    Clock-Driven Quantum Thermal Engines

    Get PDF
We consider an isolated autonomous quantum machine, where an explicit quantum clock is responsible for performing all transformations on an arbitrary quantum system (the engine), via a time-independent Hamiltonian. In a general context, we show that this model can exactly implement any energy-conserving unitary on the engine, without degrading the clock. Furthermore, we show that when the engine includes a quantum work storage device we can approximately perform completely general unitaries on the remainder of the engine. This framework can be used in quantum thermodynamics to carry out arbitrary transformations of a system, with accuracy and extracted work as close to optimal as desired, whilst obeying the first and second laws of thermodynamics. We thus show that autonomous thermal machines suffer no intrinsic thermodynamic cost compared to externally controlled ones.Comment: 6 pages, 1 Appendix page, 2 figure

Interleukin 4 Regulates Phosphorylation of Serine 756 in the Transactivation Domain of Stat6: ROLES FOR MULTIPLE PHOSPHORYLATION SITES AND Stat6 FUNCTION

Lymphokines interleukin-4 (IL4) and IL13 exert overlapping biological activities via the shared use of the IL4 receptor α-chain and signal transducer and activator of transcription 6 (Stat6). Stat6 is critical for T-helper 2 cell differentiation, B-cell Ig class switch, and allergic diseases; thus, understanding its regulation is of central importance. Phosphorylation is crucial for Stat activity. Whereas Stat6 is phosphorylated on Tyr641, less is known about serine or threonine. We demonstrate in primary human T-cells (>95% CD3+) that IL4 and for the first time IL13 induce Stat6 serine but not threonine phosphorylation that closely paralleled early IL4 receptor α-chain activation (10 min). Stat6 uniquely fails to share a positionally conserved Stat serine phosphorylation sequence; however, known phosphoacceptor sites are proline-flanked. Alanine substitutions of these conserved residues revealed that the transactivation domain, which localized Ser756 but not Ser827 or Ser176, is the IL4-regulated site based on phosphoamino acid analysis. Tyr641 was dispensable for IL4-mediated serine phosphorylation, suggesting that dimerization is not preconditional. Only Stat6 Y641F variant showed a significant effect on IL4-inducible CÏ” DNA-binding and reporter gene expression. Lastly, recent work has shown that protein phosphatase 2A negatively regulates Stat6 (Woetmann, A., Brockdorff, J., Lovato, P., Nielsen, M., Leick, V., Rieneck, K., Svejgaard, A., Geisler, C., and Odum, N. (2003) J. Biol. Chem. 278, 2787–2791). We propose this target residue(s) is distinct from Ser756 and may be proximal to Tyr641 at Thr645, a residue conserved only among Stat6 members. The phosphomimic variants T645E or T645D ablated Stat6 activation, whereas polar uncharged substitutions (Gln or Asn) and additional mutants (Ala, Val, or Phe) showed no effect. These findings suggest that Stat6 has mechanisms of regulation distinct from other Stats

Evidence for GABA-induced systemic GABA accumulation in Arabidopsis upon wounding

The non-proteinogenic amino acid Îł-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is present in all plant species analyzed so far. Its synthesis is stimulated by either acidic conditions occurring after tissue disruption or higher cytosolic calcium level. In mammals, GABA acts as inhibitory neurotransmitter but its function in plants is still not well understood. Besides its involvement in abiotic stress resistance, GABA has a role in the jasmonate-independent defense against invertebrate pests. While the biochemical basis for GABA accumulation in wounded leaves is obvious, the underlying mechanisms for wounding-induced GABA accumulation in systemic leaves remained unclear. Here, the Arabidopsis thaliana knock-out mutant lines pop2-5, unable to degrade GABA, and tpc1-2, lacking a wounding-induced systemic cytosolic calcium elevation, were employed for a comprehensive investigation of systemic GABA accumulation. A wounding-induced systemic GABA accumulation was detected in tpc1-2 plants demonstrating that an increased calcium level was not involved. Similarly, after both mechanical wounding and Spodoptera littoralis feeding, GABA accumulation in pop2-5 plants was significantly higher in local and systemic leaves, compared to wild-type plants. Consequently, larvae feeding on these GABA-enriched mutant plants grew significantly less. Upon exogenous application of a D2-labeled GABA to wounded leaves of pop2-5 plants, its uptake but no translocation to unwounded leaves was detected. In contrast, an accumulation of endogenous GABA was observed in vascular connected systemic leaves. These results suggest that the systemic accumulation of GABA upon wounding does not depend on the translocation of GABA or on an increase in cytosolic calcium

Quantum Systems Equilibrate Rapidly for Most Observables

Considering any Hamiltonian, any initial state, and measurements with a small number of possible outcomes compared to the dimension, we show that most measurements are already equilibrated. To investigate non-trivial equilibration we therefore consider a restricted set of measurements. When the initial state is spread over many energy levels, and we consider the set of observables for which this state is an eigenstate, most observables are initially out of equilibrium yet equilibrate rapidly. Moreover, all two-outcome measurements, where one of the projectors is of low rank, equilibrate rapidly.Comment: Main Text: 5 pages, 1 figure. Appendices: 7 pages, 1 figur

Two new species of Odontostilbe historically hidden under O. microcephala (Characiformes: Cheirodontinae)

Specimens historically identified as Odontostilbe microcephala from the upper rio ParanĂĄ and Andean piedmont tributaries of the rĂo Paraguay are reviewed and split in three species. We found that the distribution of O. microcephala is restricted to the Andean slope of the rĂo Paraguay basin. The species is distinguished from congeners with subterminal mouth by the elongate body, usually 10-12 gill rakers on upper branch and smaller horizontal orbital diameter (24.6-32.8 % HL, mean 28.7%). Specimens from upper rio ParanĂĄ constitute two new species, diagnosed from other Cheirodontinae by the presence of mesopterygoid teeth, grouped on median portion and forming a continuous row. The new species are distinguished from each other by having premaxillary teeth with five cusps vs. nine cusps and by the number of lamellae in left and right sides of central median raphe of olfactory rosette with 20-21 vs. 11-12.EspĂ©cimes historicamente identificados com Odontostilbe microcephala do rio ParanĂĄ e tributĂĄrios do rĂo Paraguay, foram revisados e separados em trĂȘs espĂ©cies.

    Comparing classical and quantum equilibration

By using a physically relevant and theory independent definition of measurement-based equilibration, we show quantitatively that equilibration is easier for quantum systems than for classical systems, in the situation where the initial state of the system is completely known (a pure state). This shows that quantum equilibration is a fundamental aspect of many quantum systems, while classical equilibration relies on experimental ignorance. When the state is not completely known (a mixed state), this framework also shows that quantum equilibration requires weaker conditions
