    Energy-saving Potential Study on Telecommunication Base Station Free Cooling With a Thermosyphon Heat Exchanger in China

    The energy consumption of air conditioning for a telecommunication base station (TBS) in China can be significantly decreased when an air to air thermosyphon heat exchanger is used for free cooling in low atmosphere temperature days. The model for the typical TBS in China was established and the air conditioning energy consumption was analyzed for the cities with climatic data in China. Taking the sandwich steel panel envelope with the thickness of 50 mm for an example, the energy consumption of an air conditioner combined with a thermosyphon heat exchanger in a TBS and the energy-saving potential for using ambient energy were calculated, and were shown on the map of China by different colors according to the energy-saving rates. The static payback periods were also presented. The results demonstrate that the operation mode of the combined system of an air conditioner and a thermosyphon heat exchanger for controlling the indoor temperature can bring enormous energysaving potential for a TBS in different Chinese cities except the southern areas

    Positive resources for combating depressive symptoms among Chinese male correctional officers: perceived organizational support and psychological capital

    BACKGROUND: Although correctional officers (COs) clearly suffer from depression, positive resources for combating depression have been rarely studied in this population. The purpose of the study was to examine the associations of perceived organizational support (POS) and psychological capital (PsyCap) with depressive symptoms among Chinese COs. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in a province of northeast China during March–April 2011. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to 1900 male COs from four male prisons. Depressive symptoms, POS, and PsyCap (self efficacy, hope, resilience, and optimism) were measured anonymously. A total of 1428 effective respondents with 953 frontline COs (FL-COs) and 475 non-frontline COs (NFL-COs) became our final sample. Hierarchical linear regression was performed to explore the factors associated with depressive symptoms. Asymptotic and resampling strategies were used to examine the mediating roles of PsyCap and its four components. RESULTS: The level of depressive symptoms of FL-COs was significantly higher than that of NFL-COs (t = 2.28, p = 0.023). There were significant negative associations of POS, PsyCap, hope, resilience, and optimism with depressive symptoms among FL-COs. In NFL-COs, POS, PsyCap, and optimism were negatively associated with depressive symptoms. POS was positively associated with PsyCap and its four components among both FL-COs and NFL-COs. For FL-COs, PsyCap (a*b = −0.143, BCa 95% CI: –0.186, –0.103, p < 0.05), resilience (a*b = −0.052, BCa 95% CI: –0.090, –0.017, p < 0.05), and optimism (a*b = −0.053, BCa 95% CI: –0.090, –0.016, p < 0.05) significantly mediated the association between POS and depressive symptoms. For NFL-COs, PsyCap (a*b = −0.126, BCa 95% CI: –0.186, –0.065, p < 0.05) and optimism (a*b = −0.066, BCa 95% CI: –0.116, –0.008, p < 0.05) significantly mediated the association. CONCLUSIONS: Perceived organizational support and psychological capital could be positive resources for combating depressive symptoms in Chinese male COs. Psychological capital and its components (resilience and optimism) partially mediate the association between perceived organizational support and depressive symptoms. Therefore, organizational support and psychological capital investment (especially resilience and optimism) should be included in depression preventions and treatments targeting Chinese male COs

    A comparative analysis of carcass and meat traits of yaks

    This study primarily compares the carcass and meat quality traits of yaks of different ages and genders. Measurements of carcass weight and characteristics were taken for male and female Gannan yaks aged 1–2, 2–4, 4–6, and 6 years and older. Additionally, the weight and meat quality of 9 major cuts were measured. The results indicated significant variations in various aspects of yak carcasses around the age of 4, and substantial differences between male and female yaks after the age of 4. Different body regions showed distinct meat quality. The tenderness of the tenderloin is the highest (P &lt; 0.05), while the striploin is the lowest (P &lt; 0.05), and the protein content of the hindquarter cuts is higher. Principal component analysis (PCA) was employed to identify key factors significantly affecting total meat yield. Subsequently, predictive models for total meat yield were developed for yaks aged 1–4 years, 4+ years for males, and 4+ years for females based on these factors. Furthermore, the meat from the 9 major cuts was classified according to its intrinsic meat quality traits, which holds significant reference value for the assessment of yak carcass yield grades and the grading of quality in meat cuts, ultimately contributing to the realization of the full potential of the yak meat industry

    Reactive Oxygen Species Affect the Tenderness of Bovine Muscle by Regulating Glycolysis during the Early Stage of Postmortem Cold Storage

