Fabrication of an active nanostencil with integrated microshutters
An active nanostencil, consisting of a thin (200 nm) silicon nitride membrane with attached polysilicon microactuators that can be used to dynamically open and/or close holes in the silicon nitride membrane, is presented. This nanostencil can be used as a shadow mask in an evaporation setup. Main features of the nanostencil are the absence of sacrificial oxide in the final product, strengthening of the membrane by a polysilicon hexagonal structure that is attached directly to the membrane and the use of low-doped regions in the polysilicon to separate the stator and rotor electrically
How to compare arc-annotated sequences: The alignment hierarchy
International audienceWe describe a new unifying framework to express comparison of arc-annotated sequences, which we call alignment of arc-annotated sequences. We first prove that this framework encompasses main existing models, which allows us to deduce complexity results for several cases from the literature. We also show that this framework gives rise to new relevant problems that have not been studied yet. We provide a thorough analysis of these novel cases by proposing two polynomial time algorithms and an NP-completeness proof. This leads to an almost exhaustive study of alignment of arc-annotated sequences
Isospin influences on particle emission and critical phenomenon in nuclear dissociation
Features of particle emission and critical point behavior are investigated as
functions of the isospin of disassembling sources and temperature at a moderate
freeze-out density for medium-size Xe isotopes in the framework of isospin
dependent lattice gas model. Multiplicities of emitted light particles,
isotopic and isobaric ratios of light particles show the strong dependence on
the isospin of the dissociation source, but double ratios of light isotope
pairs and the critical temperature determined by the extreme values of some
critical observables are insensitive to the isospin of the systems. Values of
the power law parameter of cluster mass distribution, mean multiplicity of
intermediate mass fragments (), information entropy () and Campi's
second moment () also show a minor dependence on the isospin of Xe
isotopes at the critical point. In addition, the slopes of the average
multiplicites of the neutrons (), protons (), charged particles
(), and IMFs (), slopes of the largest fragment mass number
(), and the excitation energy per nucleon of the disassembling source
() to temperature are investigated as well as variances of the
distributions of , , , , and . It
is found that they can be taken as additional judgements to the critical
phenomena.Comment: 9 Pages, 8 figure
Best-Effort Patching for Multicast True VoD Service
A multicast Video-on-Demand (VoD) system allows clients to share a server stream by batching their requests, and hence, improves channel utilization. However, it is very difficult to equip such a VoD system with full support for interactive VCR functions which are important to a growing number of Internet applications. In order to eliminate service (admission) latency, patching was proposed to enable an existing multicast session to dynamically add new clients, and requests can be served without delay if patching channels are available. A true VoD (TVoD) service should support not only zero-delay client admission but also continuous VCR-like interactivity. However, the conventional patching is only suitable for admission control. We propose a new patching scheme, called Best-Effort Patching (BEP), that offers a TVoD service in terms of both request admission and VCR interactivity. Moreover, by using a novel dynamic merging algorithm, BEP significantly improves the efficiency of TVoD interactivity, especially for popular videos. We also model and evaluate the efficiency of the dynamic merging algorithm. It is shown that BEP outperforms the conventional TVoD interaction protocols.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/47328/1/11042_2005_Article_6851.pd
S4 Flavor Symmetry and Fermion Masses: Towards a Grand Unified theory of Flavor
Pursuing a bottom-up approach to explore which flavor symmetry could serve as
an explanation of the observed fermion masses and mixings, we discuss an
extension of the standard model (SM) where the flavor structure for both quarks
and leptons is determined by a spontaneously broken S4 and the requirement that
its particle content is embeddable simultaneously into the conventional SO(10)
grand unified theory (GUT) and a continuous flavor symmetry G_f like SO(3)_f or
SU(3)_f. We explicitly provide the Yukawa and the Higgs sector of the model and
show its viability in two numerical examples which arise as small deviations
from rank one matrices. In the first case, the corresponding mass matrix is
democratic and in the second one only its 2-3 block is non-vanishing. We
demonstrate that the Higgs potential allows for the appropriate vacuum
expectation value (VEV) configurations in both cases, if CP is conserved. For
the first case, the chosen Yukawa couplings can be made natural by invoking an
auxiliary Z2 symmetry. The numerical study we perform shows that the best-fit
values for the lepton mixing angles theta_12 and theta_23 can be accommodated
for normal neutrino mass hierarchy. The results for the quark mixing angles
turn out to be too small. Furthermore the CP-violating phase delta can only be
reproduced correctly in one of the examples. The small mixing angle values are
likely to be brought into the experimentally allowed ranges by including
radiative corrections. Interestingly, due to the S4 symmetry the mass matrix of
