    An experimental study of reinforced concrete beamcolumn joint with partially high strengthened longitudinal bar

    It is necessary to generate the yield position away from the column face to minimize damage to the beam-column joint during a large earthquake in a reinforced concrete building. The same efficacy can be realized using partially high strengthened rebar. The number of longitudinal bars can be calculated for a bending moment smaller than the column face, reducing their number compared to the conventional bar-arrangement method. This paper describes reinforced concrete an interior beam-column subassemblage tests using this rebar as the longitudinal bars of beams and a column. The beam yield hinge was formed at a position apart from the column face, and the damage to the beam-column joint was less than the conventional bar-arrangement method. Additionally, the good performance was obtained if the bending strength of the column was large, even if the shear capacity margin of the beam-column joint was small. The column-beam flexural strength ratio and shear capacity margin at the beam-column joint need to be set with consideration of their relationship

    Effects of UV Crosslinking under High Temperature on the Refractive Indices and Aggregation Structures of Benzophenone-containing Polyimides

    For controlling the optical and thermal properties of photo-sensitive benzophenone (BP)-containing polyimides (PIs), an attempt was made to fix the dense polymer chain packing induced by high pressure using intermolecular crosslinking reactions. The effects of temperature and pressure during UV irradiation on the reaction rates of photo-crosslinking and refractive indices were evaluated. After UV irradiation at ambient temperature and pressure, refractive indices of the PIs increased due to the densification of chain packing. The degree of crosslinking was further increased with increasing the irradiation temperature. The PI films irradiated at 400 MPa exhibited higher refractive indices than those irradiated at 0.1 MPa, despite the nearly identical reaction rates. The fluorescence intensities of the PIs irradiated at 400 MPa showed smaller dependence on the pressure than those irradiated at 0.1 MPa, which indicates that the dense chain packing formed under high pressures was partially and effectively fixed by UV irradiation. The increase in refractive indices of the PIs irradiated at elevated pressures is attributable to the densification of aggregation structures, which was controllable by pressure under UV irradiation

    The genome sequence of pepper vein yellows virus (family Luteoviridae, genus Polerovirus)

    The complete genome of pepper vein yellows virus (PeVYV) was sequenced using random amplification of RNA samples isolated from vector insects (Aphis gossypii) that had been given access to PeVYV-infected plants. The PeVYV genome consisted of 6244 nucleotides and had a genomic organization characteristic of members of the genus Polerovirus. PeVYV had highest amino acid sequence identities in ORF0 to ORF3 (75.9 - 91.9%) with tobacco vein distorting polerovirus, with which it was only 25.1% identical in ORF5. These sequence comparisons and previously studied biological properties indicate that PeVYV is a distinctly different virus and belongs to a new species of the genus Polerovirus

    Improved Resection and Outcome of Colon-Cancer Liver Metastasis with Fluorescence-Guided Surgery Using In Situ GFP Labeling with a Telomerase-Dependent Adenovirus in an Orthotopic Mouse Model.

    Fluorescence-guided surgery (FGS) of cancer is an area of intense development. In the present report, we demonstrate that the telomerase-dependent green fluorescent protein (GFP)-containing adenovirus OBP-401 could label colon-cancer liver metastasis in situ in an orthotopic mouse model enabling successful FGS. OBP-401-GFP-labeled liver metastasis resulted in complete resection with FGS, in contrast, conventional bright-light surgery (BLS) did not result in complete resection of the metastasis. OBP-401-FGS reduced the recurrence rate and prolonged over-all survival compared with BLS. In conclusion, adenovirus OBP-401 is a powerful tool to label liver metastasis in situ with GFP which enables its complete resection, not possible with conventional BLS

    Strict Limit on CPT Violation from Polarization of Gamma-Ray Bursts

    We report the strictest observational verification of CPT invariance in the photon sector, as a result of gamma-ray polarization measurement of distant gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), which are brightest stellar-size explosions in the universe. We detected the gamma-ray polarization of three GRBs with high significance, and the source distances may be constrained by a well-known luminosity indicator for GRBs. For the Lorentz- and CPT-violating dispersion relation E_{\pm}^2=p^2 \pm 2\xi p^3/M_{Pl}, where \pm denotes different circular polarization states of the photon, the parameter \xi is constrained as |\xi|<O(10^{-15}). Barring precise cancellation between quantum gravity effects and dark energy effects, the stringent limit on the CPT-violating effect leads to the expectation that quantum gravity presumably respects the CPT invariance.Comment: 4 pages; accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters; redshift estimates of GRBs changed (i.e z=0.382 was wrong for GRB 110721A) and calculations of \xi limit improved from the previous versio

    Significance of Stabilometry for Assessing Postoperative Body Sway in Patients with Cervical Myelopathy

    [Study Design] Prospective study. [Purpose] To examine the changes in body sway using stabilometry in patients who underwent cervical laminoplasty for cervical myelopathy. [Overview of Literature] Although the patients of cervical myelopathy complain body sway there are few report to examine body sway objectively. [Methods] Patients who received treatment for cervical myelopathy between October 2010 and February 2013 were included. Twenty-one patients underwent cervical laminoplasty (myelopathy group). Body sway was assessed using stabilometry, wherein patients stood on a stabilometer with their eyes closed for 30 seconds. The Romberg ratio, outer peripheral area (OPA) with eyes closed (cm2), and total locus length per unit area (L/A) with eyes closed (/cm) were examined. Examinations were performed preoperatively (at baseline) and at 8 weeks postoperatively. Examination results of patients in the myelopathy group were compared with those of 17 healthy individuals (control group). Clinical symptoms were evaluated using the Japanese Orthopaedic Association scale score (JOA score) and the timed up and go (TUG) test. [Results] In the myelopathy and control groups, the mean baseline Romberg ratio, OPA, and L/A were 2.3±1.2, 8.9±5.5 cm2, and 14.2±5.3/cm and 1.4±1.0, 4.3±2.8 cm2, and 23.7±10.1/cm, respectively. Eight weeks after laminoplasty, only L/A showed significant improvement from baseline in the myelopathy group (23.2±10.1 to 16.8±7.9; p=0.03). The Romberg ratio and OPA showed improvement in the myelopathy group, but the changes were not statistically significant. JOA scores and TUG test results in this group significantly improved from baseline to 8 weeks after laminoplasty (12.7 to 13.4 and 10.8 to 8.0 seconds, respectively; both p<0.05). [Conclusions] L/A is a useful parameter for measuring body sway to assess the recovery of body sway after laminoplasty

    Hyperfine Structure of the Electron Spin Resonance of Phosphorus-Doped Si Nanocrystals

    Electronic states of P donors in Si nanocrystals (nc-Si) embedded in insulating glass matrices have been studied by electron spin resonance. Doping of P donors into nc-Si was demonstrated by the observation of optical absorption in the infrared region due to intraconduction band transitions. P hyperfine structure (hfs) was successfully observed at low temperatures. The observed splitting of the hfs was found to be much larger than that of the bulk Si:P and depended strongly on the size of nc-Si. The observed strong size dependence indicates that the enhancement of the hyperfine splitting is caused by the quantum confinement of P donors in nc-Si
