    Who, Me? Increasing High School Girls’ Entrepreneurial Self-Efficacy, Knowledge and Intentions

    This paper provides a case study of two female-only entrepreneurship education programs designed by faculty from Brescia University College, Canada’s only women’s university, located in London, Ontario, Canada. The programs were designed to address the substantial gender gap found in women’s participation in entrepreneurial activities by inspiring, educating, and exposing program participants to entrepreneurial endeavours. One program was a one-day conference and the other was a one-week boot camp. The study was designed to better understand how to strengthen the female entrepreneurial pipeline by measuring changes in entrepreneurial knowledge, entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE), and entrepreneurial intentions (EI). Program participants were asked to complete pre- and post-experience questionnaires where information about leadership experiences, role models, entrepreneurial knowledge, ESE, and EI was collected. The results of the analysis reveal that the gender-specific programming increased ESE in the one-week camp and that both programs significantly increased both objective and self-perceived knowledge of entrepreneurship. The authors conclude that the female-only educational interventions helped to transform adolescent girls’ sense of entrepreneurial possibilities. We recommend a scaffolded and integrated approach to future entrepreneurship education programming to address and ultimately close the entrepreneurship gender gap

    We show that the mapping torus of a hyperbolic group by a hyperbolic automorphism is cubulable. Along the way, we (i) give an alternate proof of Hagen and Wise's theorem that hyperbolic free-by-cyclic groups are cubulable, and (ii) extend to the case with torsion Brinkmann's thesis that a torsion-free hyperbolic-by-cyclic group is hyperbolic if and only if it does not contain Z2\mathbb{Z}^2-subgroups.Comment: 11 page

    Changing Needs of Individuals with Disabilities in the Time of COVID-19 as Observed by a Family Navigation Program in Miami, FL

    The Family Navigator Program (FNP) is designed to help families navigate the complex system of services available to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), chronic health conditions, mental health issues, and other special health care needs. Based at the Mailman Center for Child Development at the University of Miami, the FNP is free and available to all families in South Florida. Most families enrolled in the FNP are receiving medical services from a university clinic; however, the program also accepts referrals from outside agencies and self-referrals. The aim of this study was to investigate the needs of families enrolled in the FNP before and after March 2020, when stay-at-home orders were put in place to address the COVID-19 pandemic. One hundred forty-five families enrolled in the FNP between November 2019 and mid-March 2020 were selected as a pre-COVID sample to be compared with 197 families enrolled from mid-March to September 2020. Families were deidentified, and data on demographics and specific needs were extracted. Demographics included race and ethnicity, language, age group, zip code, and disability or medical condition. Specific needs were defined as (1) topics on which families required education and (2) resources to which families were referred. There were no statistically significant differences in demographics before and after March 2020. There was a significant increase in referrals to financial resources during COVID (OR= 3.019, 95% CI [1.445-6.308]). There were also significant changes in the number of families provided with education on the following: increases in federal and state programs (OR = 2.156, 95% CI [1.306-3.560]) and other miscellaneous topics (1.902, 95% CI [1.081-3.348]); and decreases in school systems (OR=0.531 CI, 95% [0.328-0.858]) and therapies (CI, 95% [0.345-0.825]). These differences likely reflect the economic and social toll that the pandemic has taken on families caring for individuals with IDD and special health care needs in South Florida. Families’ priorities shifted from school and therapy to economic needs. The FNP adjusted by administering services by telephone or online, rather than by in-person meetings. These data provide a snapshot of how the needs of families changed during COVID-19 in one diverse, urban community

    Machine learning for automatic prediction of the quality of electrophysiological recordings

    The quality of electrophysiological recordings varies a lot due to technical and biological variability and neuroscientists inevitably have to select “good” recordings for further analyses. This procedure is time-consuming and prone to selection biases. Here, we investigate replacing human decisions by a machine learning approach. We define 16 features, such as spike height and width, select the most informative ones using a wrapper method and train a classifier to reproduce the judgement of one of our expert electrophysiologists. Generalisation performance is then assessed on unseen data, classified by the same or by another expert. We observe that the learning machine can be equally, if not more, consistent in its judgements as individual experts amongst each other. Best performance is achieved for a limited number of informative features; the optimal feature set being different from one data set to another. With 80–90% of correct judgements, the performance of the system is very promising within the data sets of each expert but judgments are less reliable when it is used across sets of recordings from different experts. We conclude that the proposed approach is relevant to the selection of electrophysiological recordings, provided parameters are adjusted to different types of experiments and to individual experimenters

    Aryl hydrocarbon receptor-dependent upregulation of Cyp1b1 by TCDD and diesel exhaust particles in rat brain microvessels

