    Effect of significant data loss on identifying electric signals that precede rupture by detrended fluctuation analysis in natural time

    Electric field variations that appear before rupture have been recently studied by employing the detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) as a scaling method to quantify long-range temporal correlations. These studies revealed that seismic electric signals (SES) activities exhibit a scale invariant feature with an exponent αDFA≈1\alpha_{DFA} \approx 1 over all scales investigated (around five orders of magnitude). Here, we study what happens upon significant data loss, which is a question of primary practical importance, and show that the DFA applied to the natural time representation of the remaining data still reveals for SES activities an exponent close to 1.0, which markedly exceeds the exponent found in artificial (man-made) noises. This, in combination with natural time analysis, enables the identification of a SES activity with probability 75% even after a significant (70%) data loss. The probability increases to 90% or larger for 50% data loss.Comment: 12 Pages, 11 Figure

    Issue of gender is an issue that since the agreement had been made both in Indonesia andin other countries, in essence the issue of gender is an issue that demands for equal rightsbetween men and women, gender is a dominant aspect in politics, in relation class, age group orethnicity. Since 2002 the issue of increasing the number of women to become involved in thepolitical world has begun socialized until finally in the 2004 elections the representation ofwomen in politics has begun to be increased to 30% in Parliament until now.The methodology used in this study is a qualitative research methodology. In thisresearch, data collection techniques used were interviews with sources and literature that supportto this research. The location of research undertaken is at the secretariat office PDI P Cirebon,PDI-P faction Office of Cirebon, and at the homes of volunteers.In this study include two discussion is to see how the role of women in the managementand see how the legislative nomination process that took place whether or not gender responsive.Discussion on the role of women include the level of the role of women in the management cadreof the party, while the discussion on legislative nomination process includes female cadresnomination process flow from the bottom to the top.The conclusion of this study, the first formulation of the vision and mission of theIndonesian Democratic Party of Struggle in general very focused on women because there is nodifference between men and women, the second in response to the policy of affirmative DPPissued a decree mandating the nomination process must include 30% representation of women,this shows that the party is very responsive to the policy, the third in performing its role in worldpolitics cadre of women experience some psychological barriers such as barriers, culturalbarriers, and economic barriers

    Rescue of glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored protein biosynthesis using synthetic glycosylphosphatidylinositol oligosaccharides

    The attachment of proteins to the cell membrane using a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor is a ubiquitous process in eukaryotic cells. Deficiencies in the biosynthesis of GPIs and the concomitant production of GPI-anchored proteins lead to a series of rare and complicated disorders associated with inherited GPI deficiencies (IGDs) in humans. Currently, there is no treatment for patients suffering from IGDs. Here, we report the design, synthesis and use of GPI fragments to rescue the biosynthesis of GPI-anchored proteins caused by mutation in genes involved in the assembly of GPI-glycolipids in cells. We demonstrated that the synthetic fragments GlcNAc-PI (1), Man-GlcN-PI (5), and GlcN-PI with two (3) and three lipid chains (4) rescue the deletion of the GPI biosynthesis in cells devoid of the PIGA, PIGL, and PIGW genes in vitro. The compounds allowed for concentration-dependent recovery of GPI biosynthesis and were highly active on the cytoplasmic face of the ER membrane. These synthetic molecules are leads for the development of treatments for IGDs and tools to study GPI-APs biosynthesis

    The Response of Test Masses to Gravitational Waves in the Coordinates of a Local Observer

    The response of laser interferometers to gravitational waves has been calculated in a number of different ways, particularly in the transverse-traceless and the local Lorentz gauges. At first sight, it would appear that these calculations lead to different results when the separation between the test masses becomes comparable to the wavelength of the gravitational wave. In this paper this discrepancy is resolved. We describe the response of free test masses to plane gravitational waves in the coordinate frame of a local observer and show that it acquires contributions from three different effects: the displacement of the test masses, the apparent change in the photon velocity, and the variation in the clock speed of the local observer, all of which are induced by the gravitational wave. Only when taken together do these three effects represent a quantity which is translationally invariant. This translationally-invariant quantity is identical to the response function calculated in the transverse-traceless gauge. We thus resolve the well-known discrepancy between the two coordinates systems, and show that the results found in the coordinate frame of a local observer are valid for large separation between the masses.Comment: 25 pages, 3 figures, Latex2

