Creatine supplementation on cognitive performance following exercise in female Muay Thai athletes

BACKGROUND: Creatine supplementation has some beneficial effects on cognitive processing in healthy adults, including athletes; however the effects on cognitive function following exhaustive exercise in athletes is unknown. Therefore, the purpose was to determine the effects of 28 days of creatine supplementation on tasks of cognitive performance immediately following exhaustive exercise in Muay Thai female athletes compared to placebo. METHODS: Using a repeated measures, double-blind, placebo controlled design, 26 female Muay Thai athletes (age: 26 ± 5 years; body mass: 65.1 ± 6.6 kg; height: 162 ± 5 cm; training experience: 2.6 ± 0.6 years) were randomized to supplement with creatine monohydrate (3 g/day) or placebo (maltodextrin) for 28 days. Prior to and following supplementation, measures of cognitive performance were assessed (visual and auditory reaction time, corsi block test, visual forward digit span, and Erikson Flanker Task) immediately after exercise. RESULTS: There was a time main effect for auditory reaction time (p = 0.035), with no differences between groups. There was a trend for an interaction effect for visual reaction time (p = 0.067), visual go-no-go reaction time (p = 0.087), and Erikson Flanker task (p = 0.06), with exploratory post hoc tests revealing improvements over time in the creatine group (p \u3c 0.05) with no changes in the PLA group (p \u3e 0.05). CONCLUSION: Twenty-eight days of creatine supplementation appeared to have a small but positive effect on cognitive performance following exhaustive exercise in female Muay Thai athletes. Future research using a larger dose over a longer duration is warranted

Immunotherapy in Allergic Asthma – 5 year analysis: Is it a curative approach?

Asthma is a common, chronic and heterogeneous disease;it affects people of all ages and there has been a recentincrease in its prevalence and severity. It may be mild, barely noticed by the patient, or it may range all the way tovery severe disease, causing constant symptoms that greatlyaffect the quality life of the patient.

    Get PDF

Survival, extinction and approximation of discrete-time branching random walks

We consider a general discrete-time branching random walk on a countable set X. We relate local, strong local and global survival with suitable inequalities involving the first-moment matrix M of the process. In particular we prove that, while the local behavior is characterized by M, the global behavior cannot be completely described in terms of properties involving M alone. Moreover we show that locally surviving branching random walks can be approximated by sequences of spatially confined and stochastically dominated branching random walks which eventually survive locally if the (possibly finite) state space is large enough. An analogous result can be achieved by approximating a branching random walk by a sequence of multitype contact processes and allowing a sufficiently large number of particles per site. We compare these results with the ones obtained in the continuous-time case and we give some examples and counterexamples.Comment: 32 pages, a few misprints have been correcte

Observational evidences of the particle acceleration process in a solar flare

The electrons accelerated in solar flares give rise to X-ray emission through thick and thin bremsstrahlung when interacting with the plasma within the loops. We have made a detailed study of the behaviour of the hard X-ray emission for the Nov. 6 1980, 17:25 U.T. flare so as to identify these processes and get information about the energy release mechanism. The observations are in good agreement with a two component model: a thermal emission superimposed to a non-thermal one produced by a power law spectrum of accelerated electrons.Asociación Argentina de Astronomí
