Boron enrichment in Martian clay
We have detected a concentration of boron in martian clay far in excess of that in any previously reported extra-terrestrial object. This enrichment indicates that the chemistry necessary for the formation of ribose, a key component of RNA, could have existed on Mars since the formation of early clay deposits, contemporary to the emergence of life on Earth. Given the greater similarity of Earth and Mars early in their geological history, and the extensive disruption of Earth's earliest mineralogy by plate tectonics, we suggest that the conditions for prebiotic ribose synthesis may be better understood by further Mars exploration
Color-superconductivity in the strong-coupling regime of Landau gauge QCD
The chirally unbroken and the superconducting 2SC and CFL phases are
investigated in the chiral limit within a Dyson-Schwinger approach for the
quark propagator in QCD. The hierarchy of Green's functions is truncated such
that at vanishing density known results for the vacuum and at asymptotically
high densities the corresponding weak-coupling expressions are recovered. The
anomalous dimensions of the gap functions are analytically calculated. Based on
the quark propagator the phase structure is studied, and results for the gap
functions, occupation numbers, coherence lengths and pressure differences are
given and compared with the corresponding expressions in the weak-coupling
regime. At moderate chemical potentials the quasiparticle pairing gaps are
several times larger than the extrapolated weak-coupling results.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures; v2: one reference adde
A luminosity monitor for the A4 parity violation experiment at MAMI
A water Cherenkov luminosity monitor system with associated electronics has
been developed for the A4 parity violation experiment at MAMI. The detector
system measures the luminosity of the hydrogen target hit by the MAMI electron
beam and monitors the stability of the liquid hydrogen target. Both is required
for the precise study of the count rate asymmetries in the scattering of
longitudinally polarized electrons on unpolarized protons. Any helicity
correlated fluctuation of the target density leads to false asymmetries. The
performance of the luminosity monitor, investigated in about 2000 hours with
electron beam, and the results of its application in the A4 experiment are
presented.Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures, submitted to NIM

Water reuse for irrigated agriculture in Jordan: challenges of soil sustainability and the role of management strategies
Reclaimed water provides an important contribution to the water balance in water-scarce Jordan, but the quality of this water presents both benefits and challenges. Careful management of reclaimed water is required to maximize the nutrient benefits while minimizing the salinity risks. This work uses a multi-disciplinary research approach to show that soil response to irrigation with reclaimed water is a function of the management strategies adopted on the farm by the water user. The adoption of management methods to maintain soil productivity can be seen to be a result of farmersâ awareness to potentially plant-toxic ions in the irrigation water (70% of Jordan Valley farmers identified salinization as a hazard from irrigation with reclaimed water). However, the work also suggests that farmersâ management capacity is affected by the institutional management of water. About a third (35%) of farmers in the Jordan Valley claimed that their ability to manage salinization was limited by water shortages. Organizational interviews revealed that institutional awareness of soil management challenges was quite high (34% of interviewees described salinization as a risk from water reuse), but strategies to address this challenge at the institutional level require greater development
The No-Pole Condition in Landau gauge: Properties of the Gribov Ghost Form-Factor and a Constraint on the 2d Gluon Propagator
We study the Landau-gauge Gribov ghost form-factor sigma(p^2) for SU(N)
Yang-Mills theories in the d-dimensional case. We find a qualitatively
different behavior for d=3,4 w.r.t. d=2. In particular, considering any
(sufficiently regular) gluon propagator D(p^2) and the one-loop-corrected ghost
propagator G(p^2), we prove in the 2d case that sigma(p^2) blows up in the
infrared limit p -> 0 as -D(0)\ln(p^2). Thus, for d=2, the no-pole condition
\sigma(p^2) 0) can be satisfied only if D(0) = 0. On the
contrary, in d=3 and 4, sigma(p^2) is finite also if D(0) > 0. The same results
are obtained by evaluating G(p^2) explicitly at one loop, using fitting forms
for D(p^2) that describe well the numerical data of D(p^2) in d=2,3,4 in the
SU(2) case. These evaluations also show that, if one considers the coupling
constant g^2 as a free parameter, G(p^2) admits a one-parameter family of
behaviors (labelled by g^2), in agreement with Boucaud et al. In this case the
condition sigma(0) <= 1 implies g^2 <= g^2_c, where g^2_c is a 'critical'
value. Moreover, a free-like G(p^2) in the infrared limit is obtained for any
value of g^2 < g^2_c, while for g^2 = g^2_c one finds an infrared-enhanced
G(p^2). Finally, we analyze the Dyson-Schwinger equation (DSE) for sigma(p^2)
and show that, for infrared-finite ghost-gluon vertices, one can bound
sigma(p^2). Using these bounds we find again that only in the d=2 case does one
need to impose D(0) = 0 in order to satisfy the no-pole condition. The d=2
result is also supported by an analysis of the DSE using a spectral
representation for G(p^2). Thus, if the no-pole condition is imposed, solving
the d=2 DSE cannot lead to a massive behavior for D(p^2). These results apply
to any Gribov copy inside the so-called first Gribov horizon, i.e. the 2d
result D(0) = 0 is not affected by Gribov noise. These findings are also in
agreement with lattice data.Comment: 40 pages, 2 .eps figure
Waves attractors in rotating fluids: a paradigm for ill-posed Cauchy problems
In the limit of low viscosity, we show that the amplitude of the modes of
oscillation of a rotating fluid, namely inertial modes, concentrate along an
attractor formed by a periodic orbit of characteristics of the underlying
hyperbolic Poincar\'e equation. The dynamics of characteristics is used to
elaborate a scenario for the asymptotic behaviour of the eigenmodes and
eigenspectrum in the physically relevant r\'egime of very low viscosities which
are out of reach numerically. This problem offers a canonical ill-posed Cauchy
problem which has applications in other fields.Comment: 4 pages, 5 fi
Two- and three-point functions in two-dimensional Landau-gauge Yang-Mills theory: Continuum results
We investigate the Dyson-Schwinger equations for the gluon and ghost
propagators and the ghost-gluon vertex of Landau-gauge gluodynamics in two
dimensions. While this simplifies some aspects of the calculations as compared
to three and four dimensions, new complications arise due to a mixing of
different momentum regimes. As a result, the solutions for the propagators are
more sensitive to changes in the three-point functions and the ansaetze used
for them at the leading order in a vertex a expansion. Here, we therefore go
beyond this common truncation by including the ghost-gluon vertex
self-consistently for the first time, while using a model for the three-gluon
vertex which reproduces the known infrared asymptotics and the zeros at
intermediate momenta as observed on the lattice. A separate computation of the
three-gluon vertex from the results is used to confirm the stability of this
behavior a posteriori. We also present further arguments for the absence of the
decoupling solution in two dimensions. Finally, we show how in general the
infrared exponent kappa of the scaling solutions in two, three and four
dimensions can be changed by allowing an angle dependence and thus an essential
singularity of the ghost-gluon vertex in the infrared.Comment: 24 pages; added references, improved choices of parameters for vertex
