Cartilage loss patterns within femorotibial contact regions during deep knee bend
AbstractOsteoarthritis (OA) can alter knee kinematics and stresses. The relationship between cartilage loss in OA and kinematics is unclear, with existing work focusing on static wear and morphology. In this work, femorotibial cartilage maps were coupled with kinematics to investigate the relationship between kinematics and cartilage loss, allowing for more precise treatment and intervention. Cartilage thickness maps were created from healthy and OA subgroups (varus, valgus, and neutral) and mapped to a statistical bone atlas. Video fluoroscopy determined contact regions from 0° to 120° flexion. Varus and valgus subgroups displayed different wear patterns across the range of flexion, with varus knees showing more loss in early flexion and valgus in deeper flexion. For the femur, varus knees had more wear in the medial compartment than neutral or valgus and most wear at both 0° and 20° flexion. In the lateral femoral compartment, the valgus subgroup showed significantly more wear from 20° to 60° flexion as compared to other angles, though varus knees displayed highest magnitude of wear. For the tibia, most medial wear occurred at 0–40° flexion and most lateral occurred after 60° flexion. Knowing more about cartilage changes in OA knees provides insight as to expected wear or stresses on implanted components after arthroplasty. Combining cartilage loss patterns with kinematics allows for pre-surgical intervention and treatments tailored to the patient׳s alignment and kinematics. Reported wear patterns may also serve as a gauge for post-operative loading to be considered when placing implant components
Genetic variation among Northern and Southern Egyptian buffaloes using polymerase chain reaction-random amplified polymorphic DNA (PCR-RAPD)
The domestic water buffalo is a species of great economic potential, especially in developing countries like Egypt. Egyptian buffalo have been classified according to minor phenotypic differences and their geographical locations. Few studies have taken place to investigate the genetic variations in Egyptian buffalo using microsatellites analysis. In the present study, 11 random primers were analyzed for the genetic diversity determination between Northern and Southern Egyptian buffaloes using polymerase chain reaction-random amplified polymorphic DNA (PCR-RAPD) analysis. 169 bands were amplified for the analyzed 11 random primers, from which 160 bands (94.67%) for North populations and 168 bands for South population (99.41%). Out of the 160 amplified bands in North populations, 152 bands were polymorphic with a percentage of 89.94% and only one specific band (0.59%). In South population, all 168 amplified bands were polymorphic, nine bands (5.33%) were specific for this population. The identity index and the genetic distance between North and South populations were measured. The results showed that the two tested populations have the same origin and belong to one breed without significant genetic difference between their animals.Key words: Buffalo, genetic diversity, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD)
Exploring the Intersection of Depression, Anxiety, and Sexual Health in Perimenopausal Women

Concurrently, hormonal changes, coupled with alterations in vaginal tissue, lead to sexual dysfunction during this transitional phase. This study aimed at evaluating the association between menopausal symptoms and sexual dysfunction among perimenopausal women and identifying the mediating effects of depression and anxiety on this association.Patients and Methods: Data for the present cross-sectional study were collected from participants via Arabic versions of three questionnaires; the modified Menopausal Rating Scale (MRS), the Female Sexual Functioning Index (FSFI) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale (HADS).Results: Our study was conducted on 149 females with age ranged from 45 to 55 years. On studying the relation between modified MRS and HADS, the menopausal symptoms were significantly high among female with high anxiety scores. Regarding the relationship between MRS and FSFI, women with anxiety and physical and mental exhaustion had significantly lower FSFI scores than women without such symptoms (19.2 [2– 31.4] vs 21.7 [3.8– 30.9], p = 0.04, respectively). Furthermore, there were statistically significant negative correlations between depression scores and sexual desire (r = − 0.32, p < 0.001), arousal (r = − 0.25, p = 0.003), and total FSFI scores (r = − 0.27, p = 0.04).Conclusion: Perimenopausal women experience a confluence of challenges related to depression, anxiety, and sexual dysfunction. Understanding the interconnectedness of hormonal and psychosocial factors is essential for tailored interventions aimed at improving mental health and sexual well-being during this transitional phase.Keywords: anxiety, depression, perimenopausal, sexual dysfunctio
Experimental Investigation of Permeability and Fluid Loss Properties of Water Based Mud Under High Pressure-High Temperature Conditions
