DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS FOR DIGITAL IMAGE LIBRARIES
Design of digital image libraries requires choices for numerous configuration aspects, such as resolution and display settings. These aspects can be categorized into different types of design criteria based on whether they are a human viewing and usage factor, or a stage in the image library management process. The criteria can also be applied in a hierarchy of nested versions of access to the library to suit different usage circumstances. Here we present a framework for design criteria using this approach, and apply it to some example cases

The Potential for Machine Learning Analysis over Encrypted Data in Cloud-based Clinical Decision Support - Background and Review

This relies on the fact that some encryption algorithms display the property of homomorphism, which allows them to manipulate data in a meaningful way while still in encrypted form. Such a framework would find particular relevance in Clinical Decision Support (CDS) applications deployed in the public cloud. CDS applications have an important computational and analytical role over confidential healthcare information with the aim of supporting decision-making in clinical practice. This review paper examines the history and current status of homomoprhic encryption and its potential for preserving the privacy of patient data underpinning cloud-based CDS applications
A conceptual framework for secure mobile health
Mobile health is characterised by its diversity of applicability, in a multifaceted and multidisciplinary healthcare delivery continuum. In an environment of rapid change with the increasing development of mobile health, issues related to security and privacy must be well thought out. The different competing tensions in the development of mobile health from the device technologies and associated regulation, to clinical workflow and patient acceptance, require a framework for security that reflects the complex structure of this emerging field. There are three distinct associated elements that require investigation: technology, clinical, and human factors. Each of these elements consists of multiple aspects and there are specific risk factors to be addressed successively and co-dependently in each case. The fundamental approach to defining a conceptual framework for secure use of mobile health requires systematic identification of properties for the tensions and critical factors which impact these elements. The resulting conceptual framework presented here can be used for new critique, augmentation or deployment of mobile health solutions from the perspective of data protection and security

Monitoring falls in elderly people: Lessons from a community-based project

fall-detection project using smart phone based tri-axial accelerometry to identify
factors that affect adoption and use of such technology by elderly people. Methods.
A mixed methods study using questionnaires and semi-structured interviews was
conducted to evaluate attitudes of the elderly people participating, as well as
project stakeholders involved in the project. Information registered in a web-based
fall management system was analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively, using
an adapted version of Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology
(UTAUT). Results. Adoption rate was 61.7% and attrition rate was 57%, the most
common reasons for attrition being health deterioration (50%) and problems with
the device and the network (26.2%). Conclusion. We identified a number of
challenges that affected the success of this project, including problems with the

The project relied on collaboration of three parties to achieve its clinical, research and technology aims. The results of data collection during the six month trial period are presented and analysed here. These results indicate a very high rate of false positives (94.7%) which would need to be addressed in future development of the system
A Near-Infrared Survey of the Inner Galactic Plane for Wolf-Rayet Stars I. Methods and First Results: 41 New WR Stars
The discovery of new Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars in our Galaxy via large-scale
narrowband optical surveys has been severely limited by dust extinction. Recent
improvements in infrared technology have made narrowband-broadband imaging
surveys viable again. We report a new J, K and narrow-band imaging survey of
300 square degrees of the plane of the Galaxy, spanning 150 degrees in Galactic
longitude and reaching 1 degree above and below the Galactic plane. The survey
has a useful limiting magnitude of K = 15 over most of the observed Galactic
plane, and K = 14 within a few degrees of the Galactic center. Thousands of
emission line candidates have been detected. In spectrographic follow-ups of
173 WR star candidates we have discovered 41 new WR stars, 15 of type WN and 26
of type WC. Star subtype assignments have been confirmed with K band spectra,
and distances approximated using the method of spectroscopic parallax. A few of
the new WR stars are amongst the most distant known in our Galaxy. The
distribution of these new WR stars is seen to follow that of previously known
WR stars along the spiral arms of the Galaxy. Tentative radial velocities were

