    An optimal linear solver for the Jacobian system of the extreme type-II Ginzburg--Landau problem

    This paper considers the extreme type-II Ginzburg--Landau equations, a nonlinear PDE model for describing the states of a wide range of superconductors. Based on properties of the Jacobian operator and an AMG strategy, a preconditioned Newton--Krylov method is constructed. After a finite-volume-type discretization, numerical experiments are done for representative two- and three-dimensional domains. Strong numerical evidence is provided that the number of Krylov iterations is independent of the dimension nn of the solution space, yielding an overall solver complexity of O(n)

    A New Frequency-Luminosity Relation for Long GRBs?

    We have studied power density spectra (PDS) of 206 long Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). We fitted the PDS with a simple power-law and extracted the exponent of the power-law (alpha) and the noise-crossing threshold frequency (f_th). We find that the distribution of the extracted alpha peaks around -1.4 and that of f_th around 1 Hz. In addition, based on a sub-set of 58 bursts with known redshifts, we show that the redshift-corrected threshold frequency is positively correlated with the isotropic peak luminosity.     On multiplicities in length spectra of arithmetic hyperbolic three-orbifolds

    Asymptotic laws for mean multiplicities of lengths of closed geodesics in arithmetic hyperbolic three-orbifolds are derived. The sharpest results are obtained for non-compact orbifolds associated with the Bianchi groups SL(2,o) and some congruence subgroups. Similar results hold for cocompact arithmetic quaternion groups, if a conjecture on the number of gaps in their length spectra is true. The results related to the groups above give asymptotic lower bounds for the mean multiplicities in length spectra of arbitrary arithmetic hyperbolic three-orbifolds. The investigation of these multiplicities is motivated by their sensitive effect on the eigenvalue spectrum of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a hyperbolic orbifold, which may be interpreted as the Hamiltonian of a three-dimensional quantum system being strongly chaotic in the classical limit.Comment: 29 pages, uuencoded ps.     Using linkography to compare creative methods for group ideation

    This paper compares a new creative design method, based on the principles of drama improvisation, with brainstorming. The evolution and development of the Design Improv method is reviewed, and the results of an evaluation of both methods in controlled team ideation sessions are documented. The creative characteristics relevant to their quantitative and visual interpretation are analysed using linkography, identifying the most prominent variations in performance with respect to inter-connectedness, parallel thinking and idea diversity. We describe an adapted and expanded process for robust linkograph development and reflect on the value, challenges and limitations of both the linkograph creation and the perceptive insights they can provide

    Evidence of Natural Bluetongue Virus Infection among African Carnivores

    Bluetongue is an International Office of Epizootics List A disease described as the century\u27s most economically devastating affliction of sheep. Bluetongue (BLU) viruses were thought to infect only ruminants, shrews, and some rodents, but recently, inadvertent administration of BLU virus-contaminated vaccine resulted in mortality and abortion among domestic dogs. We present evidence of natural BLU virus infection among African carnivores that dramatically widens the spectrum of susceptible hosts. We hypothesize that such infection occurred after ingestion of meat and organs from BLU virus infected prey species. The effect of BLU virus on endangered carnivores such as the cheetah and African wild dog requires urgent investigation. Also, the role of carnivores in the epizootiology of this disease needs elucidation

