    Irritable bowel syndrome in Iranian young adults: A survey among medical students

    A cross-sectional study on medical students at the Golestan University of Medical Sciences in Iran was conducted to determine the prevalence of IBS and to assess the symptom subgroups based on the predominant bowel habit. A vaild self report questionnaries based on ROM II criteria was administered to all the medical students. Comparison between groups was assessed using the Chi-square and Fishers Exatct analytical tests. Of 708 questionnaires, 513 complete responses were received (response rate of 87.4%). Fifty (10.6%) subjects reported symptoms consistent with the diagnosis of IBS, predominantly in women. Forty (77.4%) and three (7.1%) were of the constipation-predominant and diarrhea-predominant subgroups, respectively. Six (12.2%) subjects fell into the non-specific IBS subgroup. The mean age of the IBS group was 22.6±2 years. IBS rate was higher in married students (15.2%) than singles (9.7%). There were no significant differences regarding sex, age, marital status and place of residence in the IBS and non-IBS groups. 57.1% (n = 28) of the medical students had consulted their healthcare practitioner for their symptoms. Hospitalization and endoscopic procedures were reported in 3 (6.1%) of cases. Self-medication was reported in 55.1% (n = 27) of subjects. Based on this study, the prevalence of IBS in young Iranian population are higher than previously expected that deserves greater care and further investigation

    α:Non-α and Gγ:Aγ globin chain ratios in thalassemia intermedia patients treated with hydroxyurea

    Objectives: To elucidate the possible ways by which hydroxyurea molecules affect globin chain (α or β-like) synthesis. Methods: A total of 23 thalassemia intermedia patients (13 male and 10 female) aged between 5 and 26 years were treated for five months with 15 mg/(kg-day) of hydroxyurea. Hemoglobins electrophoresis and globin chain electrophoresis was performed on each sample at different time points before and during the treatment. Results: Fetal hemoglobin increased significantly in most patients and average episodes of transfusion decreased. Both Gγ and Aγ-globin chains increased significantly and α-globin:Nonα-globin chain as well as Gγ-globin:Aγ globin chains ratios decreased. Conclusions: Improvement in α:non-α ratio and consequent decrease of free α-globin chain might be the cause of beneficial effects of hydroxyurea therapy. Two patients who felt better didn't show significant increase in their fetal hemoglobin level, and this is in contradiction with the hypothesis claiming that the HbF level increase is the cause of such therapeutic effect. In spite of the unclear mechanism of action of this drug, hydroxyurea therapy had noticeable impacts on thalassemia intermedia and also sickle cell disease and even patients suffering from thalassemia major. © 2014 by the Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine

    First report of oligodendroglioma in a sheep : clinical communication

    Oligodendrogliomas occur most commonly in the dog, but have also been reported in cattle, horses and cats. A 1-year-old sheep with neurological disturbances, including blindness, ataxia, circling and incoordination was referred to the veterinary clinic of Shahid Bahonar University of Kerman. Following euthanasia and necropsy, a soft, relatively well-demarcated mass was observed in the white and grey matter of the right cerebral hemisphere, close to the sylvian fissure in the right cerebral hemisphere. Microscopic examination revealed a sheet of densely packed tumour cells with hyperchromatic nuclei, lightly staining cytoplasm and characteristic perinuclear halo effect which is consistent with a diagnosis of oligodendroglioma. This is the 1st report of oligodendroglioma in sheep

    Genome-wide study identifies association between HLA-B∗55:01 and Self-Reported Penicillin Allergy

    Hypersensitivity reactions to drugs are often unpredictable and can be life threatening, underscoring a need for understanding their underlying mechanisms and risk factors. The extent to which germline genetic variation influences the risk of commonly reported drug allergies such as penicillin allergy remains largely unknown. We extracted data from the electronic health records of more than 600,000 participants from the UK, Estonian, and Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s BioVU biobanks to study the role of genetic variation in the occurrence of self-reported penicillin hypersensitivity reactions. We used imputed SNP to HLA typing data from these cohorts to further fine map the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) association and replicated our results in 23andMe’s research cohort involving a total of 1.12 million individuals. Genome-wide meta-analysis of penicillin allergy revealed two loci, including one located in the HLA region on chromosome 6. This signal was further fine-mapped to the HLA-B∗55:01 allele (OR 1.41 95% CI 1.33–1.49, p value 2.04 × 10−31) and confirmed by independent replication in 23andMe’s research cohort (OR 1.30 95% CI 1.25–1.34, p value 1.00 × 10−47). The lead SNP was also associated with lower lymphocyte counts and in silico follow-up suggests a potential effect on T-lymphocytes at HLA-B∗55:01. We also observed a significant hit in PTPN22 and the GWAS results correlated with the genetics of rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis.     Renal cortex copper concentration in acute copper poisoning in calves

    The aim of this study was to estimate the diagnostic value of renal cortex copper (Cu) concentration in clinical cases of acute copper poisoning (ACP). A total of 97 calves that died due to subcutaneous copper administration were compiled in eleven farms. At least, one necropsy was conducted on each farm and samples for complementary analysis were taken. The degree of autolysis in each necropsy was evaluated. The cases appeared on extensive grazing calf breeding and intensive feedlot farms, in calves of 60 to 200 kg body weight. Mortality varied from 0.86 to 6.96 %, on the farms studied. The first succumbed calf was found on the farms between 6 and 72 hours after the susbcutaneous Cu administration. As discrepancies regarding the reference value arose, the local value (19.9 parts per million) was used, confirming the diagnosis of acute copper poisoning in 93% of the analyzed kidney samples. These results confirm the value of analysis of the cortical kidney Cu concentration for the diagnosis of acute copper poisoning
