Application Design to Incentivize Medication Adherence for Chronic Care

    Get PDF
This research is motivated by the current trend towards utilization of mobile technology in healthcare interventions. Despite academic and practitioner efforts, lack of medication adherence continues to be a leading indicator of poor health outcomes and increased hospitalizations worldwide especially for chronic care patients (McQuaid and Landier 2018; Sweeney et al.and Vanable 2016; Yang and Varshney 2016). Our focus area is on gamification-based mobile applications designed for improvingto incentivize and improve patient medication adherence. We have conducted an initial survey of mobile applications in the medication adherence space and their features. Our analysis of the current research academic literature and review of existing medication adherence applications indicates a research gap and an opportunity to create a significant contribution through the research-based design of an application that provides a solution to the complex practical problem of medication adherence in chronic disease management. We propose the design and evaluation of an application to improve medication adherence for patients with chronic disorders through incentives. Our results provide more information on the feasibility of incentives and mobile applications as ways to positively influence patient behavior. The contribution of this research is a novel design comprising a combination of multiple intervention and incentive types to improve medication adherence. While the initial design and development will adopt a means-end, idiographic approach to the solution design, further iterations will be used to derive nomothetic design knowledge on the design of incentivizing applications. Our practical contribution addresses the problem of medication adherence by applying technology to behavioral incentives in a planned, user-centric way

Sea snail gonggong is an icon of Tanjungpinang-Riau Islands Province. It is a favorite seafood item in Riau Islands Province, and is high economic value but not known widely yet. Until now, sea snail gonggong has been highly exploited but the research on this snail is very limited. The aim of this study was to morphology and molecular characterization of Bintan gonggong snail (Strombus sp.) as a species validation. Bintan gonggong snail included thick-shelled gonggong and thin-shelled gonggong. Morphology identifcation of species Bintan gonggong snail was based on morphometric variability. Molecular identifcation used partial Histone-H3, MEGA version 6.06, and bioinformatics analysis. The result showed that the morphological identifcation of thick-shelled and thin-shelled gonggong based on shell width, the lip thickness, and total weight signifcantly different, but other variables (i.e shell length, shell depth, aperture length, and gonggong weight) were not signifcantly different (p<0.05). Resulted of a molecular identifcation with phylogenetic analysis that the thin-shelled and thick-shelled Bintan gonggong snails were 1 species and a genetic distance of 1%. They were not species Strombus canarium, Strombus vitatus, and Strombus epidromis. Bintan gonggong snails were Strombus turturella (Leavistrombus turturella). DNA sequences of Bintan gonggong have been registered in Gen-Bank with registration numbers MH348131 (thinshelled gonggong) and MH348132 (thick-shelled gonggong)

One example of the incidence of cases is hypertension. The life quality of patients with hypertension found several influencing factors, namely internal factors such as medication adherence and external factors such as family support. Compliance with treatment of hypertension patients requires a long period of time, so support from the family is needed. The purpose of this research is to determine whether there is a relationship between family support, medication adherence and quality of life in the Ranomuut Health Center Work Area, Manado City. Analytical survey is the method used with a cross sectional study. The population are 163 respondents with hypertension and the number of samples are 90 respondents. Porposive sampling is a technique in taking the sample. The data collection was done by using a questionnaire measuring instrument. Data processing uses Chi-Square test statistics at the significance level of 5% (α = 0.05).The results of the research analysis of the relationship between medication adherence and life quality of hypertension patients, the results obtained p value = 0.000 <0.05 and the relationship between family support and life quality of hypertension patients, the results obtained p value = 0.000 < 0.05. The results obtained in the Working Area of the Ranomuut Health Center, Manado City. There is a relationship between adherence to medication, family support and quality of life. Keywords: Quality of life, hypertension, medication adherence, family support

Design of e-shoe for Visually Impaired by Using RFID Technology

    Get PDF
It is a known fact that blind people find it extremely difficult to detect their way through obstacles and stairs. Using a white stick to detect the obstacles had been an age old method, which cannot provide complete solution. In order to overcome this problem, an obstacle detecting shoe is developed. It senses the obstacle through ultrasonic sensors and alerts the user through the message. The ultrasonic waves transmitted are reflected by the obstacles and echo is received by the ultrasonic receiver, where the distance is calculated by using a microprocessor. The RFID system is used to assist the blind people. When the reader located on the shoe moves on to a specific tag, unique tag ID is sent to the reader. While in the case of walking in traffic, RF Link Transmitter/receiver is used for traffic signal detection and for passing instructions to the user through voice messages. A timer is used to detect the wet areas and helps the blind to avoid slippery.

A Spectroscopic Reconnaissance of UV-Bright Stars

We have carried out spectroscopic observations and made preliminary classifications of 62 UV-bright stars identified by Lanning on plates taken by A. Sandage. The goal was to search for "interesting" objects, such as emission-line stars, hot sub-dwarfs, and high-gravity stars. Our targets were grouped into two samples, a bright, B < 13, sample of 35 stars observed with the Kitt Peak 2.1m telescope and a faint, 13< B < 16, sample of 27 stars observed with the Hobby-Eberly Telescope. We find 39% fairly normal O-mid B stars, 15% late ~B-late A stars and 32% F-G stars, with 13% of the stars being high gravity objects, composite, or otherwise peculiar. Included are four emission-line stars, three composite systems. Thus one out of every ten Lanning stars is "interesting" and may deserve individual study. Stars in the bright sample are often found to be late F or early G stars, although this sample does include interesting stars as well. No such large contamination occurs among the fainter stars, however, owing to "deselection" of these stars by interstellar reddening in the low-latitude fields of the survey.Comment: 9 pages in total, to appear in February 2002 issue of P.A.S.
