    Discrete Feynman propagator for the Weyl quantum walk in 2+1 dimensions

    Recently quantum walks have been considered as a possible fundamental description of the dynamics of relativistic quantum fields. Within this scenario we derive the analytical solution of the Weyl walk in 2+1 dimensions. We present a discrete path-integral formulation of the Feynman propagator based on the binary encoding of paths on the lattice. The derivation exploits a special feature of the Weyl walk, that occurs also in other dimensions, that is closure under multiplication of the set of the walk transition matrices. This result opens the perspective of a similar solution in the 3+1 case.Comment: 5 page

    Hierarchical structures of cactus spines that aid in the directional movement of dew droplets

    Three species of cactus whose spines act as dew harvesters were chosen for this study: Copiapoa cinerea var. haseltoniana, Mammillaria columbiana subsp. yucatanensis and Parodia mammulosa and compared with Ferocactus wislizenii whose spines do not perform as dew harvesters. Time-lapse snapshots of C. cinerea showed movement of dew droplets from spine tips to their base, even against gravity. Spines emanating from one of the areoles of C. cinerea were submerged in water laced with fluorescent nanoparticles and this particular areole with its spines and a small area of stem was removed and imaged. These images clearly showed that fluorescent water had moved into the stem of the plant. Lines of vascular bundles radiating inwards from the surface areoles (from where the spines emanate) to the core of the stem were detected using magnetic resonance imaging, with the exception of F. wislizenii that does not harvest dew on its spines. Spine microstructures were examined using SEM images and surface roughness measurements (Ra and Rz) taken of the spines of C. cinerea. It was found that a roughness gradient created by tapered microgrooves existed that could potentially direct surface water from a spine tip to its base

    Telecommunications policy issues rarely make news, much less mobilize thousands of people. Yet this has been occurring in the United States around efforts to introduce "Net neutrality" regulation. A similar grassroots mobilization has not developed in the United Kingdom or elsewhere in Europe. We develop a comparative analysis of U.S. and UK Net neutrality debates with an eye toward identifying the arguments for and against regulation, how those arguments differ between the countries, and what the implications of those differences are for the Internet. Drawing on mass media, advocacy, and regulatory discourses, we find that local regulatory precedents as well as cultural factors contribute to both agenda setting and framing of Net neutrality. The differences between national discourses provide a way to understand both the structural differences between regulatory cultures and the substantive differences between policy interpretations, both of which must be reconciled for the Internet to continue to thrive as a global medium

    Un proceso productivo fue diseñado para el aprovechamiento continuo de viruta de cuero del proceso de curtido para ser utilizado como materia prima para elaborar un producto reciclado (cuero reconstituido). Su objetivo es reutilizar de forma sostenible el residuo de viruta de cuero del proceso de curtido sin generar nuevos residuos sólidos, ya que los potenciales residuos sólidos generados podrán ser nuevamente utilizados en el proceso productivo diseñado. Este proceso está dividido en tres unidades, la primera de acondicionamiento de la materia prima que proporciona las características a la viruta de cuero para ser procesada; la segunda de mezclado y moldeado que mezcla viruta de cuero, agua, resina y; la tercera de prensado y secado que proporciona las propiedades físicas y mecánica para la plancha desarrollada. Esta propuesta permite obtener un proceso ecoamigable ya que va a permitir el uso de viruta de cuero como materia prima elaborar cuero reconstituido; así mismo identificar y definir los parámetros de operación, así como las composiciones respectivas de viruta, agua y resina para la formación de la plancha. Los resultados preliminares evidencian el uso potencial de la viruta de cuero como materia prima para cuero reconstituido sin generar impactos negativos en el ambiente

    Survival probability and order statistics of diffusion on disordered media

    We investigate the first passage time t_{j,N} to a given chemical or Euclidean distance of the first j of a set of N>>1 independent random walkers all initially placed on a site of a disordered medium. To solve this order-statistics problem we assume that, for short times, the survival probability (the probability that a single random walker is not absorbed by a hyperspherical surface during some time interval) decays for disordered media in the same way as for Euclidean and some class of deterministic fractal lattices. This conjecture is checked by simulation on the incipient percolation aggregate embedded in two dimensions. Arbitrary moments of t_{j,N} are expressed in terms of an asymptotic series in powers of 1/ln N which is formally identical to those found for Euclidean and (some class of) deterministic fractal lattices. The agreement of the asymptotic expressions with simulation results for the two-dimensional percolation aggregate is good when the boundary is defined in terms of the chemical distance. The agreement worsens slightly when the Euclidean distance is used.Comment: 8 pages including 9 figure

    Variational convergence of gradient flows and rate-independent evolutions in metric spaces

    We study the asymptotic behaviour of families of gradient flows in a general metric setting, when the metric-dissipation potentials degenerate in the limit to a dissipation with linear growth. We present a general variational definition of BV solutions to metric evolutions, showing the different characterization of the solution in the absolutely continuous regime, on the singular Cantor part, and along the jump transitions. By using tools of metric analysis, BV functions and blow-up by time rescaling, we show that this variational notion is stable with respect to a wide class of perturbations involving energies, distances, and dissipation potentials. As a particular application, we show that BV solutions to rate-independent problems arise naturally as a limit of pp-gradient flows, p>1p>1, when the exponents pp converge to 1
