    Factors associated with intestinal parasites among school going children in Lodwar Municipality, Turkana County, Kenya

    Background: Infection by intestinal parasites is a serious health problem affecting an estimated 400 million school age children worldwide. The main objective of the study was to determine the prevalence and factors associated with intestinal parasites among children in 10 schools within Lodwar Municipality in Turkana County, Kenya.Methods: This was a cross-sectional study carried out amongst a sample size of 310 school going children randomly selected from 10 schools. The data collection included background data of participants and laboratory procedures on faecal specimens collected to determine the various intestinal parasites. The data collated was analysed using SPSS for windows version 13.0.1. Chi square was used to determine associations between the various variables.Results: This study recruited 529 participants, of which 43.5% were women and 56.5% were men. Cyst of Entamoeba histolytica was found to be the most common parasite in the samples tested with a prevalence of 76.6%, followed by trophozoites of Giardia lamblia with prevalence of 13.1%, ova of Taenia spp with a prevalence of 5.5% whereas trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica, ova of Ascaris lumbricoides, cyst of Giardia lamblia, and ova of Taenia saginata had a prevalence of below 5%. This current study found no strong association between the source of water and the occurrence of intestinal parasites.Conclusion: Helmithes infections is still a public health concern in Turkana County which, if unchecked, could affect child growth and development. There is need for both the National and County governments to mount series of campaigns and interventions to deworm all children of intestinal infections especially at the family level among the nomadic Turkana community whose environments and lifestyles are fertile grounds for helmithes

    Scopul studiului a fost evaluarea rezultatelor clinico-paraclinice ale afecțiunilor malformative ale peretelui abdominal cu identificarea factorilor de risc congenitali și dobândiți care au influențat prognosticul bolii. MATERIAL ȘI METODE. Evaluarea clinico-epidemiologică a pacienților din lotul general de studiu și analiza rezultatelor tratamentului medico-chirurgical aplicat a fost efectuată în baza datelor extrase din fișele medicale de staționar ale copiilor cu defecte congenitale ale peretelui abdominal internați în staționar pe perioada anilor 2005-2016 în secția de chirurgie a nou-născutului a IMSP Institutul Mamei și Copilului, fiind selectate 64 cazuri clinice de gastroschizis și 59 cazuri de omfalocel. REZULTATELE studiului au permis de a constata că defectele congenitale ale peretelui abdominal (gastroschizis și omfalocel) au fost întâlnite mai frecvent la nou-născuții de sex masculin, cazurile de gastroschizis fiind asociate predominant cu vârsta de gestație prematură și greutatea mică a nou-născuților, comparativ cu lotul de pacienți cu omfalocel unde au predominat nou-născuții la termen cu greutate normală. Au fost stabilite rate semnificativ sporite ale malformațiilor congenitale asociate atât în lotul bolnavilor cu gastroschizis (53,12%), cât și în cel cu omfalocel (61,02%), spectrul acestora fiind dominat de malformațiile tractului digestiv și cele cardiovasculare. CONCLUZIE. Malformațiile congenitale concomitente împreună cu prematuritatea, greutatea mică la naștere, sindromul de compartiment și generalizarea procesului infecțios-septic au influiențat semnificativ evoluția și prognosticul nefavorabil al bolii.The aim of the study was to evaluate the clinical-paraclinical results of the abdominal wall malformations (gastroschisis and omfalocel) with the identification of congenital and acquired risk factors that influenced the prognosis of the disease. MATERIAL AND METHODS. The clinico-epidemiological evaluation of the patients from the general study group and the analysis of the results of the applied medical-surgical treatment was performed based on the data extracted from the stationary medical files of the children with congenital defects of the abdominal wall hospitalized during the period 2005-2016 in the Newborn Surgery Department of the IMSP Institute of the Mother and Child, being selected 64 clinical cases of gastroschisis and 59 cases of omphalocele. THE RESULTS of the study allowed us to find that congenital defects of the abdominal wall (gastroschisis and omphalocele) were more common in male neonates, gastroschisis being predominantly associated with premature gestation age and low weight of newborns compared to the group of patients with omphalocele where predominated term newborns with normal birth weight. There was established the significantly increased rates of congenital malformations associated with both the gastroschisis (53.12%) and the omphalocell (61.02%) patients, dominated by malformations of the digestive tract and cardiovascular ones. CONCLUSION. Concomitant congenital malformations, which together with prematurity, low birth weight, compartment syndrome and generalization of the infectious-septic process, have significantly influenced the progression and unfavorable prognosis of the disease

    The effect of hybrid filler loading on mechanical and physical properties of Epoxy Bio-Composite

    The aim of study was to investigate the mechanical and physical properties of natural hybrid fillers reinforced epoxy composite. Hybrids fillers used in this study were kenaf bast fibers and rice husk. Particulate rice husks were treated with 10% NaOH solution while kenaf bast fibers were treated with 3 wt% of vinyltriethoxysilane in order to improve the adhesion bonding between natural fillers and epoxy matrix. The fillers and matrix were prepared at 5 levels of fillers ratio between kenaf bast fibers and rice husks (10:0, 10:10, 5:15, 3:17 and 0:40). All composites were fabricated using hand lay-up techniques. Mechanical and physical performance of hybrid composites were evaluated and studied. The results revealed that tensile strength of hybrid composite increased from 9.54 MPa to 12.91 MPa while flexural strength of hybrid composites showed increment from 10.86 MPa to 13.11 MPa as kenaf bast fiber loading increased in the hybrid composition. However pure epoxy exhibited higher tensile and flexural strength, 33.44 MPa and 27.75 MPa, respectively compared to those of the hybrid composites. This was mainly due to weak adhesion bonding between hybrid fillers and matrix, agglomeration of kenaf bast fibers and irregularity of shapes and size of rice husks particulates. Water absorption results revealed that hybrid composites water uptake decreased as the rice husks particulates loading increased. This was mainly due to rice husks have rich content of silica which increased the moisture resistance. Kenaf bast fiber reinforced epoxy bio-composite has the highest water intake due to its hydrophilic characteristics