    RNA replicon particles derived from a vaccine strain of Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEE) were used as a vector for expression of the major envelope proteins (GL and M) of equine arteritis virus (EAV), both individually and in heterodimer form (GL/M). Open reading frame 5 (ORF5) encodes the GL protein, which expresses the known neutralizing determinants of EAV (U. B. R. Balasuriya, J. F. Patton, P. V. Rossitto, P. J. Timoney, W. H. McCollum, and N. J. MacLachlan, Virology 232:114–128, 1997). ORF5 and ORF6 (which encodes the M protein) of EAV were cloned into two different VEE replicon vectors that contained either one or two 26S subgenomic mRNA promoters. These replicon RNAs were packaged into VEE replicon particles by VEE capsid protein and glycoproteins supplied in trans in cells that were coelectroporated with replicon and helper RNAs. The immunogenicity of individual replicon particle preparations (pVR21-GL, pVR21-M, and pVR100-GL/M) in BALB/c mice was determined. All mice developed antibodies against the recombinant proteins with which they were immunized, but only the mice inoculated with replicon particles expressing the GL/M heterodimer developed antibodies that neutralize EAV. The data further confirmed that authentic posttranslational modification and conformational maturation of the recombinant GL protein occur only in the presence of the M protein and that this interaction is necessary for induction of neutralizing antibodies

    A haplotype map of allohexaploid wheat reveals distinct patterns of selection on homoeologous genomes

To investigate the impact of selection on variants distributed among homoeologous wheat genomes and to build a foundation for understanding genotype-phenotype relationships, we performed population-scale re-sequencing of a diverse panel of wheat lines. Results: A sample of 62 diverse lines was re-sequenced using the whole exome capture and genotyping-by-sequencing approaches. We describe the allele frequency, functional significance, and chromosomal distribution of 1.57 million single nucleotide polymorphisms and 161,719 small indels. Our results suggest that duplicated homoeologous genes are under purifying selection. We find contrasting patterns of variation and inter-variant associations among wheat genomes; this, in addition to demographic factors, could be explained by differences in the effect of directional selection on duplicated homoeologs. Only a small fraction of the homoeologous regions harboring selected variants overlapped among the wheat genomes in any given wheat line. These selected regions are enriched for loci associated with agronomic traits detected in genome-wide association studies. Conclusions: Evidence suggests that directional selection in allopolyploids rarely acted on multiple parallel advantageous mutations across homoeologous regions, likely indicating that a fitness benefit could be obtained by a mutation at any one of the homoeologs. Additional advantageous variants in other homoelogs probably either contributed little benefit, or were unavailable in populations subjected to directional selection.     Creating citizen-consumers? Public service reform and (un)willing selves

    About the book: Postmodern theories heralded the "death of the subject", and thereby deeply contested our intuition that we are free and willing selves. In recent times, the (free) will has come under attack yet again. Findings from the neuro- and cognitive sciences claim the concept of will to be scientifically untenable, specifying that it is our brain rather than our 'self' which decides what we want to do. In spite of these challenges however, the willing self has come to take centre stage in our society: juridical and moral practices ascribing guilt, or the organization of everyday life attributing responsibilities, for instance, can hardly be understood without taking recourse to the willing subject. In this vein, the authors address topics such as the genealogy of the concept of willing selves, the discourse on agency in neuroscience and sociology, the political debate on volition within neoliberal and neoconservative regimes, approaches toward novel forms of relational responsibility as well as moral evaluations in conceptualizing autonomy

    Preheating in Supersymmetric Hybrid Inflation

    We study preheating in a general class of supersymmetric hybrid inflation model. Supersymmetry leads to only one coupling constant in the potential and thus only one natural frequency of oscillation for the homogeneous fields, whose classical evolution consequently differs from that of a general (non-supersymmetric) hybrid model. We emphasise the importance of mixing effects in these models which can significantly change the rate of production of particles. We perform a general study of the rate of production of the particles associated with the homogeneous fields, and show how preheating is efficient in producing these quanta. Preheating of other particle species will be model dependent, and in order to investigate this we consider a realistic working model of supersymmetric hybrid inflation which solves the strong-CP problem via an approximate Peccei-Quinn symmetry, which was proposed by us previously. We study axion production in this model and show that properly taking into account the mixing between the fields suppresses the axion production, yet enhances the production of other particles. Finally we demonstrate the importance of backreaction effects in this model which have the effect of shutting off axion production, leaving the axion safely within experimental bounds.Comment: 37 pages, Latex, 11 eps figures, 14 ps (colour) figure
