Letters, organization and the archive in Elizabeth Montagu’s correspondence
The archive of Elizabeth Montagu’s extant letters is very large, comprising over seven thousand items, of which the great majority are in the Huntington Library in San Marino, California. This essay considers the afterlife of letters in that collection, examining internal evidence of how received letters, copies of letters sent, and sent letters returned were organized within Montagu’s household and by a series of subsequent editors. The essay assesses contemporary accounts of systems for organizing sent and received letters in merchant’s manuals, and in other descriptions of filing practices of the period. Finally, the essay considers the large number of multiples of the same letter in the Montagu Papers, both drafts and copies made by amanuenses and copyists, and the sociable practice of extracirculation. The essay uses Derrida’s essay “Archive Fever” (1995), especially his concepts of consignation and the disintegrative death drive, to examine particular moments when these systems of letter organization reveal themselves and when those systems break down. A 125 GeV SM-like Higgs in the MSSM and the rate
We consider the possibility of a Standard Model (SM)-like Higgs in the
context of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), with a mass of
about 125 GeV and with a production times decay rate into two photons which is
similar or somewhat larger than the SM one. The relatively large value of the
SM-like Higgs mass demands stops in the several hundred GeV mass range with
somewhat large mixing, or a large hierarchy between the two stop masses in the
case that one of the two stops is light. We find that, in general, if the
heaviest stop mass is smaller than a few TeV, the rate of gluon fusion
production of Higgs bosons decaying into two photons tends to be somewhat
suppressed with respect to the SM one in this region of parameters. However, we
show that an enhancement of the photon decay rate may be obtained for light
third generation sleptons with large mixing, which can be naturally obtained
for large values of and sizable values of the Higgsino mass

Counsel for Petitioner has granted his consent to the filing of this brief. Counsel for Respondent, however, has notified counsel for amici that Respondent does not consent.
Amici include national and state professional and voluntary associations concerned with criminA1 proceedings affecting people with mental disabilities. Amici thus have expertise concerning criminal defendants with mental disabilities and the impediments to fair judicial processes which will result if those defendants are required to prove their mental retardation beyond a reasonable doubt.
Amici wish to offer the Court relevant information on the historical development of the beyond a reasonable doubt standard, and why it cannot be applied to a defendant\u27s effort to invoke the constitutional protection of Atkins v. Virginia, 536 U.S. 304 (2002). Amici also wish to present information on contemporary practices and standards when the State imposes a burden of persuasion on defendants with mental retardation who may face execution.
Amici believe that the Georgia statute, providing that crimi1:!a1 defendants must prove their mental retardation beyond a reasonable doubt to invoke the protections of Atkins, impermissibly obstructs the fair adjudication of such constitutional claims.
For the above-stated reasons, we respectfully urge the Court to grant this motion for leave to file the accompanying brief in the present case in support of the petition for certiorari
Complete resummation of chirally-enhanced loop-effects in the MSSM with non-minimal sources of flavor-violation
In this article we present the complete resummation of the leading
chirally-enhanced corrections stemming from gluino-squark, chargino-sfermion
and neutralino-sfermion loops in the MSSM with non-minimal sources of
flavor-violation. We compute the finite renormalization of fermion masses and
the CKM matrix induced by chirality-flipping self-energies. In the decoupling
limit Msusy>>v, which is an excellent approximation to the full theory, we give
analytic results for the effective gaugino(higgsino)-fermion-sfermion and the
Higgs-fermion-fermion vertices. Using these vertices as effective Feynman
rules, all leading chirally-enhanced corrections can consistently be included
into perturbative calculations of Feynman amplitudes. We also give a
generalized parametrization for the bare CKM matrix which extends the classic
Wolfenstein parametrization to the case of complex parameters lambda and A.Comment: 31 pages, 3 figures; typos correcte
A Geometric Approach to CP Violation: Applications to the MCPMFV SUSY Model
We analyze the constraints imposed by experimental upper limits on electric
dipole moments (EDMs) within the Maximally CP- and Minimally Flavour-Violating
(MCPMFV) version of the MSSM. Since the MCPMFV scenario has 6 non-standard
CP-violating phases, in addition to the CP-odd QCD vacuum phase \theta_QCD,
cancellations may occur among the CP-violating contributions to the three
measured EDMs, those of the Thallium, neutron and Mercury, leaving open the
possibility of relatively large values of the other CP-violating observables.
We develop a novel geometric method that uses the small-phase approximation as
a starting point, takes the existing EDM constraints into account, and enables
us to find maximal values of other CP-violating observables, such as the EDMs
of the Deuteron and muon, the CP-violating asymmetry in b --> s \gamma decay,
and the B_s mixing phase. We apply this geometric method to provide upper
limits on these observables within specific benchmark supersymmetric scenarios,
including extensions that allow for a non-zero \theta_QCD.Comment: 34 pages, 16 eps figures, to appear in JHE
Breast cancer histologic grading using digital microscopy: concordance and outcome association
Aims: Virtual microscopy utilising digital whole slide imaging (WSI) is increasingly used in breast pathology. Histologic grade is one of the strongest prognostic factors in breast cancer (BC). This study aims at investigating the agreement between BC grading using traditional light microscopy (LM) and digital whole slide imaging (WSI) with consideration of reproducibility and impact on outcome prediction.
Methods: A large (n=1675) well-characterised cohort of BC originally graded by LM was re-graded using WSI. Two separate virtual-based grading sessions (V1 and V2) were performed with a three months washout period. Outcome was assessed using breast cancer specific and distant metastasis free survival.
Results: The concordance between LM grading and WSI was strong (LM/SWI Cramer’s V: V1=0.576, and V2=0.579). The agreement regarding grade components was as follows: Tubule formation=0.538, Pleomorphism=0.422 and Mitosis=0.514. Greatest discordance was observed between adjacent grades whereas high/low grade discordance was uncommon (1.5%). The intra-observer agreement for the two WSI sessions was substantial for grade (V1/V2 Cramer’s V=0.676; kappa=0.648) and grade components (Cramer’s V T=0.628, P=0.573 and M=0.580). Grading using both platforms showed strong association with outcome (All p-value <0.001). Although mitotic scores assessed using both platforms were strongly associated with outcome, WSI tends to underestimate mitotic counts.
Conclusions: Virtual microscopy is a reliable and reproducible method for assessing BC histologic grade. Regardless of the observer or assessment platform, histologic grade is a significant predictor of outcome. Continuing advances in imaging technology could potentially provide improved performance of WSI BC grading and in particular mitotic count assessment
CP violation in sbottom decays
We study CP asymmetries in two-body decays of bottom squarks into charginos
and tops. These asymmetries probe the SUSY CP phases of the sbottom and the
chargino sector in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We identify the
MSSM parameter space where the CP asymmetries are sizeable, and analyze the
feasibility of their observation at the LHC. As a result, potentially
detectable CP asymmetries in sbottom decays are found, which motivates further
detailed experimental studies for probing the SUSY CP phases.Comment: 29 pages, 7 figure