Effectiveness of a web- and mobile phone-based intervention to promote physical activity and healthy eating in middle-Aged males: Randomized controlled trial of the manup study
Background: The high number of adult males engaging in low levels of physical activity and poor dietary practices, and the health risks posed by these behaviours, necessitate broad-reaching intervention strategies. IT-based (web and mobile phone) interventions can be accessed by large numbers of people, yet there are few reported IT-based interventions targeting males’ physical activity and dietary practices.
Objective: This study examines the effectiveness of a 9-month IT-based intervention to improve the physical activity, dietary behaviours and health literacy in middle-aged males compared to a print-based intervention.
Methods: Participants, recruited offline (e.g. newspaper ads), were randomized into either an IT-based or print-based intervention arm on a 2:1 basis in favour of the fully automated IT-based arm. Participants were adult males aged 35-54 years living in two regional cities in Queensland Australia who could access the internet, owned a mobile phone and were able to increase their activity level. The intervention, ManUp, was informed by social cognitive and self regulation theories and was specifically designed to target males. Educational materials were provided and self-monitoring of physical activity and nutrition behaviours was promoted. Intervention content was the same in both intervention arms, only the delivery mode differed, and content could be accessed throughout the 9-month study period. Participants’ physical activity, dietary behaviours, and health literacy were measured using online surveys at baseline, 3 months and 9 months.
Results: A total of 301 participants completed baseline assessments, 205 in the ITbased
arm and 96 in the print-based arm. A total of 124 participants completed all three assessments. There were no significant between group differences in physical 5 activity and dietary behaviours (p ≥0.05). Participants reported an increased number of minutes and sessions of physical activity at 3 months (b(exp)=1.45, 95% CI=1.09-1.95; b(exp)=1.61, 95% CI=1.17-2.22) and 9 months (b(exp)=1.55, 95% CI=1.14-2.10; b(exp)=1.51, 95% CI=1.15-2.00). Overall dietary behaviours improved at 3 months (b(exp)=1.07, 95% CI=1.03-1.11) and 9 months (b(exp)=1.10, 95% CI=1.05-1.13). The proportion of participants in both groups eating higher-fibre bread and low-fat milk increased at 3 months (b(exp) = 2.25, 95% CI = 1.29-3.92; b(exp)=1.65, 95% CI = 1.07-2.55). Participants in the IT-based arm were less likely to report that 30 minutes of physical activity per day improves health (b(exp)=0.48, 95% CI=0.26-0.90) and more likely to report that vigorous intensity physical activity 3 times per week is essential (b(exp)=1.70, 95% CI=1.02-2.82). The average number of logins to the IT-platform at 3 and 9 months was 6.99 (SE=0.86) and 9.22 (SE=1.47), respectively. The average number of self-monitoring entries at 3 and 9 months was 16.69 (SE=2.38) and 22.51 (SE=3.79), respectively.
Conclusions: The ManUp intervention was effective in improving physical activity and dietary behaviours in middle aged males with no significant differences between IT- and print-based delivery modes
An Extreme Case of a Misaligned Highly Flattened Wind in the Wolf-Rayet Binary CX Cephei
CX Cep (WR 151) is the WR+O binary (WN5+O5V) with the second shortest period
known in our Galaxy. To examine the circumstellar matter distribution and to
better constraint the orbital parameters and mass-loss rate of the WR star, we
obtained broadband and multi-band (i.e. UBVRI) linear polarization observations
of the system. Our analysis of the phase-locked polarimetric modulation
confirms the high orbital inclination of the system (i.e. ). Using the
orbital solution of Lewis et al. (1993) we obtain masses of
and for the O and WR stars respectively, which agree with
their spectral types. A simple polarimetric model accounting for finite stellar
size effects allowed us to derive a mass-loss rate for the WR star of
. This result was remarkably independent of
the model's input parameters and favors an earlier spectral type for the WR
component (i.e. WN4). Finally, using our multi-band observations, we fitted and
subtracted from our data the interstellar polarization. The resulting constant
intrinsic polarization of is misaligned in relation to the orbital plane
(i.e. vs. ) and is the highest intrinsic
polarization ever observed for a WR star. This misalignment points towards a
rotational (or magnetic) origin for the asymmetry and contradicts the most
recent evolutionary models for massive stars (Meynet & Maeder 2003) which