    The potential of orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light in data center scenarios is presented. OAMs can be exploited for short reach ultra-high bit rate fiber links and as additional multiplexing domain in transparent ultra-high capacity optical switches. Recent advances on OAM integrated photonic technology are also reported. Finally demonstration of OAM-based fiber links (aggregate throughput 17.9 Tb/s) and two layers OAM-WDM-based optical switches are presented exploiting OAM integrated components and demonstrating the achievable benefits in terms of size, weight and power consumption (SWaP) compared to different technologies

    Effect of extreme data loss on long-range correlated and anti-correlated signals quantified by detrended fluctuation analysis

    We investigate how extreme loss of data affects the scaling behavior of long-range power-law correlated and anti-correlated signals applying the DFA method. We introduce a segmentation approach to generate surrogate signals by randomly removing data segments from stationary signals with different types of correlations. These surrogate signals are characterized by: (i) the DFA scaling exponent α\alpha of the original correlated signal, (ii) the percentage pp of the data removed, (iii) the average length Ό\mu of the removed (or remaining) data segments, and (iv) the functional form of the distribution of the length of the removed (or remaining) data segments. We find that the {\it global} scaling exponent of positively correlated signals remains practically unchanged even for extreme data loss of up to 90%. In contrast, the global scaling of anti-correlated signals changes to uncorrelated behavior even when a very small fraction of the data is lost. These observations are confirmed on the examples of human gait and commodity price fluctuations. We systematically study the {\it local} scaling behavior of signals with missing data to reveal deviations across scales. We find that for anti-correlated signals even 10% of data loss leads to deviations in the local scaling at large scales from the original anti-correlated towards uncorrelated behavior. In contrast, positively correlated signals show no observable changes in the local scaling for up to 65% of data loss, while for larger percentage, the local scaling shows overestimated regions (with higher local exponent) at small scales, followed by underestimated regions (with lower local exponent) at large scales. Finally, we investigate how the scaling is affected by the statistics of the remaining data segments in comparison to the removed segments

    Anomalous NMR Magnetic Shifts in CeCoIn_5

    We report ^{115}In and ^{59}Co Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) measurements in the heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn_5 above and below T_c. The hyperfine couplings of the In and Co are anisotropic and exhibit dramatic changes below 50K due to changes in the crystal field level populations of the Ce ions. Below T_c the spin susceptibility is suppressed, indicating singlet pairing.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Tight binding of Gdown1 represses RNA polymerase II (Pol II) function in a manner that is reversed by Mediator, but the structural basis of these processes is unclear. Although Gdown1 is intrinsically disordered, its Pol II interacting domains were localized and shown to occlude transcription factor IIF (TFIIF) and transcription factor IIB (TFIIB) binding by perfect positioning on their Pol II interaction sites. Robust binding of Gdown1 to Pol II is established by cooperative interactions of a strong Pol II binding region and two weaker binding modulatory regions, thus providing a mechanism both for tight Pol II binding and transcription inhibition and for its reversal. In support of a physiological function for Gdown1 in transcription repression, Gdown1 co-localizes with Pol II in transcriptionally silent nuclei of early Drosophila embryos but re-localizes to the cytoplasm during zygotic genome activation. Our study reveals a self-inactivation through Gdown1 binding as a unique mode of repression in Pol II function

    We determine exactly the ground state of the one-dimensional periodic Anderson model (PAM) in the strong hybridization regime. In this regime, the low energy sector of the PAM maps into an effective Hamiltonian that has a ferromagnetic ground state for any electron density between half and three quarters filling. This rigorous result proves the existence of a new magnetic state that was excluded in the previous analysis of the mixed valence systems.Comment: Accepted in Phys. Rev.

    Further constraints on electron acceleration in solar noise storms

    We reexamine the energetics of nonthermal electron acceleration in solar noise storms. A new result is obtained for the minimum nonthermal electron number density required to produce a Langmuir wave population of sufficient intensity to power the noise storm emission. We combine this constraint with the stochastic electron acceleration formalism developed by Subramanian & Becker (2005) to derive a rigorous estimate for the efficiency of the overall noise storm emission process, beginning with nonthermal electron acceleration and culminating in the observed radiation. We also calculate separate efficiencies for the electron acceleration -- Langmuir wave generation stage and the Langmuir wave -- noise storm production stage. In addition, we obtain a new theoretical estimate for the energy density of the Langmuir waves in noise storm continuum sources.Comment: Accepted for publication in Solar Physic
