Parallel Nonnegative Matrix Factorization Algorithms for Hyperspectral Images

Hyperspectral imaging is a branch of remote sensing which deals with creating and processing aerial or satellite pictures that capture wide range of wavelengths, most of which are invisible to the naked eye. Hyperspectral images are composed of many bands, each corresponding to certain light frequencies. Because of their complex nature, image processing tasks such as feature extraction can be resource and time consuming. There are many unsupervised extraction methods available. A recently investigated one is Nonnegative Matrix Factorization (NMF), a method that given positive linear matrix of positive sources, attempts to recover them. In this thesis we designed, implemented and tested parallel versions of two popular iterative NMF algorithms: one based on multiplicative updates, and another on alternative gradient computation. Our algorithms are designed to leverage the multi-processor SMP architecture and power of threading to evenly distribute the workload among the available CPU’s and improve the performance as compared to their sequential counterparts. This work could be used as a basis for creating even more powerful distributed algorithms that would work on clustered architectures. The experiments show a speedup in both algorithms without reduction in accuracy. In addition, we have also developed a java based framework offering reading and writing tools for various hyperspectral image types, as well as visualization tools, and a graphical user interface to launch and control the factorization processes

Celem artykułu jest analiza obrazu kaszubskiego katolicyzmu w reportażu Stasi Budzisz Welewetka. Jak znikają Kaszuby. W książce przyjmującej formę reportażowej biografii rodzinnej autorka podejmuje próbę nowego spojrzenia na dziedzictwo kulturowe i tożsamość kaszubską. Opowieść o niełatwym procesie przyswajania przez reporterkę kaszubskich tradycji staje się dla niej okazją do krytycznego spojrzenia na kondycję regionu i jego dziedzictwo kulturowe. Z tego powodu Welewetka traktowana być może jako reporterska polemika z regionalnym etosem kulturowym. Szczególnie wyraźnej krytyce poddaje Budzisz kaszubski katolicyzm. Na kartach książki jawi się on jako wewnętrznie niespójny, negatywnie wpływający na lokalne stosunki społeczne oraz osłabiający odrębność kulturową Kaszub. Widziany przez pryzmat reportażu katolicyzm może być pojmowany jako czynnik wypaczający obraz regionalnej kultury. Literacka narracja pozwala ponadto stwierdzić, że nadmierna społeczna nobilitacja katolicyzmu przyczynia się do kreowania wyidealizowanego, a przez to w pewnym sensie fikcyjnego obrazu mieszkańców regionu

[email protected] Abstrakt: V tejto práci sa zameriame na lokálne polynomiálne vyhadovanie neznámej regresnej funkcie, pričom zároveň sa budeme snažiť zapracovať do odhadovacích postupov určitú mieru robustnosti a to špeciálne vzhľadom k odľahlým pozorovaniam a tiež rozdeleniam náhodných chýb, ktoré sa vyznačujú ťažkými chvostami. Zamierame našu pozornosť na tzv. lokálne polynomiálne M-vyhladovače (M-smoothers) a odvodíme ich základné štatistické vlastnosti. Ďalšia zásadná vlastnosť s ktorou budeme pracovať, je nespojitosť, prípadne nehladkosť (teda nespojitosť derivácii) neznámej regresnej funkcie. Zaoberať sa budeme niektorými druhmi modelov, špeciálne modelom s homoskedastickou a heteroskedastickou štruktúrou variability a to pre prípad nezávislých, ako aj závislých pozorovaní. Nespojitosti v modeli budeme riešiť prostredníctvom štatistických testov, pre ktoré navrhneme konkrétne postupy a budeme tiež vyšetrovať ich základné štatistické vlastnosti. [email protected] Abstract: In this thesis we focus on local polynomial estimation approaches of an unknown regression function while taking into account also some robust issues like a presence of outlying observa- tions or heavy-tailed distributions of random errors as well. We will discuss the most common method used for such settings, so called local polynomial M-smoothers and we will present the main statistical properties and asymptotic inference for this method. The M-smoothers method is especially suitable for such cases because of its natural robust flavour, which can nicely deal with outliers as well as heavy-tailed distributed random errors. An unwanted reality? : rebellion as a mechanism for shaping provincial mentality in Beata Szady's reportage "Wieczny początek. Warmia i Mazury"

The aim of the article is to analyze the image of provincial mentality seen through the prism of Beata Szady's reportage "Wieczny początek. Warmia i Mazury". The background of the story about changing the indigenous inhabitants fate is new provincial Poland that is evolving after World War II. The analysis of the reportage contained in the article makes it possible to distinguish the special role of the attitude of rebellion as a collective reaction mechanism to the social and cultural changes which take place in the borderland. Under the circumstances of rebellion, the essential features of the provincial mentality are crystallized. Its shape is the result of specific experiences, and as such it is often not without basis. At the same time, however, the impact of this mentality on social relations can be destructive. It results with the expansion of borderline negative phenomena such as violence, poverty and alcoholism. However, not only the inhabitants of the region are to blame for this state but also centers of power which are neglecting the borderland
