    Morphology and structure of the 1999 lava flows at Mount Cameroon Volcano (West Africa) and their bearings on the emplacement dynamics of volume-limited flows

    The morphology and structure of the 1999 lava flows at Mount Cameroon volcano are documented and discussed in relation to local and source dynamics. Structures are analysed qualitatively and more detailed arguments are developed on the processes of levee formation and systematic links between flow dynamics and levee-channel interface geometry. The flows have clear channels bordered by four main types of levees: initial, accretionary, rubble and overflow levees. Thermally immature pahoehoe lava units with overflow drapes define the proximal zone, whereas rubble and accretionary levees are common in the distal region bordering thermally mature aa clinker or blocky aa flow channels. Pressure ridges, squeeze-ups and pahoehoe ropes are the prevalent compressive structures. Standlines displayed on clinkery breccias are interpreted to represent levee-channel interactions in response to changing flow levels. These data complement previous knowledge on lava flow morphology, thus far dominated by Etnean and Hawaiian examples

    Assessment of IPE Core Competencies During Advanced Pharmacy Practice Clinical Experiences

    Purpose: To illustrate incorporation of select interprofessional education collaborative (IPEC) competencies into preceptor evaluations of students for advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs). To describe the tool and evaluate the results obtained. Background: Interprofessional education (IPE) is a necessary component of pharmacy curricula. Pharmacy students at this health sciences university participate in a required two-year, longitudinal IPE program during their first two program years; some students participate in additional IPE programming throughout the final two program years. To evaluate the success of these experiences, student achievement of IPEC competencies during their APPEs in the curriculum’s final year was measured. Description of Intervention: During 2014-2015, the curriculum committee updated preceptor evaluations of students by including select IPEC competencies. These applied to core APPE environments: acute care (AC), ambulatory care (AMC), hospital and community pharmacy. The annual 2015 preceptor development program focused on IPE. The updated preceptor evaluations of students were instituted in the 2015-2016 academic year. Results: Student achievement of the competencies was evaluated. Among the three values/ethics IPEC competencies achievement was reached by ≥98.2% of students. Among roles/responsibilities competencies, 81.8% of students accomplished one of these in the AMC environment; ≥98% of students achieved the other roles/responsibility competencies in other APPE environments. Among communication competencies, ≤64% of students accomplished one of these in the AC and AMC environments. Greater than 93% of students achieved the team/teamwork competencies in the AC and AMC environments. Conclusion: Measuring achievement of IPEC competencies during APPEs has confirmed that, overall, pharmacy students appear prepared for interprofessional, collaborative practice. Interprofessional communication is an area for increased focus in IPE activities during years 1-3 of the curriculum. Relevance to Interprofessional Education: This process may be replicable by other health professions. Assessing student achievement of the IPEC competencies during the clinical components of curricula provides valuable information. Two to Three Learning Objectives Identify a process for incorporating IPE competency measurement into preceptor evaluations of students on clinical rotations.     Personality structure and social style in macaques.

    Why regularities in personality can be described with particular dimensions is a basic question in differential psychology. Nonhuman primates can also be characterized in terms of personality structure. Comparative approaches can help reveal phylogenetic constraints and social and ecological patterns associated with the presence or absence of specific personality dimensions. We sought to determine how different personality structures are related to interspecific variation in social style. Specifically, we examined this question in 6 different species of macaques, because macaque social style is well characterized and can be categorized on a spectrum of despotic (Grade 1) versus tolerant (Grade 4) social styles. We derived personality structures from adjectival ratings of Japanese (Macaca fuscata; Grade 1), Assamese (M. assamensis; Grade 2), Barbary (M. sylvanus; Grade 3), Tonkean (M. tonkeana; Grade 4), and crested (M. nigra; Grade 4) macaques and compared these species with rhesus macaques (M. mulatta; Grade 1) whose personality was previously characterized. Using a nonparametric method, fuzzy set analysis, to identify commonalities in personality dimensions across species, we found that all but 1 species exhibited consistently defined Friendliness and Openness dimensions, but that similarities in personality dimensions capturing aggression and social competence reflect similarities in social styles. These findings suggest that social and phylogenetic relationships contribute to the origin, maintenance, and diversification of personality

    An Objective Method to Assess and Recommend Exertion and Exercise Targets for Return to Play Post concussion

    Introduction. Concussions are of significant concern for athletic trainers, and there is a critical need to objectively and safely allow an athlete to return to play. In sports the objective is return as safely and soon as possible. Exertion is a consideration regarding progressing an athlete back to play. The ability to exert in cardiovascular and strength and conditioning contexts are two critical steps in most return to play protocols. Being able to make objective recommendations is urgently needed, as trial and error leads to unnecessary risk of eliciting symptoms and/or causing setbacks. Objective. The object of this paper is to present the athletic trainer with data associated with a methodology that can be used to aid in designing a cardiovascular and strength training program post concussion. This objective measure does not rely on subjective patient reports of symptoms and utilizes a reflex based assessment method. Description. The transient exertion related carotid (TERC) murmur is a murmur that is heard at the carotid arteries during exercise. It normally is heard at around a heart rate of 150, but is heard at lower heart rates in patients who have sustained a concussion. Listening for the TERC murmur during a cardiovascular and strength training assessment can be used to provide information to the athletic trainer about safer target heart rates or safer lifting strategies post-concussion. We present data concerning 71 athletes (mean age 20.8 years) who were assessed for cardiovascular conditioning and body weight assessment. With 73% of the cardio assessment subjects, a TERC murmur was detected at a heart rate of 127.2 bpm (± 16 SD). For the strength assessment 42.1% had a TERC murmur. Clinical advantages. The clinical advantage of the TERC murmur is that it can be utilized by any athletic trainer trained to take a blood pressure. It provides objective information concerning safe target heart rates that will allow an athletic trainer to recommend appropriate exercise prescriptions. The TERC murmur assessment can also be used to help guide strength training protocols to facilitate safe return. Being able to safely recommend a means by which an athlete can recommence their training (cardiovascular and/or strength training) may accelerate return to play as well as aid in keeping the athlete happy, healthy and engaged

