Modeling Epidemic Spread in Synthetic Populations - Virtual Plagues in Massively Multiplayer Online Games
A virtual plague is a process in which a behavior-affecting property spreads
among characters in a Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG). The MMOG
individuals constitute a synthetic population, and the game can be seen as a
form of interactive executable model for studying disease spread, albeit of a
very special kind. To a game developer maintaining an MMOG, recognizing,
monitoring, and ultimately controlling a virtual plague is important,
regardless of how it was initiated. The prospect of using tools, methods and
theory from the field of epidemiology to do this seems natural and appealing.
We will address the feasibility of such a prospect, first by considering some
basic measures used in epidemiology, then by pointing out the differences
between real world epidemics and virtual plagues. We also suggest directions
for MMOG developer control through epidemiological modeling. Our aim is
understanding the properties of virtual plagues, rather than trying to
eliminate them or mitigate their effects, as would be in the case of real

Quasiperiodic localized oscillating solutions in the discrete nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with alternating on-site potential
We present what we believe to be the first known example of an exact
quasiperiodic localized stable solution with spatially symmetric
large-amplitude oscillations in a non-integrable Hamiltonian lattice model. The
model is a one-dimensional discrete nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with
alternating on-site energies, modelling e.g. an array of optical waveguides
with alternating widths. The solution bifurcates from a stationary discrete gap
soliton, and in a regime of large oscillations its intensity oscillates
periodically between having one peak at the central site, and two symmetric
peaks at the neighboring sites with a dip in the middle. Such solutions, termed
'pulsons', are found to exist in continuous families ranging arbitrarily close
both to the anticontinuous and continuous limits. Furthermore, it is shown that

Significant elastic anisotropy in TiAlN alloys
Strong compositional-dependent elastic properties have been observed
theoretically and experimentally in TiAl N alloys. The elastic
constant, C, changes by more than 50% depending on the Al-content.
Increasing the Al-content weakens the average bond strength in the local
octahedral arrangements resulting in a more compliant material. On the other
hand, it enhances the directional (covalent) nature of the nearest neighbor
bonds that results in greater elastic anisotropy and higher sound velocities.
The strong dependence of the elastic properties on the Al-content offers new
insight into the detailed understanding of the spinodal decomposition and age
hardening in TiAlN alloys.Comment: 3 figures, 3 page
Undetectable High-Sensitivity Cardiac Troponin T Level in the Emergency Department and Risk of Myocardial Infarction
ObjectivesThis study sought to evaluate if an undetectable (<5 ng/l) high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) level and an electrocardiogram (ECG) without signs of ischemia can rule out myocardial infarction (MI) in the emergency department (ED).BackgroundChest pain is a common symptom often associated with benign conditions, but may be a sign of MI. Because there is no rapid way to rule out MI, many patients are admitted to the hospital.MethodsAll patients who sought medical attention for chest pain and had at least 1 hs-cTnT analyzed during 2 years at the Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden, were included. We calculated the negative predictive values of an undetectable hs-cTnT and ECG without ischemia for MI and death within 30 days.ResultsWe included 14,636 patients, of whom 8,907 (61%) had an initial hs-cTnT of <5 ng/l; 21% had 5 to 14 ng/l, and 18% had >14 ng/l. During 30-day follow-up, 39 (0.44%) patients with undetectable hs-cTnT had a MI, of whom 15 (0.17%) had no ischemic ECG changes. The negative predictive value for MI within 30 days in patients with undetectable hs-cTnT and no ischemic ECG changes was 99.8% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 99.7 to 99.9). The negative predictive value for death was 100% (95% CI: 99.9 to 100).ConclusionsAll patients with chest pain who have an initial hs-cTnT level of <5 ng/l and no signs of ischemia on an ECG have a minimal risk of MI or death within 30 days, and can be safely discharged directly from the ED
Discrete soliton mobility in two-dimensional waveguide arrays with saturable nonlinearity
We address the issue of mobility of localized modes in two-dimensional
nonlinear Schr\"odinger lattices with saturable nonlinearity. This describes
e.g. discrete spatial solitons in a tight-binding approximation of
two-dimensional optical waveguide arrays made from photorefractive crystals. We
discuss numerically obtained exact stationary solutions and their stability,
focussing on three different solution families with peaks at one, two, and four
neighboring sites, respectively. When varying the power, there is a repeated
exchange of stability between these three solutions, with symmetry-broken
families of connecting intermediate stationary solutions appearing at the
bifurcation points. When the nonlinearity parameter is not too large, we
observe good mobility, and a well defined Peierls-Nabarro barrier measuring the
minimum energy necessary for rendering a stable stationary solution mobile.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figure
Enhanced thermal stability and fracture toughness of TiAlN coatings by Cr, Nb and V-alloying
The effect of metal alloying on mechanical properties including hardness and fracture toughness were investigated in three alloys, Ti~0.33Al0.50(Me)~0.17N (Me¿=¿Cr, Nb and V), and compared to Ti0.50Al0.50N, in the as-deposited state and after annealing. All studied alloys display similar as-deposited hardness while the hardness evolution during annealing is found to be connected to phase transformations, related to the alloy's thermal stability. The most pronounced hardening was observed in Ti0.50Al0.50N, while all the coatings with additional metal elements sustain their hardness better and they are harder than Ti0.50Al0.50N after annealing at 1100¿°C. Fracture toughness properties were extracted from scratch tests. In all tested conditions, as-deposited and annealed at 900 and 1100¿°C, Ti0.33Al0.50Nb0.17N show the least surface and sub-surface damage when scratched despite the differences in decomposition behavior and h-AlN formation. Theoretically estimated ductility of phases existing in the coatings correlates well with their crack resistance. In summary, Ti0.33Al0.50Nb0.17N is the toughest alloy in both as-deposited and post-annealed states.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Oscillatory Instabilities of Standing Waves in One-Dimensional Nonlinear Lattices
In one-dimensional anharmonic lattices, we construct nonlinear standing waves
(SWs) reducing to harmonic SWs at small amplitude. For SWs with spatial
periodicity incommensurate with the lattice period, a transition by breaking of
analyticity versus wave amplitude is observed. As a consequence of the
discreteness, oscillatory linear instabilities, persisting for arbitrarily
small amplitude in infinite lattices, appear for all wave numbers Q not equal
to zero or \pi. Incommensurate analytic SWs with |Q|>\pi/2 may however appear

Does the Supreme Court Follow the Economic Returns? A Response to A Macrotheory of the Court
Today, there is a widespread idea that parents need to learn how to carry out their roles as parents. Practices of parental learning operate throughout society. This article deals with one particular practice of parental learning, namely nanny TV, and the way in which ideal parents are constructed through such programmes. The point of departure is SOS family, a series broadcast on Swedish television in 2008. Proceeding from the theorising of governmentality developed in the wake of the work of Michel Foucault, we analyse the parental ideals conveyed in the series, as an example of the way parents are constituted as subjects in the ‘advanced liberal society’ of today. The ideal parent is a subject who, guided by the coach, is constantly endeavouring to achieve a makeover. The objective of this endeavour, however, is self-control, whereby the parents will in the end become their own coaches.
