Few-mode fibre group-delays with intermediate coupling
We study the probability density function of the group-delay in few-mode fibres, validating for the first time an analytical estimation for the maximum group-delay spread as a function of linear mode coupling for fibres with more than three LP modes
Suppression of nonlinear distortion in few-mode fibres using strong mode coupling
In this paper, we investigate the impact of linear mode coupling on the efficiency of intermodal four-wave mixing and on the group delay statistics in few-mode fibres. The investigation will include not only the weak or strong linear coupling regimes, but also the transition region between them, the intermediate coupling regime. This analysis will allow to assess the level of coupling strength require to suppress the nonlinear distortion in a few-mode fibre below the level of distortion for single-mode propagation without mode coupling
Advantages of strong mode coupling for suppression of nonlinear distortion in few-mode fibers
Nonlinear distortion in few-mode fibers for intermediate coupling is studied for the first time. Coupling strengths beyond -20 dB/100m give suppression of nonlinear distortion below the isolated mode without mode coupling
The effect of high optical power on modern fibre at 1.5 μm
Here we study the impact of high optical power, within the C-band, on the reliability of modern single mode fibre. Our experiments show that modern fibre demonstrates >10 dB higher power handling performance beyond what has previously been reported
Nonlinear pulse distortion in few-mode fiber
Nonlinear pulse propagation in a few mode fiber is experimentally investigated, by measuring temporal and phase responses of the output pulses by use of a frequency discriminator technique, showing that self-phase modulation, dispersion and linear mode-coupling are the dominant effects
On the group delay statistics of few-mode fibres with intermediate linear mode coupling
We report an investigation on the statistics of group delay for few-mode fibres operating in the weak and strong linear coupling regimes as well as in the intermediate coupling regime. A single expression linking the standard deviation of the group delay spread to the fibre linear mode coupling is validated for any coupling regime, considering up to six linearly polarized guided modes. Furthermore, the study of the probability density function of the group delays allowed deriving and validating an analytical estimation for the maximum group delay spread as a function of linear mode coupling
Nonlinear soliton propagation in a few mode optical fibre
We experimentally demonstrate adiabatic soliton propagation in the fundamental mode of a few mode optical fibre and more complex behaviour in a higher order mode, indicating that the impact of nonlinearities differs for each mode
Experimental Analysis of Nonlinear Impairments in Fibre Optic Transmission Systems up to 7.3 THz
An effective way of increasing the overall optical fibre capacity is by expanding the bandwidth used to transmit signals. In this paper, the impact of expanding the transmission bandwidth on the optical communication system is experimentally studied using the achievable rates as a performance metric. The trade-offs between the use of larger bandwidths and higher nonlinear interference (NLI) noise is experimentally and theoretically analysed. The growth of NLI noise is investigated for spectral bandwidths from 40 GHz up to 7.3 THz using 64-QAM and Nyquist pulse-shaping. Experimental results are shown to be in line with the predictions from the Gaussian- Noise model showing a logarithmic growth in NLI noise as the signal bandwidth is extended. A reduction of the information rate of only 10% was found between linear and non-linear transmission across several transmission bandwidths, all the way up to 7.3 THz. Finally, the power transfer between channels due to stimulated Raman scattering effect is analysed showing up to 2 dB power tilt at optimum power for the largest transmitted bandwidth of 7.3 THz
First demonstration of 2μm data transmission in a low-loss hollow core photonic Bandgap fiber
The first demonstration of a hollow core photonic bandgap fiber suitable for high-rate data transmission at 2µm is presented. Using a custom built Thulium doped fiber amplifier, error-free 8Gbit/s transmission in an optically amplified data channel at 2008nm is reported for the first time
