    Efficient Active Learning for Image Classification and Segmentation using a Sample Selection and Conditional Generative Adversarial Network

    Training robust deep learning (DL) systems for medical image classification or segmentation is challenging due to limited images covering different disease types and severity. We propose an active learning (AL) framework to select most informative samples and add to the training data. We use conditional generative adversarial networks (cGANs) to generate realistic chest xray images with different disease characteristics by conditioning its generation on a real image sample. Informative samples to add to the training set are identified using a Bayesian neural network. Experiments show our proposed AL framework is able to achieve state of the art performance by using about 35% of the full dataset, thus saving significant time and effort over conventional methods

    Reproductive biology and artificial propagation of chocolate mahseer Neolissocheilus hexagonolepis (Mc Clelland) in Meghalaya, India

    The chocolate mahseer Neolissocheilus hexagonolepis (Mc Clelland) is a commercially important species of mahseer group which needs immediate attention due to its reduced abundance in Meghalaya. This fish is widely recognized as a sport fish by the anglers, as ornamental fish by the hobbyists and also a priced food fish. Fishes were found to mature from May onwards and gravid fishes were available in rivers from July to September. Females were larger in size when compared to males in the same age group. The sex ratio observed was 1 female: 1.26 male. Attainment of first maturity occurred when males were 9+ months and females were 11+ months old. The minimal length and weight at first maturity of female fishes were 17.8 cm and 70 g respectively whereas males attained maturity at an average length of 17.3 cm and weight of 50 g. The Gonado-somatic Index in ripe female was 16.19 and the average fecundity factor was 70.18. The fish was bred successfully in captive condition through stripping. Fertilization percentage of eggs ranged from 80 to 85. Incubation period varied between 81-97 hours and the percentage of hatching was 75-80. Yolk-sac absorption in larvae was complete in 6+ days after hatching. The spawn was stocked in glass aquaria and on an average, 85% survival was recorded after 15 days of rearing when they attained an average length of 2.084 cm and weight of 0.195 g. The fry was subsequently reared in cement cisterns @ 1 no./l and on an average, 92% survival was recorded after 60 days of rearing. During this period, the fish attained an average length of 4.82 cm and weight of 0.856 g

    The paradox of supplier development in technology-based luxury supply chains

    PurposeThis paper aims to examine how collaborative supplier development (SD) activities, supplier capabilities and buyer-supplier relationship interrelate in technology-based, luxury product business contexts characterized by small volumes, difficult targets and resource constraints relative to those targets.Design/methodology/approachUsing inductive case research method, the authors investigate multiple embedded cases involving six dyadic buyer-supplier relationships of two luxury product manufacturers in the motorcycle and automotive industries. Each dyad represents an important sub-system for which the buying firm committed significant SD efforts to help the supplier successfully achieve difficult targets.FindingsThe analysis reveals how paradoxical tensions might emerge as the firms engage in successful SD activities, which could lead to decreasing relationship commitment ultimately resulting in the termination of the relationship. The authors utilize the "value co-creation and value capture" paradox framework to understand the SD and relationship dynamic and characterize it as developing-leveraging paradox to explain its dualities, i.e. commitment-based SD efforts (increasing value co-creation), and unilateral leveraging of the newly acquired capabilities (increasing value capture) by both the buyer and the supplier. Overemphasis on value capture by one of the exchange partners spurs a detrimental vicious cycle leading to the decline of the relationship.Research limitations/implicationsThe study explains the paradoxical dynamics that may emerge in SD activities of innovative, technologically complex, luxury product firms. The findings contribute to the SD literature by highlighting how learnings from SD activities could contribute to the dark sides of buyer-supplier relationship. The technologically complex, luxury product contextual characteristics of the study may limit the generalizability of the study findings.Originality/valueThe study provides novel insights into the emergence and management of paradoxes in buyer-supplier relationships, in terms of virtuous and vicious dynamics of developing-leveraging

    Expectation of forward-backward rapidity correlations in p+pp+p collisions at the LHC energies

    Forward-backward correlation strength (bb) as a function of pesudorapidity intervals for experimental data from p+pˉp+\bar{p} non-singly diffractive collisions are compared to PYTHIA and PHOJET model calculations. The correlations are discussed as a function of rapidity window (Δη\Delta \eta) symmetric about the central rapidity as well as rapidity window separated by a gap (ηgap\eta_{gap}) between forward and backward regions. While the correlations are observed to be independent of Δη\Delta \eta, it is found to decrease with increase in ηgap\eta_{gap}. This reflects the role of short range correlations and justifies the use of ηgap\eta_{gap} to obtain the accurate information about the physics of interest, the long range correlations. The experimental bb value shows a linear dependence on lns\ln \sqrt{s} with the maximum value of unity being reached at s\sqrt{s} = 16 TeV, beyond the top LHC energy. However calculations from the PYTHIA and PHOJET models indicate a deviation from linear dependence on lns\ln \sqrt{s} and saturation in the bb values being reached beyond s\sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV. Such a saturation in correlation values could have interesting physical interpretations related to clan structures in particle production. Strong forward-backward correlations are associated with cluster production in the collisions. The average number of charged particles to which the clusters fragments, called the cluster size, are found to also increase linearly with lns\ln \sqrt{s} for both data and the models studied. The rate of increase in cluster size vs. lns\ln \sqrt{s} from models studied are larger compared to those from the data and higher for PHOJET compared to PYTHIA. Our study indicates that the forward-backward measurements will provide a clear distinguishing observable for the models studied at LHC energies.Comment: 15 pages, 14 Figures, accepted for publication in International Journal of Modern Physics

    UCLA/INFN-LNF/Univ. Rome has been developing the hybrid gun which has an RF gun and a short linac for velocity bunching in one structure. After the cavity was manufactured at INFN-LNF in 2012, tests of the gun was carried out at UCLA. The field in the standing wave part was 20 % smaller than the simulation but the phase advance was fine. The cavity was commissioned successfully up to 13 MW.     Characterisation and Liberation of Graphite Schist

    This paper deals with the characterisation and liberation studies of graphite schist from Shivaganga, Tamilnadu. The graphite flakes are interbanded with quartz and calcite. Secondary calcite veins often traverses graphite flakes and quartz grains. Based on grain counting, frequency curves , comminution followed by flotation tests , the liberation size of graphite is estimated between 150to 90 microns. Therougher concentrate achieved at d&, passing of 145 micron size product contain 35 % FC with 99% recovery.The SFM study reveals the presence of minute inclusions of calcite and quartz within graphite flakes
