Clinical disorders affecting mesopic vision
Vision in the mesopic range is affected by a number of inherited and acquired clinical disorders. We review these conditions and summarize the historical background, describing the clinical characteristics alongside the genetic basis and molecular biological mechanisms giving rise to rod and cone dysfunction relevant to twilight vision. The current diagnostic gold standards for each disease are discussed and curative and symptomatic treatment strategies are summarized
Malignant gastrointestinal stromal tumor presenting with hemoperitoneum in puerperium: report of a case with review of the literature
The miR-17/92 cluster: a comprehensive update on its genomics, genetics, functions and increasingly important and numerous roles in health and disease.
The miR-17/92 cluster is among the best-studied microRNA clusters. Interest in the cluster and its members has been increasing steadily and the number of publications has grown exponentially since its discovery with more than 1000 articles published in 2012 alone. Originally found to be involved in tumorigenesis, research work in recent years has uncovered unexpected roles for its members in a wide variety of settings that include normal development, immune diseases, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases and aging. In light of its ever-increasing importance and ever-widening regulatory roles, we review here the latest body of knowledge on the cluster\u27s involvement in health and disease as well as provide a novel perspective on the full spectrum of protein-coding and non-coding transcripts that are likely regulated by its members

Severe autosomal recessive retinitis pigmentosa maps to chromosome 1p13.3–p21.2 between D1S2896 and D1S457 but outside ABCA4
A severe form of autosomal recessive retinitis pigmentosa (arRP) was identified in a large Pakistani family ascertained in the Punjab province of Pakistan. All affected individuals in the family had night blindness in early childhood, early complete loss of useful vision, and typical RP fundus changes plus macular degeneration. After exclusion of known arRP loci, a genome-wide scan was performed using microsatellite markers at about 10 cM intervals and calculating two-point lod scores. PCR cycle dideoxynucleotide sequencing was used to sequence candidate genes inside the linked region for mutations. RP in this family shows linkage to markers in a 10.5 cM (8.9 Mbp) region of chromosome 1p13.3–p21.2 between D1S2896 and D1S457. D1S485 yields the highest lod score of 6.54 at θ=0. Sequencing the exons and intron–exon boundaries of five candidate genes and six ESTs in this region, OLFM3, GNAI3, LOC126987, FLJ25070, DKFZp586G0123, AV729694, BU662869, BU656110, BU171991, BQ953690, and CA397743, did not identify any causative mutations. This novel locus lies approximately 4.9 cM (7.1 Mbp) from ABCA4, which is excluded from the linked region. Identification and study of this gene may help to elucidate the phenotypic diversity of arRP mapping to this region.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/47597/1/439_2005_Article_54.pd

Polymorphism of the tryptophan hydroxylase 2 (TPH2) gene is associated with chimpanzee neuroticism
Abstract In the brain, serotonin production is controlled by tryptophan hydroxylase 2 (TPH2), a genotype. Previous studies found that mutations on the TPH2 locus in humans were associated with depression and studies of mice and studies of rhesus macaques have shown that the TPH2 locus was involved with aggressive behavior. We previously reported a functional single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the form of an amino acid substitution, Q468R, in the chimpanzee TPH2 gene coding region. In the present study we tested whether this SNP was associated with neuroticism in captive and wild-born chimpanzees living in Japan and Guinea, respectively. Even after correcting for multiple tests (Bonferroni p = 0.05/6 = 0.008), Q468R was significantly related to higher neuroticism (b = 0.372, p = 0.005). This study is the first to identify a genotype linked to a personality trait in chimpanzees. In light of the prior studies on humans, mice, and rhesus macaques, these findings suggest that the relationship between neuroticism and TPH2 has deep phylogenetic roots
