    Entre a família e o trabalho: uma análise da qualidade da inserção ocupacional no Brasil urbano sob uma perspectiva de gênero, 1996-2006

    This article analyzes the relationship between types of family arrangements and work quality regarding type of occupation, time in the occupation, status of occupation (whether under the Brazilian labor law or not) and income of the population aged 25 to 64 years in the Brazilian urban job market in 1996, 2001, and 2006. In order to achieve this objective we compare working women against working men so that we can identify sex differentials stemming from the different gender roles men and women take up in the family and in the job market. The models are specified for each sex assuming that the processes of division of household duties as well as the type and quality of work one can obtain in the job market is different for women and men. We fit multinomial logit models to adjust data from 1996, 2001, and 2006 Pesquisa Nacional de Domicílios (PNAD) to examine the significant associations between family arrangements and work quality. The coefficients are compared to check whether the difference between men’s and women’s are statistically significant. The results indicate that family arrangement, position in the family and domestic duties are factors associated with the higher odds of women, as compared to men, to be in job positions of lower quality. This situation has intensified in 2006, mainly amongst older women, in spite of the improvement of the job market from 2004 to 2006.Brazil, family arrangements, work quality

    Structural Insights into Hysteretic Spin‐Crossover in a Set of Iron(II)‐2,6‐bis(1 H ‐Pyrazol‐1‐yl)Pyridine) Complexes

    Bistable spin-crossover (SCO) complexes that undergo abrupt and hysteretic (ΔT1/2_{1/2}) spin-state switching are desirable for molecule-based switching and memory applications. In this study, we report on structural facets governing hysteretic SCO in a set of iron(II)-2,6-bis(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine) (bpp) complexes – [Fe(bpp−COOEt)2_{2}](X)2_{2}⋅CH3_{3}NO2_{2} (X=ClO4_{4}, 1; X=BF4_{4}, 2). Stable spin-state switching – T1/2_{1/2}=288 K; ΔT1/2_{1/2}=62 K – is observed for 1, whereas 2 undergoes above-room-temperature lattice-solvent content-dependent SCO – T1/2_{1/2}=331 K; ΔT1/2_{1/2}=43 K. Variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies of the complexes revealed pronounced molecular reorganizations – from the Jahn-Teller-distorted HS state to the less distorted LS state – and conformation switching of the ethyl group of the COOEt substituent upon SCO. Consequently, we propose that the large structural reorganizations rendered SCO hysteretic in 1 and 2. Such insights shedding light on the molecular origin of thermal hysteresis might enable the design of technologically relevant molecule-based switching and memory elements

    Genetic polymorphism of miR-196a-2 is associated with bone mineral density (BMD)

    MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNA molecules that post-transcriptionally regulate the translation of messenger RNAs. Given the crucial role of miRNAs in gene expression, genetic variants within miRNA-related sequences may affect miRNA function and contribute to disease risk. Osteoporosis is characterized by reduced bone mass, and bone mineral density (BMD) is a major diagnostic proxy to assess osteoporosis risk. Here, we aimed to identify miRNAs that are involved in BMD using data from recent genome-wide association studies (GWAS) on femoral neck, lumbar spine and forearm BMD. Of 242 miRNA-variants available in the GWAS data, we found rs11614913:C > T in the precursor miR-196a-2 to be significantly associated with femoral neck-BMD (p-value = 9.9 × 10-7, β = −0.038) and lumbar spine-BMD (p-value = 3.2 × 10-11, β = −0.061). Furthermore, our sensitivity analyses using the Rotterdam study data showed a sex-specific association of rs11614913 with BMD only in women. Subsequently, we highlighted a number of miR-196a-2 target genes, expressed in bone and associated with BMD, that may mediate the miRNA function in BMD. Collectively, our results suggest that miR-196a-2 may contribute to variations in BMD level. Further biological investigations will give more insights into the mechanisms by which miR-196a-2 control expression of BMD-related genes

    Strong-coupling study of the Gribov ambiguity in lattice Landau gauge

    We study the strong-coupling limit beta=0 of lattice SU(2) Landau gauge Yang-Mills theory. In this limit the lattice spacing is infinite, and thus all momenta in physical units are infinitesimally small. Hence, the infrared behavior can be assessed at sufficiently large lattice momenta. Our results show that at the lattice volumes used here, the Gribov ambiguity has an enormous effect on the ghost propagator in all dimensions. This underlines the severity of the Gribov problem and calls for refined studies also at finite beta. In turn, the gluon propagator only mildly depends on the Gribov ambiguity.Comment: 14 pages, 22 figures; minor changes, matches version to appear in Eur. Phys. J.

    Infrared exponents and the strong-coupling limit in lattice Landau gauge

    We study the gluon and ghost propagators of lattice Landau gauge in the strong-coupling limit beta=0 in pure SU(2) lattice gauge theory to find evidence of the conformal infrared behavior of these propagators as predicted by a variety of functional continuum methods for asymptotically small momenta q2ΛQCD2q^2 \ll \Lambda_\mathrm{QCD}^2. In the strong-coupling limit, this same behavior is obtained for the larger values of a^2q^2 (in units of the lattice spacing a), where it is otherwise swamped by the gauge field dynamics. Deviations for a^2q^2 < 1 are well parameterized by a transverse gluon mass 1/a\propto 1/a. Perhaps unexpectedly, these deviations are thus no finite-volume effect but persist in the infinite-volume limit. They furthermore depend on the definition of gauge fields on the lattice, while the asymptotic conformal behavior does not.     Moderate to severe gambling problems and traumatic brain injury: A population-based study

    Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common injury characterized by a change in brain function after an external blow to the head and is associated with substance abuse, psychological distress, risk-taking, and impulsivity. Convenience and clinical samples have also linked TBI to problem gambling, but have not ruled out confounding variables such as hazardous drinking and psychological distress. This study examines the relationship between TBI and moderate to severe problem gambling in a general population probability sample controlling for hazardous drinking and psychological distress. The data were obtained from a 2015–2016 cross-sectional general population telephone survey of adults ages 18+from Ontario, Canada (N = 3809). Logistic regression was used to estimate the association as adjusted odds ratios (AOR). Moderate to severe problem gambling was independently associated with a history of TBI after adjusting for potential confounders (AOR: 2.80), and had a statistically significant relationship with psychological distress (AOR = 2.74), hazardous drinking (AOR = 2.69), and lower educational levels (AOR = 0.37). This study provides further data to suggest a link between TBI and moderate to severe problem gambling; however, more research is needed to determine if there is a causal relationship or the potential implications for prevention and treatment
