A experiência norte-americana com o seguro agrÃcola: lições ao Brasil?
Agricultural insurance is considered to be an effective to manage rural risks. Surprisingly, its adoption by farmers is very limited all over the world. An outstanding exception is the United States of America, country in which this instrument has achieved remarkable success. Nevertheless, the process of diffusion of agricultural insurance in the USA was slow and expensive. It has also required significant government intervention through a variety of complementary actions. In this context, countries willing to introduce this instrument among other agricultural policy tools, as it seems the case of Brazil, should proceed with caution. Agricultural insurance success has important pre-requisites and its general diffusion may amplify its problems. The analysis of the North American experience provides worthwhile lessons.rural risk management, agricultural insurance, North American agricultural policies., Agribusiness, Q18, Q12,
Ten years of ElPub : an analysis of its major trends
Electronic publishing constitutes one of the hottest topics discussed amongst researchers from a variety of disciplines since the seminal work by Harnad, in the 1980's, “The scholarly skywriting”, when its potentialities started to challenge the well-established business model of commercial publishers. It was certainly in this context that the first ElPub thinkers initiated the conference. In fact, the International Conference on Electronic Publishing (ElPub) is the realisation of an idea that was brought into reality in 1997 by a group of librarians, including the most persistent ElPubers Peter Linde and John Smith. In its very beginning, ElPub only comprised
the presentation of papers. In 1999, there were two panel debates whose speakers were invited to participate and received grants from the conference for that. Over the subsequent years, ElPub has gradually incorporated
features of greater, well-established international conferences. Especially since 2003, a variety of sessions started to be part of the conference programme, annually organised in two tracks, namely general and technical. Those sessions comprise: special sessions focusing on a specific topic and sponsored by a specific organisation, workshops - mostly on technical aspects of electronic publishing -, posters and demonstrations. A gradual increasing variety of topics has also been defined in the Call for Papers of the conference, as constituents of the
topic. Since then, ElPub has covered a number of interesting topics, presented by people from ca. 44 countries so far

Isolated traumatic dislocation of the cuboid
The cuboid bone stabilizes the lateral column of the foot. It articulates with the midtarsal and tarsometatarsal joints and this anatomically proportionates marked stability to the cuboid. Isolated dislocations of the cuboid a rare ocurrence. The authors present a rare case of an isolated traumatic dislocation of the cuboid bone without fracture and present a short review of the pertinent literature
New insights on the occurrence of peperites and sedimentary deposits within the silicic volcanic sequences of the Parana Magmatic Province, Brazil
The PMP (Parana Magmatic Province) is characterized by lava flows of the Early Cretaceous Serra Geral Formation which covers about 75% of the Parana Basin (southern and southeastern Brazil), composed of a thick (up to 1600 m) volcanic sequence formed by a succession of petrographically and geochemically distinct units of basic and silicic composition. the whole package must have been emplaced during approximately 3 million years of nearly uninterrupted activity. A few aeolian sandstone layers, indicating arid environmental conditions (the Botucatu Formation), are interlayered in the lower basalts. Above the basalts, the Palmas and Chapeco Members are composed of silicic volcanic rocks (quartz latites, dacites, rhyodacites and rhyolites) and basalts. This paper presents new evidence of sedimentation episodes separating silicic volcanic events, expressed by the occurrence of sedimentary deposits. Interaction between the volcanic bodies and the coeval unconsolidated sediments formed peperites. the sediments were observed between basaltic lava flows and silicic rocks or interlayered in the Palmas-type rocks, between the Chapeco-type rocks and overlying basaltic flows, between silicic bodies of the Palmas and Chapeco types, and interlayered within Palmas-type units. the observed structures indicate that the sediments were still wet and unconsolidated, or weakly consolidated, at the time of volcanism, which, coupled with the sediment features, reflect environmental conditions that are different from those characterizing the Botucatu arid conditions.Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Univ Estadual Paulista, Inst Geociencias & Ciencias Exatas, BR-13506900 Rio Claro, SP, BrazilUniversidade Federal de São Paulo, Dept Ciencias Exatas & Terra, BR-09920540 São Paulo, BrazilUniv Lisbon, Inst Dom Luiz, Fac Ciencias GeoFCUL, Dept Geol, P-1699 Lisbon, PortugalUniv Nacl Salta, Fac Ciencias Nat, Inst Geonorte, Salta, ArgentinaUniversidade Federal de São Paulo, Dept Ciencias Exatas & Terra, BR-09920540 São Paulo, BrazilWeb of Scienc