the right-handed neutrinos is proportional to the unit matrix.Comment: 27 pages, published version with minor change
Polyubiquitin binding to ABIN1 is required to prevent autoimmunity
The protein ABIN1 possesses a polyubiquitin-binding domain homologous to that present in nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kappa B) essential modulator (NEMO), a component of the inhibitor of NF-kappa B (I kappa B) kinase (IKK) complex. To address the physiological significance of polyubiquitin binding, we generated knockin mice expressing the ABIN1[D485N] mutant instead of the wild-type (WT) protein. These mice developed all the hallmarks of autoimmunity, including spontaneous formation of germinal centers, isotype switching, and production of autoreactive antibodies. Autoimmunity was suppressed by crossing to MyD88(-/-) mice, demonstrating that toll-like receptor (TLR)-MyD88 signaling pathways are needed for the phenotype to develop. The B cells and myeloid cells of the ABIN1[D485N] mice showed enhanced activation of the protein kinases TAK, IKK-alpha/beta, c-Jun N-terminal kinases, and p38 alpha mitogen-activated protein kinase and produced more IL-6 and IL-12 than WT. The mutant B cells also proliferated more rapidly in response to TLR ligands. Our results indicate that the interaction of ABIN1 with polyubiquitin is required to limit the activation of TLR-MyD88 pathways and prevent autoimmunity
Development and Application of the Diffusive Gradients in Thin-Films Technique for Measuring Psychiatric Pharmaceuticals in Natural Waters
Psychiatric pharmaceuticals are widely distributed in the aquatic environment and have attracted recent attention due to their potential for environmental effects. A robust and reliable in situ passive sampling approach, the diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) technique, is developed here to measure 14 psychiatric pharmaceuticals. A new binding material, mixed-mode cation exchange resin (Poly-Sery MCX, 40 μm, CNW, Germany), was used for the first time in DGT and compared to XAD and HLB. Reliable elution efficiencies of the pharmaceuticals from the binding gels were obtained in methanol/ammonia, and diffusion coefficients for all the compounds were determined. The influence of diffusive layer thickness (0.515–2.015 mm), deployment time (3–168 h), and important environmental conditions—pH (3.02–9.45), ionic strength (0.0001–0.5 M), and dissolved organic matter (0–20 mg L–1)—were evaluated. The capacity of XAD, HLB, and MCX gels for binding all the test pharmaceuticals was ∼335 μg per disc, meaning that DGT could theoretically be deployed for over 30 months if there are no competitive effects or confounding factors. The uptake kinetics of psychiatric pharmaceuticals onto MCX gel were much faster than those onto XAD and HLB gels in the first hour. DGT measured concentrations of test pharmaceuticals at two sample points in a river (over 6 days) were comparable to those obtained by grab sampling. This study demonstrates the accuracy and reliability of DGT for measuring psychiatric pharmaceuticals across a wide range of freshwater conditions found in the natural environment
On the Nature and Genesis of EUV Waves: A Synthesis of Observations from SOHO, STEREO, SDO, and Hinode
A major, albeit serendipitous, discovery of the SOlar and Heliospheric
Observatory mission was the observation by the Extreme Ultraviolet Telescope
(EIT) of large-scale Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) intensity fronts propagating
over a significant fraction of the Sun's surface. These so-called EIT or EUV
waves are associated with eruptive phenomena and have been studied intensely.
However, their wave nature has been challenged by non-wave (or pseudo-wave)
interpretations and the subject remains under debate. A string of recent solar
missions has provided a wealth of detailed EUV observations of these waves
bringing us closer to resolving their nature. With this review, we gather the
current state-of-art knowledge in the field and synthesize it into a picture of
an EUV wave driven by the lateral expansion of the CME. This picture can
account for both wave and pseudo-wave interpretations of the observations, thus
resolving the controversy over the nature of EUV waves to a large degree but
not completely. We close with a discussion of several remaining open questions
in the field of EUV waves research.Comment: Solar Physics, Special Issue "The Sun in 360",2012, accepted for

DNA Methylation Biomarkers of IQ Reduction are Associated with Long-term Lead Exposure in School Aged Children in Southern China
Although lead associated with intelligence decline in children has long been reported, studies combining intelligence determination, molecular mechanisms exploration, and biomarker screen are quite rare. In this study, based on 333 children aged 9-11, we determined the role of DNA methylation (DNAm) in the relationship of lead exposure with children's intelligence. DNAm was measured from children's blood DNA specimens, and mediation analysis was performed to identify DNAm biomarkers mediating the lead-intelligence relationship. We identified forty-three differentially methylated regions (DMRs), and two fragments (FAM50B1 and PTCHD3) significantly mediated the lead-intelligence relationship, with contribution rates of 30.36% (p = 0.010) and 60.36% (p <0.001), respectively. In addition, blood lead levels (BLLs) lower than 100 μg/L still adversely affected children's IQs and DNAm of the two fragments. Our data suggests that DNAm mediates lead-associated cognitive delay in children and blood lead reference value for school-aged children (100 μg/L) should be revised, and the candidate biomarkers can be used in related neurological diseases in future
