Board size and corporate risk-taking: Further evidence from Japan

    Get PDF
Evidence based on US firms suggests that large boards restrain risk taking. We investigate whether a similar effect exists in Japan. Our results confirm that firms with larger boards exhibit lower performance variability relative to firms with smaller boards. However, this effect is less significant when firms have plenty of investment opportunities, but considerably stronger when firms have few growth options. This new finding is consistent with recent evidence indicating that larger boards are not necessarily detrimental to firm performance. The results are shown to be robust to the endogeneity of board structure and the use of alternative risk measures and estimation methods

Education is provided through a number of channels. Non formal education, which is best equipped to prepare young people to cope with social changes, is underestimated and opportunities to benefit from it are not fully realised. In this study, the Boy Scout Movement is assumed to be one case study, and the Business Object Modeling is described. The Business Object is not one of the mere application development methods. It tries to catch the entire enterprise (Business) by Object-Oriented. The Scout Movement is being composed by various systems. Formal Education is also the same. Accelerated changes in society have significant implications for young people and theeducational opportunities available to them need to reflect these changes. In this study, an actual activity (business process) is made an object with use case. And, these objects are targeted in the business modeling, it proposes reengineering, and the utility is studied

Clustering of Emission-line Stars in the W5E HII region

We have made a new survey of emission-line stars in the W5E HII region to investigate the population of PMS stars near the OB stars by using the Wide Field Grism Spectrograph 2 (WFGS2). A total of 139 H-alpha emission stars were detected and their g'i'-photometry was performed. The spatial distribution of them shows three aggregates, i.e., two aggregates near the bright-rimmed clouds at the edge of W5E HII region (BRC 13 and BRC 14) and one near the exciting O7V star. The age and mass of each H-alpha star were estimated from the extinction corrected color-magnitude diagram and theoretical evolutionary tracks. We found, for the first time in this region, that the young stars near the exciting star are systematically older (4 Myr) than those near the edge of the HII region (1 Myr). This result supports that the formation of stars proceed sequentially from the center of HII region to the eastern bright rim. We further suggest a possibility that the birth of low mass stars near the exciting star of HII region precede the production of massive OB stars in the pre-existing molecular cloud.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in PAS

New Identification of the Mixed-Morphology Supernova Remnant G298.6-0.0 with Possible Gamma-ray Association

We present an X-ray analysis on the Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) G298.6-0.0 with Suzaku. The X-ray image shows a center-filled structure inside the radio shell, implying this SNR is categorized as a mixed-morphology (MM) SNR. The spectrum is well reproduced by a single temperature plasma model in ionization equilibrium, with a temperature of 0.78 (0.70-0.87) keV. The total plasma mass of 30 solar mass indicates that the plasma has interstellar medium origin. The association with a GeV gamma-ray source 3FGL J1214.0-6236 on the shell of the SNR is discussed, in comparison with other MM SNRs with GeV gamma-ray associations. It is found that the flux ratio between absorption-corrected thermal X-rays and GeV gamma-rays decreases as the MM SNRs evolve to larger physical sizes. The absorption-corrected X-ray flux of G298.6-0.0 and the GeV gamma-ray flux of 3FGL J1214.0-6236 closely follow this trend, implying that 3FGL J1214.0-6236 is likely to be the GeV counterpart of G298.6-0.0.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, PASJ, in pres
