Advances in the physics studies for the JT-60SA tokamak exploitation and research plan
JT-60SA, the largest tokamak that will operate before ITER, has been designed and built jointly by Japan and Europe, and is due to start operation in 2020. Its main missions are to support ITER exploitation and to contribute to the demonstration fusion reactor machine and scenario design. Peculiar properties of JT-60SA are its capability to produce long-pulse, high-ß, and highly shaped plasmas. The preparation of the JT-60SA Research Plan, plasma scenarios, and exploitation are producing physics results that are not only relevant to future JT-60SA experiments, but often constitute original contributions to plasma physics and fusion research. Results of this kind are presented in this paper, in particular in the areas of fast ion physics, high-beta plasma properties and control, and non-linear edge localised mode stability studies.Postprint (published version
Plasma physics and control studies planned in JT-60SA for ITER and DEMO operations and risk mitigation
Alarge superconducting machine, JT-60SA has been constructed to provide major contributions to the ITER program and DEMO design. For the success of the ITER project and fusion reactor, understanding and development of plasma controllability in ITER and DEMO relevant higher beta regimes are essential. JT-60SA has focused the program on the plasma controllability for scenario development and risk mitigation in ITER as well as on investigating DEMO relevant regimes. This paper summarizes the high research priorities and strategy for the JT-60SA project. Recent works on simulation studies to prepare the plasma physics and control experiments are presented, such as plasma breakdown and equilibrium controls, hybrid and steady-state scenario development, and risk mitigation techniques. An annual report 2014 on campus wide Faculty Development programs at The University of Tokushima
FD promotion programs have started from 2002, promoting systematization, organization and routinization of Faculty Development. In 2014, based on the results of 12 years of FD, we have aimed to enhance the quality of higher education of our university, building new educational system for assurance of higher education. The Center for the Enhancement of Teaching & Learning was restructured into the Center of University Education. Thus, based on the guideline for educational innovation of our university, the organization for promoting FD was strengthened. Concretely, we carried out 3 programs; 1) educational innovation FD, 2) educational development FD, 3) comprehensive FD. As to each program, we showed their outlines and considered their results and problems shown from the questionnaire to their attendants
Suppressive effects of 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC)-polymer on the adherence of Candida species and MRSA to acrylic denture resin
Objectives: The effects of 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC)-polymer on the adherence of microorganisms such as non-Candida albicans Candida (NCAC) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), frequently detected in oral infections in immunocompromised and/or elderly people, to denture resin material, are still unclear. Here, we report the effects of MPC-polymer on the adherence of C. albicans, NCAC, and MRSA to acrylic denture resin.
Methods: Sixteen strains of C. albicans, seven strains of C. glabrata, two strains of C. tropicalis, one strain of C. parapsilosis, and six strains of MRSA were used. We cultured the fungal/bacterial strains and examined the cell growth and adherence of fungi/bacteria to mucin-coated acrylic denture resin plates (ADRP) with or without MPC-polymer coating, by scanning electron microscopy. The cell surface hydrophobicity of the fungal/bacterial strains was measured by the adsorption to hydrocarbons.
Results: MPC-polymer did not affect the growth of all strains of Candida species and MRSA, but significantly suppressed adherence to ADRP in most strains of C. albicans and all strains of NCAC and MRSA. A significant positive correlation was found between cell hydrophobicity and the reduction rates of microbial adherence to ADRP treated with 5% of MPC-polymer.
Conclusions: MPC-polymer treatment for acrylic resin material suppresses the adherence of C. albicans, NCAC and MRSA via their hydrophilicity interaction.
Clinical significance: The application of MPC-polymer for denture hygiene is potent to prevent oral candidiasis, denture stomatitis and opportunistic infection, caused by Candida species and MRSA, via suppressing the adherence of those fungus/bacteria

Tokushima University’s FD promotion programs have started since 2002, promoting systematization, organization and routinization of Faculty Development. In 2015, in addition to the previous FD promotion programs, we have aimed to enhance the quality of higher education of our university, supporting effective implementation of Ministry of Education’s AP (=Acceleration Program for University Education Rebuilding) & building new educational system “Numbering System” for the assurance of higher education. Concretely, we carried out 3 programs; 1) educational innovation FD, 2) educational development FD, 3) comprehensive FD. As to each program, we showed their outlines and considered their results and problems shown from the questionnaire to their attendants