ABSTRACT Drilling in deeper formations and in high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) environments is a new frontier for the oil industry. Fifty years ago, no one would have imagined drilling in more than 10,000 feet of water depth like we do today. However, more issues need to be researched, tested, and studied in order to maintain a good drilling efficiency as deeper depths are drilled. One of these issues is the great effect that drilling at HPHT conditions has on the behavior of drilling fluids. The goal of this research was to study fluid loss properties of water based mud and its effect on permeability under HPHT dynamic conditions utilizing advanced laboratory equipment that allows for wide ranges of pressure and temperature. Filtration tests were performed at both ambient and HPHT conditions. After several laboratory evaluations of fluid loss additives available in the market, Polysal HT was found to be the most effective in reducing the fluid loss of the water based mud for both static and dynamic tests at HPHT conditions. It is economically designed to be saturated in salt and other brine system. An additive that encapsulates particles with protective polymer coating as colloid. Drilling fluid stabilizer especially in drilling hydratable shale and a remarkable effectiveness in wide range make up water (high saline and high hardness). The fluid loss behavior of the mud and the characteristics of the filter cake produced are the basic factors that need to be considered when determining mud treatment. A detailed workflow of experiments using equipment from OFITE HPHT Fluid Apparatus with differential pressure of 500 psi under 230°F with 2.5" filter paper (30 minutes) as well as OFITE Permeable Plugging Tester with 1,200 psi differential pressure @ 230°F using a ceramic disc were conducted. Also tests were conducted using the Low Temperature-Low Pressure API Filter Press at 100 psi @77°F with 3.5" filter paper for the purpose of comparison
The association between leukocytes and sperm quality is concentration dependent
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>To evaluate the association between leukocytes (polymorphonuclear granulocytes -PMNL) and semen parameters at different leukocyte concentrations.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This was a retrospective clinical study at a university hospital andrology clinic. Semen samples from infertile men were analyzed for sperm morphology and motility according to seminal leukocytes (PMNL) concentration (category A: >0 to <0.25 × 10(6)/mL; category B: >0.25 to <0.5 × 10(6)/mL; category C: >0.5 to <0.75 × 10(6)/mL; category D: >0.75 to <1.0 × 10(6)/mL, category E: >1 × 10(6)/mL).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The percentage of sperm with normal morphology increased significantly from category A (14%) to category D (19%) but decreased in category E to levels (14%) similar to those in category A. Motility grades a and a+b (combined) also increased from category A (12%, 20%) to category D (18.0%, 28.5%) and decreased in category E (11%, 20.5%) to levels similar to those in category A. Sperm deformities and motility grades c and d increased progressively in all categories.</p> <p>Summary</p> <p>Leukocytes had a positive association with normal morphology and progressive motility in semen samples at a concentration of 0-1 × 10(6)/mL. The findings suggest that the association between leukocytes (PMNL) and semen quality might be concentration dependent.</p
Molecular characterization, toxin detection and resistance testing of human clinical Clostridium difficile isolates from Lebanon
Clostridium (Clostridioides) difficile is the main cause for nosocomial diarrhoea in industrialised nations. Epidemiologic data on the pathogen’s occurrence in other world regions are still scarce. In this context we characterized with phenotypic and molecular genetic methods C. difficile isolates stemming from hospitalised patients with diarrhoea in Lebanon.
From 129 stool samples of symptomatic patients at a tertiary care University hospital in Lebanon, a total of 107 C. difficile strains were cultivated and underwent ribotyping, toxin gene detection and antibiotic resistance testing.
Ribotype 014 (RT014, 16.8%) predominated, followed by RT002 (9.3%), RT106 (8.4%) and RT070 (6.5%). Binary toxin gene-positive isolates (RT023, RT078 and RT126) were rarely detected and RT027 was absent. Interestingly, within one isolate only the toxin A gene (tcdA) was detected. Multiple-locus variable-number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA) revealed strong strain diversity in most RTs. The isolates were sensitive to metronidazole and vancomycin, and only a small proportion of strains displayed resistance against moxifloxacin, rifampicin, and clarithromycin (5.6%, 1.9%, and 2.8%), respectively.
The data indicate that the genetic strain composition of Lebanese strains differs markedly from the situation seen in Europe and North America. Especially the epidemic RTs seen in the latter regions were almost absent in Lebanon. Interestingly, most strains showed almost no resistance to commonly used antibiotics that are suspected to play a major role in the development of C. difficile infection, despite frequent use of these antibiotics in Lebanon. Thus, the role of antimicrobial resistance as a major driving force for infection development remains uncertain in this area
