Helical structures from an isotropic homopolymer model
We present Monte Carlo simulation results for square-well homopolymers at a
series of bond lengths. Although the model contains only isotropic pairwise
interactions, under appropriate conditions this system shows spontaneous chiral
symmetry breaking, where the chain exists in either a left- or a right-handed
helical structure. We investigate how this behavior depends upon the ratio
between bond length and monomer radius.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication by Physical Review

Failure of interpolation in the intuitionistic logic of constant domains
This paper shows that the interpolation theorem fails in the intuitionistic
logic of constant domains. This result refutes two previously published claims
that the interpolation property holds.Comment: 13 pages, 0 figures. Overlaps with arXiv 1202.1195 removed, the text

Physiological Basis of the Radioisotope Renogram
A model elucidating the relationships between blood radioactivity, the renogram curve, and urine radioactivity, as a function of time, is derived. Estimation procedures have been devised which use the data from three curves at once to estimate parameters common to the three curves, and which also estimate parameters unique to the individual curves. A program has been written for the RPC 4000 computer to perform the estimation. It was found that some model in which six different exponential parameters could be justified instead of the two proposed by the model could provide a significantly better fit of the data (P \u3c .001), but that the fit under the hypothesis was still quite good

Precision Measurement of the Beam-Normal Single-Spin Asymmetry in Forward-Angle Elastic Electron-Proton Scattering
A beam-normal single-spin asymmetry generated in the scattering of transversely polarized electrons from unpolarized nucleons is an observable related to the imaginary part of the two-photon exchange process. We report a 2% precision measurement of the beam-normal single-spin asymmetry in elastic electron-proton scattering with a mean scattering angle of theta_lab = 7.9 degrees and a mean energy of 1.149 GeV. The asymmetry result is B_n = -5.194 +- 0.067 (stat) +- 0.082 (syst) ppm. This is the most precise measurement of this quantity available to date and therefore provides a stringent test of two-photon exchange models at far-forward scattering angles (theta_lab -\u3e 0) where they should be most reliable
Structural signatures of igneous sheet intrusion propagation
The geometry and distribution of planar igneous bodies (i.e. sheet intrusions), such as dykes, sills, and inclined sheets, has long been used to determine emplacement mechanics, define melt source locations, and reconstruct palaeostress conditions to shed light on various tectonic and magmatic processes. Since the 1970’s we have recognised that sheet intrusions do not necessarily display a continuous, planar geometry, but commonly consist of segments.
The morphology of these segments and their connectors is controlled by, and provide insights into, the behaviour of the host rock during emplacement. For example, tensile brittle fracturing leads to the formation of intrusive steps or bridge structures between adjacent segments. In contrast, brittle shear faulting, cataclastic and ductile flow processes, as well as heat-induced viscous flow or fluidization, promotes magma finger development. Textural indicators of magma flow (e.g., rock fabrics) reveal that segments are aligned parallel to the initial sheet propagation direction. Recognising and mapping segment long axes thus allows melt source location hypotheses, derived from sheet distribution and orientation, to be robustly tested. Despite the information that can be obtained from these structural signatures of sheet intrusion propagation, they are largely overlooked by the structural and volcanological communities. To highlight their utility, we briefly review the formation of sheet intrusion segments, discuss how they inform interpretations of magma emplacement, and outline future research directions.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse
On the possibility of magneto-structural correlations: detailed studies of di-nickel carboxylate complexes
A series of water-bridged dinickel complexes of the general formula [Ni2(μ2-OH2)(μ2-
O2CtBu)2(O2CtBu)2(L)(L0)] (L = HO2CtBu, L0 = HO2CtBu (1), pyridine (2),
3-methylpyridine (4); L = L0 = pyridine (3), 3-methylpyridine (5)) has been synthesized
and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The magnetic properties
have been probed by magnetometry and EPR spectroscopy, and detailed measurements
show that the axial zero-field splitting, D, of the nickel(ii) ions is on the same order as
the isotropic exchange interaction, J, between the nickel sites. The isotropic exchange
interaction can be related to the angle between the nickel centers and the bridging
water molecule, while the magnitude of D can be related to the coordination sphere at
the nickel sites
In Vivo Biotransformation of 3,3′,4,4′-Tetrachlorobiphenyl by Whole Plants−Poplars and Switchgrass
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are widely distributed persistent organic pollutants. In vitro research has shown that plant cell cultures might transform lower chlorinated congeners to hydroxylated PCBs, but there are few studies on in vivo metabolism of PCBs by intact whole plants. In this research, poplar plants (Populus deltoides × nigra, DN34) and switchgrass (Panicum vigratum, Alamo) were hydroponically exposed to 3,3′,4,4′-tetrachlorobiphenyl (CB77). Metabolism in plants occurred rapidly, and metabolites were detected after only a 24 h exposure. Rearrangement of chlorine atoms and dechlorination of CB77 by plants was unexpectedly observed. In addition, poplars were able to hydroxylate CB77 and the metabolite 6-hydroxy-3,3′,4,4′-tetrachlorobiphenyl (6-OH-CB77) was identified and quantified. Hybrid poplar was able to hydroxylate CB77, but switchgrass was not, suggesting that enzymatic transformations are plant specific. Sulfur-containing metabolites (from the action of sulfotransferases) were investigated in this study, but they were not detected in either poplar or switchgrass
