Relaxation times for Hamiltonian systems
Usually, the relaxation times of a gas are estimated in the frame of the
Boltzmann equation. In this paper, instead, we deal with the relaxation problem
in the frame of the dynamical theory of Hamiltonian systems, in which the
definition itself of a relaxation time is an open question. We introduce a
lower bound for the relaxation time, and give a general theorem for estimating
it. Then we give an application to a concrete model of an interacting gas, in
which the lower bound turns out to be of the order of magnitude of the
relaxation times observed in dilute gases.Comment: 26 page
2D-2C Particle Image Velocimetry analysis of contra-rotating propellers hydrodynamics
Contra-rotating propellers represent a non-conventional approach for marine propulsion whose main advantage lies in the increase of propulsive efficiency. This is achieved by recovering part of the energy loss due to the rotational flow generated by a single propeller by means of a contra-rotating downstream propeller. The hydrodynamics of such configuration is quite complex due to the interaction between upstream and downstream propellers and a deep understanding of their features is critical to driving the design phase. In this work a methodology based on planar (2D-2C) Particle Velocimetry is presented to investigate on the flow in the wake of two contra-rotating propellers. An ad-hoc mixed hardware and software phase-locking technique is developed in order to analyze the contribution of each propeller to the overall hydrodynamics of the system
Composición multielemental y valor nutricional de "dumosa" (Ilex dumosa), "yerba mate" (I. paraguariensis) y su mezcla comercial en diferentes formas de uso
The multielement composition and nutritional value of "dumosa" (Ilex dumosa) (ID),
"yerba mate" (I. paraguariensis) (IP) and their commercial 70:30 mixture (ID:IP, w/w)
in crude drug, brewed mate and tea-bag-like infusion were studied by ICP-OES. This
method allowed the detection of an unprecedented number of elements for these
species. The order was K>Ca>Mg>P>Mn>Al>Na>Si>Fe in crude drug. IP showed higher
concentration of minerals than ID, but most extractability in the latter largely offset its
shortcomings. Brewed mate had higher nutritional value than mate tea because their
higher solute/solvent ratio. A portion of brewed mate of both species exceeded the daily
recommended intake (DRI) of Mn, and providing Mg, Cu, Fe, Zn and K, too. The portions of
mate tea not contribute significantly to the DRI. Some essential trace elements and many
ultra-traces ones that exist in crude drug were not detected in aqueous extracts. Most of
the heavy metals were not leached into extracts, and in any case never exceeded international
safety limits. Therefore, the aqueous extracts of ID and IP and its mixture are
interesting from the nutritional point of view in minerales, and safe in terms of health.

The infusion at 1.5% of yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis A.St.-Hil.) (Ip) corresponds to
"cooked mate" (MC), whose combination with milk (50:50 v/v) (M) and refined sugar (S) is
the "mate cocido with milk", a popular food in southern South America offered to preschool
and primary education students (3-13 years old) in Argentina. Another species of the
genus, I. dumosa Reissek (Id), has low caffeine; appears in the market as an Id:Ip (70:30
w/w) mixture. The substitution of Ip by the mentioned mixture maintains analogous nutritional
values and significantly lowers the caffeine levels (α=0.05); this allows for a higher
consumption of the food during the day, without reaching the xanthine daily limits (40-100
mg day-1) for the age range, favoring the students intellectual and physical performance
without adverse effects. The daily intake of a double serving (breakfast and afternoon snack)
of MC+M+S provides high energy and is a source of carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins A, B1,
B2, B5, B6, and B12, biotin and essential minerals (Mn, P, Zn, Cu, Ca, Mg, Na, Cl, K, Fe and Al), with
low cholesterol. The nutritional parameters are within international limits. Heavy metals do
not make it to the infusion or they remain well below harmful values.
vitaminas A, B1, B2, B5, B6 y B12, biotina y minerales esenciales (Mn, P, Zn, Cu, Ca, Mg, Na,
Cl, K, Fe y Al), con bajo colesterol. Los parámetros nutricionales están comprendidos
dentro de límites internacionales. Los metales pesados no pasan a la infusión, o están
muy por debajo de los valores peligrosos.Fil: Maiocchi, Marcos G..

