of the article is to provide a review of the existing research on (1) social stigma in relation to children and adolescents with TS, (2) self-stigma and (3) courtesy stigma in family members of youth with TS. Three electronic databases were searched: PsycINFO, PubMed and Web of Science. Seventeen empirical studies met the inclusion criteria. In relation to social stigma in rating their own beliefs and behavioural intentions, youth who did not have TS showed an unfavourable attitude towards individuals with TS in comparison to typically developing peers. Meanwhile, in their own narratives about their lives, young people with TS themselves described some form of devaluation from others as a response to their disorder. Self-degrading comments were denoted in a number of studies in which the children pointed out stereotypical views that they had adopted about themselves. Finally, as regards courtesy stigma, parents expressed guilt in relation to their children's condition and social alienation as a result of the disorder. Surprisingly, however, there is not one study that focuses primarily on stigma in relation to TS and further studies that examine the subject from the perspective of both the 'stigmatiser' and the recipient of stigma are warranted
But, Whatever The Reason, His Heart or His Shoes, He Stood There on Christmas Eve, Hating the Whos : Dr. Seuss\u27 The Grinch as The Racialized Other in American Culture
This thesis analyzes Dr. Seuss’ the Grinch as a modern myth in US society that provides an imaginary resolution to the perceived encroachment of racial and cultural heterogeneity in the various time periods in which the text has circulated. Each chapter closely reads three different versions of the story, including Dr. Seuss’ children’s book published in 1957, the 1966 animated TV special directed by Chuck Jones, and the 2000 film directed by Ron Howard and starring Jim Carrey. In each chapter, I consider the racial politics prevalent in each time period in order to elucidate my claim that various media representations of the Grinch reveal American culture’s attitude towards the racialized Other. Ultimately, I argue that the Grinch functions to represent an imagined racialized Other who in each text must become acculturated in the end, thereby paralleling US cultural attitudes toward the “other” who must conform to US dominant culture

Understanding the Myddosome Complex: An Exploration of How Homotypic Death Domain Interfaces Contribute to Overall Structure.
The Myddosome is a large multimeric complex assembled through homotypic interactions between the Death Domains (DDs) of adjacent proteins. It acts as a scaffold bringing downstream signaling elements into proximity with each other. This allows for the subsequent activation of downstream transcription factors, such as IRFs (Interferon Regulatory Factors) and NFÎşB.
The crystal structure of the Myddosome was published by Lin et al [1], by combining the Death Domains of MyD88, IRAK4 and IRAK2. The complex was shown to form a left-handed helical tower as it assembles in a staggered hexagonal pattern, due to the three characteristic types of homotypic Death Domain (DD:DD) interactions seen in complexes of the Death Domain Superfamily.
The work discussed in this thesis aimed to expand upon our understanding of the Myddosome complex. An initial bioinformatic analysis was carried out to further investigate the different homotypic Death Domain interfaces responsible for Myddosome assembly. The physical and geometric properties of the complex were examined in detail to identify how they contribute towards the complex’s final structure. Additional computational work provides evolutionary context for the development of the Myddosome, while also drawing links to known non- communicable diseases.
A new type of homotypic Death Domain interface was potentially identified, while examining the interactions formed during Myddosome assembly in silico. It appears that this interface is exclusive to members of the IRAK family. Subsequent in vitro work was initiated to verify these observations and future research possibilities were discussed.
Points of further clarification were identified when examining the 3-dimensional Myddosome structure as published by Lin et al. Unit cell contacts caused by the presence of un-cleaved GST purification tags were found to be responsible for structural distortion seen in the crystallographic structure. Additionally, the MyD88 Intermediate Domain was not included in the structure of the Myddosome, despite studies characterising the MyD88 Intermediate Domain as vital for functional Myddosome assembly. Further in vitro biophysical analysis was proposed to both rectify the distortion and to further characterise the interactions involved in Myddosome assembly in the presence of the MyD88 Intermediate Domain
Knowledge Retrieval using Foon
Flexible task planning is still a significant challenge for robots. The
inability of robots to creatively adapt their task plans to new or unforeseen
challenges is largely attributable to their limited understanding of their
activities and the environment. Cooking, for example, requires a person to
occasionally take risks that a robot would find extremely dangerous. We may
obtain manipulation sequences by employing knowledge that is drawn from
numerous video sources thanks to knowledge retrieval through graph search.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1902.01537 by other
