Representing multifunctional cities: density and diversity in space and time

    Get PDF
In this paper, we define measures of urban diversity, density and segregation using newdata and software systems based on GIS. These allow us to visualise the meaning of themultifunctional city. We begin with a discussion of how cities have become moresegregated in their land uses and activities during the last 200 years and how the currentfocus is on reversing this trend through limiting urban sprawl and bringing new lifeback to the inner and central city. We define various indices which show how diversityand density manifest themselves spatially. We argue that multifunctionalism is a relativeconcept, dependent upon the spatial and temporal scale that we use to think about themixing and concentration of urban land uses. We present three examples using spatiallysmoothed indicators of diversity: for a world city ? London, for a highly controlledpolycentric urban region ? Randstad Holland, and for a much more diffusely populatedsemi-urban region ? Venice-Padua-Teviso. We conclude by illustrating that urbandiversity varies as people engage in different activities associated with different landuses throughout the day, as well as through the vertical, third dimension of the city. Thisimpresses the point that we need to understand multifunctional cities in all theirdimensions of space and time

An Animation Framework for Continuous Interaction with Reactive Virtual Humans

    Get PDF
We present a complete framework for animation of Reactive Virtual Humans that offers a mixed animation paradigm: control of different body parts switches between keyframe animation, procedural animation and physical simulation, depending on the requirements of the moment. This framework implements novel techniques to support real-time continuous interaction. It is demonstrated on our interactive Virtual Conductor

Suppression of spin-torque in current perpendicular to the plane spin-valves by addition of Dy cap layers

We demonstrate that the addition of Dy capping layers in current perpendicular to the plane giant magneto-resistive spin-valves can increase the critical current density beyond which spin-torque induced instabilities are observed by about a factor of three. Current densities as high as 5e7 A/cm2 are measured provided that the electron current flows from the free to the reference layer. While Dy capped samples exhibit nonmagnetic 1/f noise, it is sufficiently small to be unimportant for read head operation at practical data rates.Comment: 13 pages (manuscript form), with 5 figures. Web-based database for facial expression analysis

    No full text
ABSTRACT * In the last decade, the research topic of automatic analysis of facial expressions has become a central topic in machine vision research. Nonetheless, there is a glaring lack of a comprehensive, readily accessible reference set of face images that could be used as a basis for benchmarks for efforts in the field. This lack of easily accessible, suitable, common testing resource forms the major impediment to comparing and extending the issues concerned with automatic facial expression analysis. In this paper, we discuss a number of issues that make the problem of creating a benchmark facial expression database difficult. We then present the MMI Facial Expression Database, which includes more than 1500 samples of both static images and image sequences of faces in frontal and in profile view displaying various expressions of emotion, single and multiple facial muscle activation. It has been built as a web-based direct-manipulation application, allowing easy access and easy search of the available images. This database represents the most comprehensive reference set of images for studies on facial expression analysis to date. 1

Coolidge effect in pond snails: male motivation in a simultaneous hermaphrodite

    Get PDF
Background. The simultaneously hermaphroditic pond snail, Lymnaea stagnalis, can mate in the male and female role, but within one copulation only one sexual role is performed at a time. Previous work has shown that male motivation is determined by the availability of seminal fluid in the prostate gland, which is detected via a nervous connection by the brain area controlling male behaviour. Based on this knowledge, patterns of sexual role alternations within mating pairs can be explained. Results. The data presented here reveal that these snails can donate and receive sperm several times within 24 hours, and that they have increased mating rates in larger groups (i.e. more mating opportunities). For mating pairs we show, by introducing novel mating partners after copulation, that animals do inseminate new partners, while they are no longer motivated to inseminate their original partners. Conclusion. Our findings provide the first direct evidence for higher motivation in a hermaphrodite to copulate when a new partner is encountered. This Coolidge effect seems to be attenuated when mucus trails are excluded, which suggests that a chemical or textural cue may be responsible for mediating this response to sperm competition. © 2007 Koene and Ter Maat; licensee BioMed Central Ltd

Analysis of the Influence of Competence, Training and Compensation on Employee Performance with Job Satisfaction as Intervening Variable on the Fire and Emergency Services Team in Mining Work Area PT Vale Ind Tbk

Human role as a resource in the organization is increasingly believed in its importance, thus increasingly encouraging the development of knowledge about how to utilize human resources in order to achieve optimal conditions. This study aims to determine the influence of competence, training and compensation jointly and partially to Job Satisfaction. In addition, we also jointly examine the influence of competence, training and compensation on the performance of Fire and Emergency Services employees of PT VALE Indonesia, Tbk. This study was conducted by taking as many as 55 respondents who also used as sample research with the distribution of respondents by age, last education level, gender, position in the job. Data collection is done through interview technique in the beginning of data collection and questionnaires or questionnaires distributed to the respondents used as data in data processing research. Data were analyzed by using Path Analysis (Path Analysis). The result of the research shows that the competence variable has a direct and significant effect on the performance of Fire and Emergency Services employees of PT VALE Ind, Tbk with coefficient value of 0,397. Training and compensation have direct and positive impact on job satisfaction with coefficient value of 0,325 and 0,494. Based on the result of the research, it can be concluded that there are some other factors that influence the variable of job satisfaction and employee performance, but not described in this case