Aliskiren inhibits prorenin-induced human aortic smooth muscle cell migration
Background: In the present study, we investigated the potential effect of aliskiren on smooth muscle cell (SMC) migration in response to prorenin. Methods: Cultured human SMCs were incubated with angiotensinogen (ANG) (1.5 10-7M) and increasing concentrations of aliskiren (10-610-5M). After 24 h, SMC migration was assessed by Boydens chamber chemotactic assay using prorenin as chemotactic factor (10-8M). The effect of aliskiren on RhoA and Rac activity was also determined by G-LISA assay and the lamellipodia formation by rhodaminephalloidin staining. Changes in cell morphology were recorded in real-time using the iCelligence system. Results: Aliskiren determined, at 10-5M, a significant inhibition of SMC migration induced by prorenin (-66.418.1%; p > 0.05), while no significant effect was observed when PDGF-BB was utilized as chemotactic agent. Aliskiren also reduced Rac-GTP levels in response to prorenin (-54.2\ub15.4%) without affecting the RhoA-GTP levels. Finally, aliskiren inhibited both the lamellipodia formation and morphological changes induced by prorenin with no significant effect on PDGF-BB activity. Conclusions: Taken together, we provide the first evidence of the inhibitory action of aliskiren on SMC migration induced by prorenin

SARS-CoV-2 modulates virus receptor expression in placenta and can induce trophoblast fusion, inflammation and endothelial permeability
SARS-CoV-2 is a devastating virus that induces a range of immunopathological mechanisms including cytokine storm, apoptosis, inflammation and
complement and coagulation pathway hyperactivation. However, how the infection impacts pregnant mothers is still being worked out due to evidence of vertical transmission of the SARS-CoV-2, and higher incidence of preeclampsia, preterm birth, caesarian section, and fetal mortality. In this study, we assessed the levels of the three main receptors of SARS-CoV-2 (ACE2, TMPRSS2 and CD147) in placentae derived from SARS-CoV-2 positive and negative mothers. Moreover, we measured the effects of Spike protein on placental cell lines, in addition to their susceptibility to infection. SARS-CoV-2 negative placentae showed elevated levels of CD147 and considerably low amount of TMPRSS2, making them non-permissive to infection. SARS-CoV-2 presence upregulated TMPRSS2 expression in syncytiotrophoblast and cytotrophoblast cells, thereby rendering them amenable to infection. The non-permissiveness of placental cells can be due to their less fusogenicity due to infection. We also found that Spike protein was capable of inducing proinflammatory cytokine production, syncytiotrophoblast apoptosis and increased vascular permeability. These events can elicit pre-eclampsia-like syndrome that marks a high percentage of pregnancies when mothers areinfected with SARS-CoV-2. Our study raises important points relevant to SARSCoV- 2 mediated adverse pregnancy outcomes
Isolation of single circulating trophoblasts from maternal circulation for noninvasive fetal copy number variant profiling
ObjectiveTo develop a multi-step workflow for the isolation of circulating extravillous trophoblasts (cEVTs) by describing the key steps enabling a semi-automated process, including a proprietary algorithm for fetal cell origin genetic confirmation and copy number variant (CNV) detection. MethodsDetermination of the limit of detection (LoD) for submicroscopic CNV was performed by serial experiments with genomic DNA and single cells from Coriell cell line biobank with known imbalances of different sizes. A pregnancy population of 372 women was prospectively enrolled and blindly analyzed to evaluate the current workflow. ResultsAn LoD of 800 Kb was demonstrated with Coriell cell lines. This level of resolution was confirmed in the clinical cohort with the identification of a pathogenic CNV of 800 Kb, also detected by chromosomal microarray. The mean number of recovered cEVTs was 3.5 cells per sample with a significant reverse linear trend between gestational age and cEVT recovery rate and number of recovered cEVTs. In twin pregnanices, evaluation of zygosity, fetal sex and copy number profiling was performed in each individual cell. ConclusionOur semi-automated methodology for the isolation and single-cell analysis of cEVTS supports the feasibility of a cell-based noninvasive prenatal test for fetal genomic profiling. © 2022 A. Validation of three predictive models for suboptimal cytoreductive surgery in advanced ovarian cancer
The standard treatment for advanced ovarian cancer (AOC) is cytoreduction surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy. Tumor volume after surgery is a major prognostic factor for these patients. The ability to perform complete cytoreduction depends on the extent of disease and the skills of the surgical team. Several predictive models have been proposed to evaluate the possibility of performing complete cytoreductive surgery (CCS). External validation of the prognostic value of three predictive models (Fagotti index and the R3 and R4 models) for predicting suboptimal cytoreductive surgery (SCS) in AOC was performed in this study. The scores of the 3 models were evaluated in one hundred and three consecutive patients diagnosed with AOC treated in a tertiary hospital were evaluated. Clinicopathological features were collected prospectively and analyzed retrospectively. The performance of the three models was evaluated, and calibration and discrimination were analyzed. The calibration of the Fagotti, R3 and R4 models showed odds ratios of obtaining SCSs of 1.5, 2.4 and 2.4, respectively, indicating good calibration. The discrimination of the Fagotti, R3 and R4 models showed an area under the ROC curve of 83%, 70% and 81%, respectively. The negative predictive values of the three models were higher than the positive predictive values for SCS. The three models were able to predict suboptimal cytoreductive surgery for advanced ovarian cancer, but they were more reliable for predicting CCS. The R4 model discriminated better because it includes the laparotomic evaluation of the peritoneal carcinomatosis index
