© 2020 by the authors. (1) Background: The Gulf of Aqaba (GoA) supports unique and diverse marine ecosystems. It is one of the highest anthropogenically impacted coasts in the Middle East region, where rapid human activities are likely to degrade these naturally diverse but stressed ecosystems. (2) Methods: Various water quality parameters were measured to assess the current status and conditions of GoA seawater including pH, total dissolved solids (TDS), total alkalinity (TA), Cl-, NO3-, SO42-, PO43-, NH4+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, Sr, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, and Zn. (3) Results: The pH values indicated basic coastal waters. The elevated levels of TDS with an average of about 42 g/L indicated highly saline conditions. Relatively low levels of inorganic nutrients were observed consistent with the prevalence of oligotrophic conditions in GoA seawater. The concentrations of Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, Sr, Cl-, and SO42- in surface layer varied spatially from about 423-487, 2246-2356, 9542-12,647, 513-713, 9.2-10.4, 22,173-25,992, and 317-407 mg/L, respectively. The average levels of Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn ranged from 0.51, 0.38, 1.44, 1.29, 0.88, 0.38, and 6.05 μg/L, respectively. (4) Conclusions: The prevailing saline conditions of high temperatures, high evaporation rates, the water stratification and intense dust storms are major contributing factors to the observed seawater chemistry. The surface distribution of water quality variables showed spatial variations with no specific patterns, except for metal contents which exhibited southward increasing trends, closed to the industrial complex. The vast majority of these quality parameters showed relatively higher values compared to those of other regions

Effect of Using New Technology Vehicles on the World’s Environment and Petroleum Resources

Nowadays the trend toward the use of transportation technologies which are clean and less dependent on fossil fuel is highly increased. That is because of the fast depletion of oil reserves in the world, on the other hand the growth of developing nations into industrialized one’s will increase the demand on the energy sector , in which transportation occupy a large percent of it. This increase of transportation sector will affect the environment as a result of greenhouse gases. In this paper the use of several types of clean energy vehicles is demonstrated compared with classical internal combustion engine one’s, with statistical demonstration and the energy conversion chain, also the impact of hybrid vehicles on the petroleum reserves and consumption rates will be discussed using some mathematical equations

Correlation between speaker gender and perceptual quality of mobile speech signal

Perceptual evaluation of speech signals is a very crucial measure for quality of service in mobile speech communication. Several subjective and objective quality measures are being utilized to evaluate the perceptual quality of speech signals. Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality (PESQ)has been found to reliably predict the quality of processed speech signals with a higher correlation with the perceived quality. However, some studied have shown some issues with PESQ measure in specific environments or speech signals. This paper investigates the effect of speaker gender on PESQ measure of the perceptual quality of GSM Full Rate (GSM-FR) encoded speech signals. A Matlab experiment is carried out to encode 350 speech files from TIMIT corpus using GSM-FR vocoder and calculate the PESQ scores. The results clearly show that there is a significant difference in perceptual quality score between female and male speech signals which demonstrate another reliability issue of PESQ as a perceptual quality of speech signal in mobile communications

Global Incidence and Risk Factors Associated With Postoperative Urinary Retention Following Elective Inguinal Hernia Repair

Importance Postoperative urinary retention (POUR) is a well-recognized complication of inguinal hernia repair (IHR). A variable incidence of POUR has previously been reported in this context, and contradictory evidence surrounds potential risk factors. Objective To ascertain the incidence of, explore risk factors for, and determine the health service outcomes of POUR following elective IHR.Design, Setting, and Participants The Retention of Urine After Inguinal Hernia Elective Repair (RETAINER I) study, an international, prospective cohort study, recruited participants between March 1 and October 31, 2021. This study was conducted across 209 centers in 32 countries in a consecutive sample of adult patients undergoing elective IHR.Exposure Open or minimally invasive IHR by any surgical technique, under local, neuraxial regional, or general anesthesia.Main Outcomes and Measures The primary outcome was the incidence of POUR following elective IHR. Secondary outcomes were perioperative risk factors, management, clinical consequences, and health service outcomes of POUR. A preoperative International Prostate Symptom Score was measured in male patients. Results In total, 4151 patients (3882 male and 269 female; median [IQR] age, 56 [43-68] years) were studied. Inguinal hernia repair was commenced via an open surgical approach in 82.2% of patients (n = 3414) and minimally invasive surgery in 17.8% (n = 737). The primary form of anesthesia was general in 40.9% of patients (n = 1696), neuraxial regional in 45.8% (n = 1902), and local in 10.7% (n = 446). Postoperative urinary retention occurred in 5.8% of male patients (n = 224), 2.97% of female patients (n = 8), and 9.5% (119 of 1252) of male patients aged 65 years or older. Risk factors for POUR after adjusted analyses included increasing age, anticholinergic medication, history of urinary retention, constipation, out-of-hours surgery, involvement of urinary bladder within the hernia, temporary intraoperative urethral catheterization, and increasing operative duration. Postoperative urinary retention was the primary reason for 27.8% of unplanned day-case surgery admissions (n = 74) and 51.8% of 30-day readmissions (n = 72).Conclusions The findings of this cohort study suggest that 1 in 17 male patients, 1 in 11 male patients aged 65 years or older, and 1 in 34 female patients may develop POUR following IHR. These findings could inform preoperative patient counseling. In addition, awareness of modifiable risk factors may help to identify patients at increased risk of POUR who may benefit from perioperative risk mitigation strategies
