Is sea-basing a viable method of providing logistic support to the UK amphibious force?
Maritime power has traditionally been a central part of the UK’s defence planning and is well
suited to supporting a wide range of military operations. The littoral area has always created
problems for naval planners as most landings historically have had to endure a tactical
separation of the naval and land components, and hence an artificial seam between the Navy
and the Marines. With the end of the Cold War, amphibious operations are going to be more
difficult to conduct than in the past, and amphibious forces are going to have to adopt
manoeuvre warfare capabilities in order to successfully complete their missions. It is very
likely that amphibious forces will have to conduct operations against a numerically superior
enemy, who is on his own terrain, and be surrounded by a neutral, if not hostile populace. As
such, the concept of Operational Manoeuvre From The Sea (OMFTS) whereby the sea is used
as a manoeuvre space, and command and control is fast enough to cope with large amounts of
information, but at the same time allow subordinates maximum flexibility to use their
initiative, is increasingly attractive. It will be important not only for the combat elements to be
able to use this new concept, but the Combat Service Support (CSS) elements as well
Interleukin (IL)–12 and IL-23 Are Key Cytokines for Immunity against Salmonella in Humans
Patients with inherited deficiency of the interleukin (IL)–12/IL-23–interferon (IFN)–g axis show increased susceptibility to invasive disease caused by the intramacrophage pathogens salmonellae and mycobacteria. We analyzed data on 154 patients with such deficiency. Significantly more patients with IL-12/IL-23–component deficiency had a history of salmonella disease than did those with IFN-g–component deficiency. Salmonella disease was typically severe, extraintestinal, and caused by nontyphoidal serovars. These findings strongly suggest that IL-12/IL-23 is a key cytokine for immunity against salmonella in humans and that IL-12/IL-23 mediates this protective effect partly through IFN-g–independent pathways. Investigation of the IL-12/IL-23–IFN-g axis should be considered in patients with invasive salmonella disease
Exploring the ‘middle ground’ between state and market: the example of China
Studies of housing systems lying in the ‘middle ground’ between state and market are subject to three important shortcomings. First, the widely used Esping-Andersen (EA) approach assesses only a subset of the key housing outcomes and may be less helpful for describing changes in housing policy regimes. Second, there is too much emphasis on tenure transitions, and an assumed close correspondence between tenure labels and effective system functioning may not be valid. Third, due attention has not been given to the spatial dimensions in which housing systems operate, in particular when housing policies have a significant devolved or localised emphasis. Updating EA’s framework, we suggest a preliminary list of housing system indicators in order to capture the nature of the housing systems being developed and devolved. We verified the applicability of this indicator system with the case of China. This illustrates clearly the need for a more nuanced and systematic basis for categorising differences and changes in welfare and housing policies
Projections of Australian obstetricians ceasing practice and the reasons

An external link to the publisher’s copy is included.Objectives: To assess the intentions of Australia's specialist obstetricians to cease practice and their reasons for abandoning this specialty. Design: A structured questionnaire posted to Fellows of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG), issued 11 July 2001 with a return date of 31 July 2001 (in practice, responses were accepted up to 31 August 2001). Participants: Australian specialists holding a Fellowship of the RANZCOG. Main outcome measures: Demographic data (eg, age, sex); type and location of practice; past, current and intended future obstetric practice; reasons for stopping practice; cost of indemnity premiums; experience of litigation and its influence on practice; and experience in giving medicolegal opinion. Results: The response rate was 74% (829/1116), with 826 responses fulfilling our selection criteria. The median number of years since admission as a Fellow was 17 (range, 1–47 years), and 19% (158/817) of respondents were women (9 people did not specify their sex). Of the 826 respondents, 596 (72%) were currently practising obstetrics, 548 (66%) intended to still be practising after one year, 365 (44%) intended to be practising after five years, and 196 (24%) intended to be practising after 10 years. The median indemnity premium in 2001–02 was 156 000) for practising obstetricians. The main reasons given for ceasing obstetrics were intention to specialise in gynaecology, fear of litigation, high indemnity costs, family disruption, and long working hours. About two-thirds of respondents (557/818) had experienced the threat of litigation, and almost all (768/803) desired some type of "no-fault" indemnity scheme. Thirty-three of the 314 respondents who had given medicolegal opinions accounted for 71% of the total number of opinions. Many of these were non-practising obstetricians who were not accredited RANZCOG expert witnesses. Latitude dependence of co-rotating shock acceleration
Energetic particle observations in the outer heliosphere (approx 12 A. U.) by the LECP instruments on the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 spacecraft are discussed that show a definite latitude dependence of the number and intensity of particle enhancements produced by corotating interplanetary regions during an interval when no solar energetic particle events were observed. The particle enhancements are fewer in number and less intense at higher (approx 20 deg.) heliolatitudes. However, the similar spectral shapes of the accelerated particles at the two spacecraft indicate that the acceleration process is the same at the two latitudes, but less intense at the higher latitude
Development of catecholamine and cortisol stress responses in zebrafish.
Both adrenal catecholamines and steroids are known to be involved in the stress response, immune function, blood pressure and energy homeostasis. The response to stress is characterized by the activation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the sympathetic-adrenomedullary system, though the correlation with activation and development is not well understood. We evaluated the stress response of both cortisol and catecholamines during development in zebrafish. Zebrafish at two different stages of development were stressed in one of two different ways and cortisol and catecholamine were measured. Cortisol was measured by enzyme immune assay and catecholamine was measured by ELISA. Our results show that stress responses are delayed until after the synthesis of both cortisol and catecholamines. These observations suggest that the development of HPA axis may be required for the acquisition of the stress response for cortisol and catecholamines

Charged Higgs phenomenology in the flipped two Higgs doublet model
We study the phenomenology of the charged Higgs boson in the "flipped" two
Higgs doublet model, in which one doublet gives mass to up-type quarks and
charged leptons and the other gives mass to down-type quarks. We present the
charged Higgs branching ratios and summarize the indirect constraints. We
extrapolate existing LEP searches for H+H- and Tevatron searches for t tbar
with t --> H+ b into the flipped model and extract constraints on MH+ and the
parameter tan(beta). We finish by reviewing existing LHC charged Higgs searches
and suggest that the LHC reach in this model could be extended for charged
Higgs masses below the tb threshold by considering t tbar with t --> H+ b and