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>AhR activates the transcription of several target genes including CYP1B1. Recently, we showed <it>CYP1B1 </it>as the major cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzyme expressed in human brain microvessels. Here, we studied the effect of AhR activation by environmental pollutants on the expression of Cyp1b1 in rat brain microvessels.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Expression of AhR and Cyp1b1 was detected in isolated rat brain microvessels. AhR was immunovisualised in brain microvessel endothelial cells. The effect of AhR ligands on Cyp1b1 expression was studied using isolated brain microvessels after <it>ex vivo </it>and/or <it>in vivo </it>exposure to TCDD, heavy hydrocarbons containing diesel exhaust particles (DEP) or Δ<sup>9</sup>-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ<sup>9</sup>-THC).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>After <it>ex vivo </it>exposure to TCDD (a highly potent AhR ligand) for 3 h, <it>Cyp1b1 </it>expression was significantly increased by 2.3-fold in brain microvessels. A single i.p. dose of TCDD also increased <it>Cyp1b1 </it>transcripts (22-fold) and Cyp1b1 protein (2-fold) in rat brain microvessels at 72 h after TCDD. Likewise, DEP treatment (<it>in vivo </it>and <it>ex vivo</it>) strongly induced Cyp1b1 protein in brain microvessels. DEP-mediated Cyp1b1 induction was inhibited by actinomycin D, cycloheximide, or by an AhR antagonist. In contrast, a sub-chronic <it>in vivo </it>treatment with Δ<sup>9</sup>-THC once daily for 7 seven days had no effect on <it>Cyp1b1 </it>expression</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our results show that TCDD and DEP strongly induced Cyp1b1 in rat brain microvessels, likely through AhR activation.</p

    An evidence for surface expression of an immunogenic epitope of sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum calcium-ATPase2a on antigen-presenting cells from naive mice in the mediation of autoimmune myocarditis

    We recently reported identification of sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum calcium-ATPase2a (SERCA2a) 971–990, which induces atrial myocarditis by generating autoreactive T cells in A/J mice. However, it was unknown how antigen-sensitized T cells could recognize SERCA2a 971–990, since SERCA2a-expression is confined to an intracellular compartment. In this report, we present evidence that antigen-presenting cells (APCs) from lymphoid and non-lymphoid organs in naïve animals present SERCA2a 971–990 and stimulate antigen-specific T cells. Using major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II dextramers for SERCA2a 971–990, we created a panel of T cell hybridomas and demonstrated that splenocytes from naïve A/J mice stimulated the hybridoma cells without exogenous supplementation of SERCA2a 971–990. We then recapitulated this phenomenon by using SERCA2a 971–990-specific primary T cells, verifying that the T cell responses were MHC-restricted. Furthermore, SERCA2a 971–990-sensitzed T cells exposed to APCs from naïve mice were found to produce the inflammatory cytokines interferon-γ, granulocyte macrophage colony stimulating factor, and interleukin-17A, which are implicated in the induction of myocarditis. Finally, while T cells exposed to mononuclear cells (MNCs) obtained from heart and liver also responded similarly to splenocytes, endothelial cells (ECs) generated from the corresponding organs displayed opposing effects, in that the proliferative responses were suppressed with the heart ECs, but not with the liver ECs. Taken together, our data suggest that the surface expression of SERCA2a 971–990 by naïve APCs can potentially trigger pathogenic autoreactive T cell responses under conditions of autoimmunity, which may have implications in endothelial dysfunction

    Neoadjuvant radiotherapy of primary irresectable unicentric Castleman's disease: a case report and review of the literature

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Castleman disease (CD) is a rare benign disorder characterised by hyperplasia of lymphoid tissue that may develop at a single site or throughout the body. The etiology of this disorder is unclear, although the histopathological presentation can be differentiated into a hyaline vascular variant, a plasma cell variant and a mixed variant. Clinically, it has been recorded that 3 manifestations of CD are characterized: a localized unicentric type, a generalized multicentric type and a mixed form. Surgery remains the main treatment for resectable unicentric CD, since removal of the large node is possible without further complications. No consensus has been reached concerning the most adequate treatment for irresectable unicentric CD.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Case report of a 67 year old woman.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>This report, describes the case of a 67-year-old woman with unicentric Castleman disease located in the right lower abdomen. The patient had symptoms of fatigue, dyspnoea and pain in the right lower abdomen. Computed tomography (CT)- examination revealed a tumour, which had grown to form a close relationship with the common iliac vessels and the sacral bone. A Laparotomy procedure revealed that the tumour was an irresectable mass. Neo-adjuvant radiotherapy (40 Gy) was administered in order to downsize the tumour. Six weeks later a new CT-scan revealed a major reduction of the tumour, which enabled a successful radical resection of the tumour to be performed. Histopathological analysis of the tumour showed the hyaline vascular type of CD.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Neo-adjuvant radiotherapy should be considered in case of an irresectable unicentric CD.</p
