In the wake of the many tragic police shootings of young African-American men in recent years, racial profiling by police has emerged as a significant issue within communities of color. But how is this perceived by African-American police officers? In new survey research Lieutenant Charles P. Wilson, Shirley A. Wilson , and Malane Thou find that a majority of these officers believe that racial profiling not only exists, but that it is condoned by agency supervisors. They also find that these officers feel that their presence was important when dealing with communities of color. They argue that the service of African American police officers has tremendous value, both to the agencies that employ them and to the citizens of their communities

Study of the population structure in Schnauzer dogs

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to evaluate the population structure of a Schnauzer dogs kennel. Pedigree data of 129 dogs were collected from a kennel in Southern Brazil. Dogs were divided into groups by height (“miniature”, “standard”, and “giant”) and subsequently, into coat color subgroups (“not informed”, “salt and pepper”, “black”, “white”, and “black and silver”). Population parameters were estimated using the Contribution, Inbreeding, Coancestry (CFC), and RelaX2 programs. Three ancestral generations were traced from the kennel dogs, totaling 685 unique individuals. Of these, 42% were considered founders. The analysis of the effective number of founders, number of effective ancestors, and inbreeding coefficient means were77, 44.9, and 0.08 for the miniature group, 26, 11.7 and 0.05for the standard group, and 28, 9.9 and 0.12 for the giant group, respectively. The subgroup “salt and pepper” in the “giant” group showed the highest inbreeding coefficient (0.14) and the highest kinship coefficient (0.20). Monitoring inbreeding allows to control upcoming breeding to acquire desirable characteristics in the population minimizing risk of deleterious effects

The standard of care and responsibility required of auditors in the detection of fraudulent or illegal activity : the AWA case

The auditor's role in the detection of fraudulent or illegal activities has posed a continuing dilemma. In the 1980's, a lengthy period of large profits made by Bond, Skase and others, was followed by corporate collapses and subsequent findings of significant losses. Recently, the large corporate collapses of HIH, Enron and Worldcom have again posed the question 'where were the auditors'? The auditor's failure to detect major weaknesses, fraud or illegal activities in the failed corporations has led to a widening of the audit expectation gap. This is the gap that exists between what auditors see as their role and what the financial commumity expects. Damaging publicity arising from subsequent litigation where auditors are found negligent focuses further attention on this problem. This research examines the AWA case. In AWA, the audit firm of Deloittes was faced with a combination of factors

The general sport motor function ability of Luxembourgian pupils - An analogy between legends and facts

    Get PDF
The analysis at hand deals with the question as to whether the physical ability of Luxembourgian pupils has altered. To show this, the current data on physical fitness is compared to older reference values. We chose to focus on pupils from the first and second grades aged six to eight because those have not been analyzed in recent studies (Bös et al., 2005) and also because possible causes for an emerging trend are more likely to have affected younger children, as a change in consciousness – coupled with corresponding actions – possibly had a lower chance of becoming effective. Here, two examinations will be discussed, the first of which has been edited and shortened. Two coincidental observations seem to be significant enough to be verified through a repeated random sample. In an additional synopsis, one could draw conclusions on the sport motor function ability of Luxembourgian pupils. Out of this one could initiate curricular and extracurricular physical activities for the students, with focus on the relation and behaviour in these area (Becker, 2008). Results showed that the average performances of the pupils of 1st and 2nd grades in comparison to the old standard values have remained constant, but the form of distribution has changed: There is a higher frequency of well above-average and well below-average performances. The results of Study II demonstrated that children sent to school at the appropriate age show better performances than older children and that boys perform better than girls. Differences between nationalities could not be found

The Brazilian Association of sheep creators (ARCO) acknowledge two varieties for the Morada Nova, white and red. However, the black variety is often eliminated flocks to be disqualified for genealogical record purposes. In previous team study suggests that this variety is very similar to red variety. Thus, the aim of this study was to conduct an analysis of GWAS (Genome-wide association study) to identify genomic regions related to coat color and to confirm the position of the black variety compared to other varieties of sheep that breed. Were used 61 animals (white = 20; black = 20; red = 21), genotyped for OvineSNP50kBeadChip containing 54,241 markers of type SNP (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism). In quality control, is excluded samples with call rate <80%; outliers samples, as autosomal heterozygosity rates, we calculated the 1.5 interquartile ranges (IQR); excludes identical samples or animals over 50% similarity (IBD; PCA and Fst); SNPs without defined positions on chromosomes; monomorphic markers; SNPs with call rate <90%; deviation from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) <0.0001 and the sex chromosomes. We analyzed the association to coat differentiation between the red and black varieties and differentiation between white and non-white animals. After quality control obtained a set of data 45982 SNPs and 48 samples (black = 18, white= 13, red = 17). For GWAS used the dominant model, chi-square test corrected for genomic control. The SNP most significant in GWAS was the s26449.1, this SNP is located at a distance of 163.5 kb MC1R gene. This gene seems to have ground coat role in differentiation process of the black variety of other coats for Morada Nova

Perceptions of African American Police Officers on Racial Profiling in Small Agencies

    No full text
Most assessments of the impact and effects of biased-based policing have been reviewed from the aspect of officer-citizen interaction during traffic stops, with the majority of studies focusing on these occurrences in larger police jurisdictions. Yet police officers themselves, and particularly African American officers, bring a completely different perspective to this issue that has not been fully considered or developed, especially where it concerns the smaller agencies that make up the bulk of the nation’s police community. This study considers the perceptions of African American police officers regarding the presence and impact of biased-based policing in their agencies, as well as their perceptions of the positive or negative effects of their presence in these small local police agencies
