Dichoptic difference thresholds for chromatic stimuli

We have investigated the properties of binocular color vision using a new measure: the Dichoptic Color Difference Threshold (DCDT). The DCDT is the smallest detectable difference in color between two dichoptically superimposed stimuli. DCDTs differ from conventional measures of binocular rivalry in that they are performance- not appearance-based. The dependency of DCDTs on (a) color direction and (b) color contrast was measured. The colors (chromaticities) of the stimuli were defined according to a scaled version of the MacLeod-Boynton color space, and the luminance and color contrasts of the stimulus pairs were equated using a matching procedure. DCDTs were measured using a forced-choice procedure in which subjects had to chose which of two stimuli had a between-eye-difference in color. DCDTs ranged from 9 degrees to 22 degrees of color angle depending on color direction. DCDTs were lower than binocular rivalry thresholds but higher than thresholds for discriminating the color pairs when placed side-by-side. There were no minima at either the cardinal color or unique hues directions, suggesting that DCDTs are not mediated by these mechanisms. DCDTs were however positively correlated with the measured perceived color difference between the color pairs when placed side-by-side

From PubMed via Jisc Publications RouterHistory: received 2018-10-23, accepted 2018-12-11Publication status: epublishMechanically ventilated patients often develop muscle weakness post-intensive care admission. Current evidence suggests that early mobilisation of these patients can be an effective intervention in improving their outcomes. However, what constitutes early mobilisation in mechanically ventilated patients (EM-MV) remains unclear. We aimed to systematically explore the definitions and activity types of EM-MV in the literature. Whittemore and Knafl's framework guided this review. CINAHL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, ASSIA, and Cochrane Library were searched to capture studies from 2000 to 2018, combined with hand search of grey literature and reference lists of included studies. The Critical Appraisal Skills Programme tools were used to assess the methodological quality of included studies. Data extraction and quality assessment of studies were performed independently by each reviewer before coming together in sub-groups for discussion and agreement. An inductive and data-driven thematic analysis was undertaken on verbatim extracts of EM-MV definitions and activities in included studies. Seventy-six studies were included from which four major themes were inferred: (1) , (2) , (3) and (4) . The first theme indicates that EM-MV is either not fully defined in studies or when a definition is provided this is not standardised across studies. The remaining themes reflect the diversity of EM-MV activities which depends on patients' characteristics and ICU settings; the negotiated decision-making process between patients and staff; and their interdependent relationship during the implementation. This review highlights the absence of an agreed definition and on what constitutes early mobilisation in mechanically ventilated patients. To advance research and practice an agreed and shared definition is a pre-requisite

AbstractThe study designed to investigate whether the quality of life and its four domains (physical health, psychological health, social relationships and environment) are significant predictors of subjective well-being and also to examine the quality of life in terms of gender, socio-economic level, the number of sibling, living environment, mother education level and father education level. The study was carried out with undergraduate students in German, French and English Language Teaching Departments and Primary Education Department. Subjective Well-Being Scale (Tuzgöl Dost, 2004) and WHOQOL-BREF that was adapted to Turkish by Eser, Fidaner, Fidaner, et al. (1999) were used to collect data. Data were analyzed by using t-test, One Way ANOVA and stepwise regression analysis. Results revealed that quality of life (overall) and psychological health, social relationships and environment domains of quality of life predicted subjective well-being positively whereas physical health domain did not predict subjective well-being. In addition to this, significant difference was found in quality of life scores in terms of socio-economic level

AbstractThe purpose of the study is to examine the relationships among big five personality traits, coping styles and subjective well- being in a selected Turkish sample that consisted of 251 undergraduate students obtained from Psychological Counseling and Guidance Department at Marmara University. Data were collected using Subjective Well-being Scale (Tuzgöl Dost, 2005), Coping Styles Scale (Hisli Şahin and Durak, 1995) and Big Five Personality Inventory Short Form- NEO-FFI (Gülgöz, 2002). To analyze the data, a hierarchical regression analysis was conducted to determine the relationships with personality traits, coping styles and subjective well-being. The results revealed that neuroticism was a negative predictor of subjective well-being whereas extraversion and conscientiousness were positive predictors of subjective well-being. In addition to this, self-confident coping style was found to predict subjective well-being positively while helpless coping style predicted subjective well-being negatively. These results suggest that personality traits and coping styles play significant role in explaining subjective well-being

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether differences in social support, submissive behaviors, and loneliness existed among Turkish university students who had had premarital sexual intercourse and those who had not. Using self-reported questionnaires, students who had experienced sexual intercourse were contrasted with those who had not. Data were gathered on 420 university students in Ankara, Turkey. MANOVA statistics were used in the data analysis. Results indicated that more than 75 % of the total respondents reported that they had never had sexual intercourse; the frequency of sexual intercourse was higher among males than females. It was found that students who had had sexual intercourse reported less perceived support from family. The two groups were not significantly different, however, in perceived support from friends, submissive behaviors and loneliness. Possible interpretations of these data and implications for future study are suggested. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC

Demirhan, A. Yasin (Dogus Author)In this study diversities of temporal electricity production of all the wind farms were examined. On the first 10 days of January, on January 4 between 00:00 and 06:00 a.m., maximum power ramps have taken place, and output power has increased by about 400 MW. This increase corresponds to 30 % of the total installed wind power capacity. When all installed wind farms’ output power frequency distribution is examined in the first 10 days of January, total hourly output of 33 wind farms varied less than 1 % (rate of output power variation to the total installed wind farm capacity) with 20 % probability, and maximum hourly output power variation has been 6 % of the total installed capacity. When the same analysis was performed for the Gökçedağ wind farm which has 135 MW installed power and also one of the biggest wind farms in Turkey, hourly output power variation has reached 20 % of total installed capacity. As can be seen from this study, installing all the wind farms in the same places causes serious problems such as the wind farms being out of service due to the fall and rise of the wind speeds. Therefore, while determining the locations of the wind farms, it is important to consider that wind farms back up the features of each other’s variable energy production for reaching stable grid operation conditions

In this study characteristic properties of Jerusalem thorn, Christ's thorn or Garland thorn honey (Paliurus spina-christi Mill.) were investigated that obtained from different locations of Marmara and Trakya regions of Turkey. Eighteen honey samples were collected from Bursa, Edirne and Kirklareli regions by experienced beekeepers in 2018. Melissopalynological analysis, physicochemical parameters, pH, moisture, color, conductivity and optical rotation values, chemical parameters, proline, sugar components, total phenolic, flavonoid, tannin amounts and phenolic profile analyzes were analyzed of the honey samples Antioxidant and antimicrobial activities were tested as biological activities. According to the results of the study, it was found that the honey has a highly monofloral properties ranged from 69.5% and 96%. Antimicrobial activity values of the honey were compared with standard antibiotics and two different Manuka honeys. It was found that the honeys were showed higher antimicrobial and antifungal activities against 10 different pathogenic than Manuka honeys. As a result, it is thought that Jerusalem thorn honey have high biological active potential as monofloral honey for apitherapy applications. Copyright © 2019 Business Lawyer.