    This study was conducted to investigate the regulatory mechanism of reactive oxygen species (ROS) on the glycolysis pathway of bovine muscle and its impact on meat tenderness at the early stage of postmortem cold storage. Fresh beef was treated with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as a major ROS, N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) as an ROS scavenger, or physiological saline as a control before being stored at 4 ℃. After 0.5, 6, 12, 24, and 48 hours, the glycolysis level and tenderness indices were assessed. In addition, tandem mass tag (TMT)-labeled quantitative proteomics was used for protein identification and quantitative analysis of the samples after 24 hours and for screening of differential proteins in the glycolysis pathway. The findings showed that the glycolysis level increased significantly in the H2O2-treated group, and glycogenolysis and lactic acid accumulation were significantly higher than those in the other two groups (P < 0.05). In contrast, the glycolysis process was significantly suppressed by NAC treatment. The H2O2-treated group reached the ultimate pH after 12 hours, 12 and 36 hours earlier than the control and NAC groups, respectively. The shear force of the H2O2-treated group reached its maximum after 12 hours, and the myofibrillar fragmentation index (MFI) was significantly greater than that of the other two groups after 6–48 hours (P < 0.05), indicating that a higher ROS level can accelerate the tenderization of bovine muscle by enhancing the glycolysis capacity during postmortem refrigeration. Totally eight up-regulated proteins and two down-regulated proteins in the glycolysis pathway were identified in the H2O2-treated versus control groups after 24 hours of refrigeration. Among these proteins, the up-regulated core proteins of phosphoglycerate mutase (PGAM), enolase (ENO), and pyruvate dehydrogenase E1 subunit beta (PDHB) coordinated with the down-regulated pyruvate dehydrogenase E1 subunit alpha (PDHA) to accelerate the glycolysis process. In conclusion, ROS can speed up glycolysis and consequently improve meat tenderness by regulating the expression of key proteins in the glycolysis pathway

    Molecular responses to salinity stress in Salix matsudana (Koidz) females and males

    Sexual dimorphism has commonly been found in many species. The phenotypes of Salix matsudana females and males are different under salinity stress. An F1 population was selected to compare the differences between males and females. As a result, males showed stronger roots and heavier dry weights than females. The unique molecular mechanisms of males and females under salinity stress were further analyzed based on the root transcriptome of males and females. Both males and females up-regulated systemic acquired resistance genes, such as ADH and oxygenase-related genes, to resist salt. Moreover, many other abiotic stress response genes were up-regulated in males to adjust to salinity stress, while females showed more down-regulation of nitrogen metabolism-related genes to decrease the harm from salinity stress. The research on salinity tolerance in Salix matsudana males and females would help to further understand sexual dimorphism under selection pressure and provide benefits to the ecological environment

    Genome-Wide Identification, Sequence Variation, and Expression of the Glycerol-3-Phosphate Acyltransferase (GPAT) Gene Family in Gossypium

    Cotton is an economically important crop grown for natural fiber and seed oil production. Cottonseed oil ranks third after soybean oil and colza oil in terms of edible oilseed tonnage worldwide. Glycerol-3-phosphate acyltransferase (GPAT) genes encode enzymes involved in triacylglycerol biosynthesis in plants. In the present study, 85 predicted GPAT genes were identified from the published genome data in Gossypium. Among them, 14, 16, 28, and 27 GPAT homologs were identified in G. raimondii, G. arboreum, G. hirsutum, and G. barbadense, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that a total of 108 GPAT genes from cotton, Arabidopsis and cacao could be classified into three groups. Furthermore, through comparison, the gene structure analyses indicated that GPAT genes from the same group were highly conserved between Arabidopsis and cotton. Segmental duplication could be the major driver for GPAT gene family expansion in the four cotton species above. Expression patterns of GhGPAT genes were diverse in different tissues. Most GhGPAT genes were induced or suppressed after salt or cold stress in Upland cotton. Eight GhGPAT genes were co-localized with oil and protein quantitative trait locus (QTL) regions. Thirty-two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were detected from 12 GhGPAT genes, sixteen of which in nine GhGPAT genes were classified as synonymous, and sixteen SNPs in ten GhGPAT genes non-synonymous. Two SNP markers of the GhGPAT16 and GhGPAT26 genes were significantly correlated with cotton oil content in one of the three field tests. This study shed lights on the molecular evolutionary properties of GPAT genes in cotton, and provided reference for improvement of cotton response to abiotic stress and the genetic improvement of cotton oil content

    Genome-Scale Analysis of the WRI-Like Family in Gossypium and Functional Characterization of GhWRI1a Controlling Triacylglycerol Content

    Cotton (Gossypium spp.) is the most important natural fiber crop and the source of cottonseed oil, a basic by-product after ginning. AtWRI1 and its orthologs in several other crop species have been previously used to increase triacylglycerols in seeds and vegetative tissues. In the present study, we identified 22, 17, 9, and 11 WRI-like genes in G. hirsutum, G. barbadense, G. arboreum, and G. raimondii, respectively. This gene family was divided into four subgroups, and a more WRI2-like subfamily was identified compared with dicotyledonous Arabidopsis. An analysis of chromosomal distributions revealed that the 22 GhWRI genes were distributed on eight At and eight Dt subgenome chromosomes. Moreover, GhWRI1a was highly expressed in ovules 20–35 days after anthesis and was selected for further functional analysis. Ectopic expression of GhWRI1a rescued the seed phenotype of a wri1-7 mutant and increased the oil content of Arabidopsis seeds. Our comprehensive genome-wide analysis of the cotton WRI-like gene family lays a solid foundation for further studies
