Non-suicidal self-injury in Portuguese college students: relationship with emotion regulation, resilience and self-compassion

Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) are behaviors relatively frequent among college students and seem to be associated to difficulties in emotion regulation. Less is known, however, about the relationship of NSSI with protective factors such as resilience and self-compassion. The aims of this study are to compare three groups of Portuguese college students (without NSSI, past NSSI, and current NSSI) regarding difficulties in emotion regulation, resilience, and self-compassion and to evaluate the predictors of NSSI considering demographics and those risk and protective factors. Three hundred and eighty-five college students were evaluated through self-report measures. Ninety participants (23.4%) reported lifetime NSSI. These participants reported higher difficulties in emotion regulation and lower resilience and self-compassion than the group without NSSI. The group with current NSSI presented the lowest levels of resilience and self-compassion. Lifetime NSSI was significantly associated with past suicide attempts. Past psychopathology and lower self-compassion were predictors of NSSI. Interventions for decrease NSSI in college students should promote adaptive emotion regulation strategies, resilience, and self-compassion.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Using the Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment (ASEBA) battery in a non-clinical Portuguese population-based study, we aimed to examine a broad spectrum of emotional and behavioral problems and competencies, including picky eating and overeating behaviors in children and youth. Overall, 2687 children from 6 to 18 years old were evaluated by their parents, teachers and, in the case of children older than 11 years old, by themselves. Picky eating and overeating were assessed using the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and Youth Self Report (YSR). The frequency of picky eating and overeating was 23.1% and 24%, respectively. Picky eaters, compared with over eaters and non-picky/non-over eaters, tended to belong to the younger group of participants, and in turn, over eaters tended to belong to the older group. Overeating was significantly associated with overweight, which also emerged as a predictor of belonging to the overeating group. Both picky eaters and over eaters scored significantly higher on all emotional and behavioral problems and DSM-5-oriented subscales. The results of two independent binary logistic regression analyses indicated that internalizing and externalizing problems, together with the total problems score emerged as a predictor for both groups, including picky eater and overeater school-aged children. In accordance with previous studies, our results also supported the possibility that a broader pattern of potentially non-adaptive emotional and behavioral problems could also be associated with both pickiness and excessive eating.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Coping as a mediator and moderator between psychological distress and disordered eating behaviors and weight changes during the COVID-19 pandemic

Previous research has already shown the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on college students’ well-being and mental health. Eating problems and weight gain due to changes in eating habits and physical activity experienced during this period have also been noticed. However, few studies have explored the role of students’ resources as used during the COVID-19 pandemic, such as coping strategies. This study aimed to (1) explore the associations among psychological distress, disordered eating, coping strategies, and weight changes; (2) examine the moderating role of coping strategies in the process of weight gain and weight loss; and (3) study the mediating role of coping strategies in the process of weight gain and weight loss. The participants in this study were 772 students at a Portuguese university. The data collected included sociodemographic data and three self-reported questionnaires (Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale; Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire; Brief COPE) during the first few months of the pandemic, which included a 72-day full national lockdown. The results showed that depression, anxiety, stress, and disordered eating were related to increased weight. Guilt, denial, self-distraction, use of substances, and behavior disinvestment were also related to increased weight. Behavioral disinvestment had a strong mediating effect on weight gain. Additionally, planning, positive reframing, and acceptance all showed a moderating effect between psychological distress and weight changes. In conclusion, coping strategies allow for a better understanding of the mechanisms by which psychological distress and disordered eating were related to weight changes during the pandemic.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The objective of this paper was to test Meyers methodology to calculate bark volume as a percent of total outside bark volume and to see how acurate it is, as well as to test the hypothesis that the bark volume in percentage is constant along the stem. The data came from 179 Mimosa scabrella Bentham trees from spontaneous generation stands, located in the Curitiba metropolitan region, Paraná, Brazil. All trees were cut down and their diameters inside and outside bark were measured at different heights, according to Hohenadls formula. The observed volume outside and inside bark obtained by Hohenadls formula made it possible to compare the bark volumes in percent obtained by Meyers formula with the observed volumes obtained by the conventional formula. It was observed that Meyers formula, using only diameter measurments at DBH, underestimated the percent of bark volume for all DBH and ages classes. It was also observed that the ratio between diameter inside bark over diameter outside bark is not constant along the stem

The article reports on the activiti escarried out by the Emerging Urban Practices (2019) extension project in two territories in Porto Alegre – RS: Vila Nazaré and occupation Povo Sem Medo de Porto Alegre. In its second edition, the extension project guided its actions in the technical consultancy in Architecture and Urban Planning and in the debate on the right to the city and decent housing. The Village and the occupation must be understood in the contexto of the expansion of the runway of the landings and take off of the International Airport Salgado Filho and the consequente removal of families from their territory. The actions carried out and the debates that emerged from the extension project took two assumptions as a reference: the proposal for critical, participatory and solidary education (Betto, 2018) and the concepts of dialogicity and praxis (Freire, 1987).O artigo relata as atividades realizadas pelo projeto de extensão Práticas Urbanas Emergentes (2019) em dois territórios na cidade de Porto Alegre – RS: a Vila Nazaré e a Ocupação Povo Sem Medo de Porto Alegre.