    A preliminary report of an educational intervention in practice management

    BACKGROUND: Practice management education continues to evolve, and little information exists regarding its curriculum design and effectiveness for resident education. We report the results of an exploratory study of a practice management curriculum for primary care residents. METHODS: After performing a needs assessment with a group of primary care residents at Wright State University, we designed a monthly seminar series covering twelve practice management topics. The curriculum consisted of interactive lectures and practice-based application, whenever possible. We descriptively evaluated two cognitive components (practice management knowledge and skills) and the residents' evaluation of the curriculum. RESULTS: The mean correct on the knowledge test for this group of residents was 74% (n = 12) and 91% (n = 12) before and after the curriculum, respectively. The mean scores for the practice management skill assessments were 2.62 before (n = 12), and 3.65 after (n = 12) the curriculum (modified Likert, 1 = strongly disagree, 5 = strongly agree). The residents rated the curriculum consistently high. CONCLUSIONS: This exploratory study suggests that this curriculum may be useful in developing knowledge and skills in practice management for primary care residents. This study suggests further research into evaluation of this curriculum may be informative for practice-based education

    Individual Facial Coloration in Male Eulemur fulvus rufus: A Condition-dependent Ornament?

    Researchers studying individual variation in conspicuous skin coloration in primates have suggested that color indicates male quality. Although primate fur color can also be flamboyant, the potential condition dependence and thus signaling function of fur remains poorly studied. We studied sources of variation in sexually dichromatic facial hair coloration in red-fronted lemurs (Eulemur fulvus rufus). We collected data on 13 adult males in Kirindy Forest, Madagascar, during two study periods in 2006 and 2007, to determine whether variation in facial hair coloration correlates with male age, rank, androgen status, and reproductive success. We quantified facial hair coloration via standardized digital photographs of each male, assessed androgen status using fecal hormone measurements, and obtained data on reproductive success through genetic paternity analyses. Male facial hair coloration showed high individual variation, and baseline coloration was related to individual androgen status but not to any other parameter tested. Color did not reflect rapid androgen changes during the mating season. However, pronounced long-term changes in androgen levels between years were accompanied by changes in facial hair coloration. Our data suggest that facial hair coloration in red-fronted lemur males is under proximate control of androgens and may provide some information about male quality, but it does not correlate with dominance rank or male reproductive success

    The role of clathrin in post-golgi trafficking in toxoplasma gondii

    Apicomplexan parasites are single eukaryotic cells with a highly polarised secretory system that contains unique secretory organelles (micronemes and rhoptries) that are required for host cell invasion. In contrast, the role of the endosomal system is poorly understood in these parasites. With many typical endocytic factors missing, we speculated that endocytosis depends exclusively on a clathrin-mediated mechanism. Intriguingly, in Toxoplasma gondii we were only able to observe the endogenous clathrin heavy chain 1 (CHC1) at the Golgi, but not at the parasite surface. For the functional characterisation of Toxoplasma gondii CHC1 we generated parasite mutants conditionally expressing the dominant negative clathrin Hub fragment and demonstrate that CHC1 is essential for vesicle formation at the trans-Golgi network. Consequently, the functional ablation of CHC1 results in Golgi aberrations, a block in the biogenesis of the unique secretory microneme and rhoptry organelles, and of the pellicle. However, we found no morphological evidence for clathrin mediating endocytosis in these parasites and speculate that they remodelled their vesicular trafficking system to adapt to an intracellular lifestyle

    Repression of Mitochondrial Translation, Respiration and a Metabolic Cycle-Regulated Gene, SLF1, by the Yeast Pumilio-Family Protein Puf3p

    Synthesis and assembly of the mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) system requires genes located both in the nuclear and mitochondrial genomes, but how gene expression is coordinated between these two compartments is not fully understood. One level of control is through regulated expression mitochondrial ribosomal proteins and other factors required for mitochondrial translation and OXPHOS assembly, which are all products of nuclear genes that are subsequently imported into mitochondria. Interestingly, this cadre of genes in budding yeast has in common a 3′-UTR element that is bound by the Pumilio family protein, Puf3p, and is coordinately regulated under many conditions, including during the yeast metabolic cycle. Multiple functions have been assigned to Puf3p, including promoting mRNA degradation, localizing nucleus-encoded mitochondrial transcripts to the outer mitochondrial membrane, and facilitating mitochondria-cytoskeletal interactions and motility. Here we show that Puf3p has a general repressive effect on mitochondrial OXPHOS abundance, translation, and respiration that does not involve changes in overall mitochondrial biogenesis and largely independent of TORC1-mitochondrial signaling. We also identified the cytoplasmic translation factor Slf1p as yeast metabolic cycle-regulated gene that is repressed by Puf3p at the post-transcriptional level and promotes respiration and extension of yeast chronological life span when over-expressed. Altogether, these results should facilitate future studies on which of the many functions of Puf3p is most relevant for regulating mitochondrial gene expression and the role of nuclear-mitochondrial communication in aging and longevity
