Mergers and acquisitions : the case of Cimpor and InterCement

    Get PDF
In June of 2012 Camargo Corrêa, the Brazilian Family Group that controlled the Brazilian cement producer InterCement, acquired 61% of the Portuguese cement production leader, Cimpor, with an offer price of 5.5 Euros, allowing Camargo Corrêa to take full control of Cimpor by owning 94% of the company. Cement is an industry characterized by huge production scales and high initial investments, with an enduring trend of consolidation among cement’s biggest international producers, and this deal comes at the tail-end of the 2008 financial crisis, which marked the European macroeconomic environment, particularly the sovereign treasury of the PIGS (Portugal, Ireland, Greece and Spain). According to the model used in this work, Cimpor’s share price at the time of the acquisition announcement is found to be undervalued, with 14.8% upside potential. Moreover, adding the forecasted synergies to the model implies a fair offer price of 6.14 Euros, which results in a 23% premium over Cimpor’s closing price

The development of trust in therapeutic communities and its impact on treatment adherence

    Get PDF
Trust is recognized as an essential element for the establishment of therapeutic relationship and has a major impact on treatment adherence. However, there are few studies and theoretical models which allow its conceptualization and measurement within this context. This research aims to study the development of trust in Therapeutic Communities and its impact on treatment adherence. It was adopted a mixed methodology and 231 subjects spread over nine Therapeutic Communities participated of the study. The results show the existence of two levels of trust (with the technical staff and with the institutions) and present it as a key element for developing therapeutic relationship and treatment adherence

An empirical study on the estimation of size and complexity of software applications with function points analysis

    Get PDF
Empirical studies are important in software engineering to evaluate new tools, techniques, methods and technologies in a structured way before they are introduced in the industrial (real) software process. Perform empirical studies in a real context is very difficult due to various obstacles. An interesting alternative is perform empirical studies in an educational context using students as subjects and share the results with the academia and the industry. This paper describes a case study with two teams that developed a software system (Web application) for a real customer. In this study we used a model based on Function Points Analysis (FPA) to estimate the size and complexity of software system

Effect of crown-to-implant ratio and crown height space on marginal bone stress: a finite element analysis

    Get PDF
Crown-to-implant ratio and crown height space, associated with the use of short implants, have been related with marginal bone loss. However, it is unclear which of the two entities would play the most important role on the bone remodelling process. Using a finite element analysis, the present work aims to help clarifying how those two factors contribute for the stress generation at the marginal bone level. A numerical model (reference model), with a crown-to-implant ratio of 4, was double validated and submitted to a numerical calculation. Then, it was modified in two different ways: (a) by decreasing the prosthetic height obtaining crown-to-implant ratios of 3, 2.5 and 2 and (b) by increasing the implants length obtaining a crown-to-implant ratio of 2.08. The new models were also submitted to numerical calculations.Partial financial support provided by FCT, through INEGI, under LAETA, Project UIDB/50022/2020

Composite pressure vessels for commercial applications

    Get PDF
A new generation of composite pressure vessels for large scale market applications has been studied in this work. The vessels consist on a plastic liner wrapped with a filament winding glass fibre reinforced polymer matrix structure. A polyethylene (PE) was selected as liner for water at room temperatures applications and a thermosetting resin was used as matrices in the glass reinforced filament wound laminate. For applications having higher service temperatures, such as, termal accumulators and solar panel vessels, thermoplastics presenting greater temperature performance, for example, polypropylene (PP), polyamide (PA), polycarbonate (PC) Polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) or even thermosettings are being studied for application as vessel liners.
