Professional communication competence in English for occupational purposes (EOP) courses: A systematic literature review and proposal of a framework

    Get PDF
This paper reports a systematic literature review that was conducted to explore the areas of research pertaining to English language workplace communication needs in order to design courses in English for Occupational Purposes (EOP) that can better meet the demands of the industry. Articles from Scopus, ScienceDirect and Emerald Insight were extracted following the five-step method of conducting a systematic literature review. In total, 133 articles were analysed. From the analysis, it was found that most studies focused on examining the needs of the learners, or the needs of the industry; very few studies triangulated the findings between different stakeholders to obtain a better picture of the needs, wants, and gaps between the target situation and the present situation. Additionally, most studies focused on language tasks required and did not pay due emphasis on the competencies required to perform the tasks well. Thus, the outcome of this review is a proposed theoretical model to develop professional communication competence among new graduates that is intended to be used in a future study to address the gaps found in this review. Practically, the review also sheds light on gaps that exist in current research that can be addressed in future research, especially for higher education institutions (HEIs) that are working to design and develop courses in EOP to improve English language communication skills for employability

    Get PDF
A movie is a type of literary work to entertain and convey a value or message to the viewer. The movie strives to communicate moral values, which are considered positive attitudes that could be adopted by everyone. This study aims to identify and analyze the moral values contained in the one-piece anime movies "Z" and "Stampede”. This study uses a grounded theory approach to the descriptive-qualitative method and analyze the moral values in the movies by using Sulistiyani’s moral theories. This study focuses on analyzing two anime films from the One Piece series, namely Z and Stampede. This research findings shows that numerous morals can drive and teach us as viewers. The morals found in the movies are courage, self-sacrifice, honesty, justice, wisdom, respect and appreciation, hard work, fulfilling promises, supporting others, and working together. Unfortunately, belief in God's values is not found in these movies since the themes of these movies are action, adventure, and, most significantly, friendship. Moreover, the moral values mostly delivered in these movies are helping others. Finally, the researcher suggests that the viewers not only derive enjoyment from the movie's plot but also apply its moral values to enhance their own character to become better individuals

    Get PDF
This paper presents about power generation by using piezoelectric transducer with bending mechanism support. In this study, bending mechanism is developed by employing 3D printer technology. This 3D model is used as a support for a piezoelectric transducer during deflection or bending process. During deflection condition, stress that applied on the piezoelectric transducer will generate electrical energy. The 3D model helps the piezoelectric transducer to produce more voltage output. A finger press test used as evaluation method for the voltage output of the piezoelectric transducer. The experiment is tested by varying three different 3D model with the different diameter for the middle hole for each of the model. A round shape of the piezoelectric transducer with size of 50 mm in diameter is used to conduct the experiment. Thus, when the piezoelectric transducer placed on the 3D model with 0 mm in diameter of middle hole will producing 5.4 V voltage output. However, 3D model with 30 mm diameter of middle hole, the output increases up to 19.0 V. The output voltage for piezoelectric transducer reached its highest voltage when placed on the 3D model with middle hole of 40 mm which is 34.4 V. This bending mechanism can be used to increase the output of piezoelectric transducer as it applied underneath footstep tile at crowded area to harvest the energy produced from walking activities. The power generated can be used to power up various electronic devices

About 50% is of harvest is wasted when producing rattan furniture. With such huge amount of waste, we undertook a study to convert rattan waste into binderless board with superior properties. This study compared the mechanical and physical properties and morphologies of binderless boards manufactured from rattan fibres with boards made from kenaf, coconut husk and sugarcane bagasse using hot press process. Raw fibres were characterised using scanning electron microscopy and thermal analysis to study their suitability in producing self-bonded board, and then dried in the oven before being hot pressed at a pressure of 147.5 kPa. Modulus of rupture (MOR), internal bonding strength, thickness swelling and water absorption of the manufactured binderless boards were evaluated based on the Japanese Industrial Standards. Results showed that rattan binderless boards exhibited slightly lower MOR and higher internal bonding strength with good dimensional stability compared with the rest of the binderless boards. It was concluded that rattan fibres have high potential to be used as binderless boards under hot press conditions

This study aims to determine the level of acceptance and perception and behavior of the Muslim and non-Muslim toward halal products. This study is based on a survey of 300 respondents randomly selected. Data collected using questionnaires. Consumer behavior towards the adoption of available products is high and it is found that consumers are very highly concerned about food preparation factors are ordered from legitimate sources. In general, the frequency of residents in Lembah Pantai visiting the restaurant is every day namely working respondents. In addition, the cleanliness of the restaurant is one of the factors influencing the selection of respondents in regular restaurants. However, the results showed that the respondents were not so concerned with the cleanliness factor as long as the restaurant food was available to be served from legitimate sources and clean. The study concluded that restaurant operators should emphasize the preparation of food from halal sources and ingredients to the customers. Either recommendation has been made to the owners of restaurants to prioritize sanitation in the restaurant or involving the workers themselves to ensure hygiene is always guaranteed. Government agencies to tighten the licensing and regulation of halal logo to restaurant operators to ensure that the use of food ingredients is completely clean, pure and halal

    Get PDF
A porous supports were fabricated from Sayong ball clay and Kankara clay for wastewater treatment application using simple compaction method. The influence of sintering temperature (900-1200 °C) and starch addition (5-30 wt%) on the physical properties and flexural strength of the porous support were studied. Thermo-gravimetric analysis, particle size distribution, microstructure, phase, porosimetry analysis and strength analysis were studied to characterize the porous supports. The apparent porosity and pore diameter of Kankara porous support (48-55%; 6.62nm) was found to be higher than that of Sayong porous support (0.07-40%; 5.11nm). In contrast, the bulk density of Sayong porous support (1.15-1.93g/cm3) was higher than that of Kankara porous support (1.08-1.25g/cm3). However, the flexural strength of Kankara porous support (34-3MPa) shows sharp decrease compared with Sayong porous support (21-9MPa). This shows that Sayong porous support has better physical properties and flexural strength compared with Kankara porous support. Starch has been a good pore former in fabrication of the ceramic membrane. Sintering temperature and starch content have strong influence on the physical and flexural strength of the porous support. Therefore, the properties of the porous support can be varied by controlling the sintering temperature and starch content

    Get PDF
Microfiltration membrane made from Sayong ball clay by using uniaxial dry compaction method was used to treat natural organic matter (NOM) source water. A sintering temperature of 900°C to 1000°C were applied. The effect of sintering temperature on membrane porosity, strength and water flux were identified. The porosity of the membrane decreased with increasing sintering temperature and the strength and flux increased with temperature. The membrane was subjected to NOM filtration experiments. The results showed an improvement to the quality of permeate water, where there is a reduction in COD, TSS, BOD5, turbidity, hardness and salinity; and an increased pH value. The effect of chemical cleaning on the fouled membrane also was studied. After cleaning with NaOH solution, a high flux recovery was achieved (up to 50% from the initial pure water flux). The degree of cleanliness of fouled membranes after chemical cleaning was further observed with SEM and EDX analysis
