    Automatic Detection of Local Cloud Systems from MODIS Data

    Abstract This paper describes an algorithm that is aimed at the identification of cloudy and clear pixels in Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images to support earth science and nowcasting applications. The process from geolocated and calibrated data allows one to obtain cloud masks with four clear-sky confidence levels for five different cloud system types. The technique has been developed using the MODIS cloud-mask algorithm heritage, but the threshold tests performed have been executed without comparing solar reflectances and thermal brightness temperatures with thresholds determined in advance, but instead with thresholds carried out from classification methods. The main advantage of this technique is that the thresholds are obtained directly from the images. Seventy-five percent of the spectral signatures (known as end members) derived from the winter images in the detection of the various cloud types and 80% of the summer end members can be considered as being well discriminated. Furthermore, it seems that the end members characterizing the different cloud systems are constant throughout the various seasons of the year (they vary with a confidence level of 60%), whereas those describing clear sky change in a notable manner (the associated confidence level is 99%). The algorithm is able to produce cloud masks pertinent to limited regions at a mesoscale level, which may be a key factor for nowcasting purposes. This work shows that the use of end members and spectral angles, as opposed to spectral thresholds, should be carefully examined because of the fact that it might be simpler or that higher performances may be achieved at a regional scale

    Corporate social responsibility and circular economy from the perspective of consumers: A cross-cultural analysis in the cosmetic industry

    Corporate social responsibility (CSR) and circular economy (CE) have assumed considerable importance in the efforts for sustainable development. However, some consumers do not positively respond to CSR and CE activities, and few studies have analyzed the consumers' perspective about the topics. This study investigates consumer knowledge and perception about CSR and CE and their willingness to pay (WTP) for products from companies that follow these concepts, examining differences according to demographic characteristics. We carried out a survey with 302 Brazilian and Italian consumers of cosmetic products. Our results show that most consumers have a low understanding of CSR and CE and a low perception of the socio-environmental initiatives of companies that follow CSR and CE concepts. Nevertheless, most consumers show WTP for products from companies that follow these concepts. We identified demographic variables that allowed us to relate the profile of consumers with their knowledge about CSR and CE and their WTP.     Circular Economy Impact Analysis on Stock Performances: An Empirical Comparison with the Euro Stoxx 50® ESG Index

    Environmental issues have a considerable impact in all economic sectors, also influencing financial markets. As a result, environmental, social, and governance (ESG) awareness is rising in the financial sector. In this perspective, the concept of circular economy (CE) assumes central relevance. The aim of our study is to investigate the relationship between CE strategies and market performance; to this end, we use ESG scores as a proxy for CE. Our initial assumption is that since CE is a component of the “E” factor—in that it can generate positive and measurable environmental impacts—then it can be associated with the ESG score. Therefore, we can methodologically overcome the lack of a specific score related to CE. We use a preselection model based on historical performance by verifying the percentages of the presence of stocks in the two selected indices, namely ESG Euro Stoxx 50® and Euro Stoxx 50-ESG. Overall, we find that ESG profiles have a positive impact on stock performance, although ESG scores do not express higher performance per se. Furthermore, our analysis shows that, to date, there is no evidence that CE initiatives can influence stock returns

    Redesign in the textile industry: Proposal of a methodology for the insertion of circular thinking in product development processes

    Despite the growing attention toward negative environmental impacts generated by the textile industry, companies face challenges in achieving sustainable and circular economy (CE) transition. The literature has so far lacked a systematic effort to analyze how textile companies can insert CE elements in their new product development process (NPD), especially regarding the proposition of methodologies that can better assist the companies in this regard. This study aims to identify good green innovation and CE practices in NPD adopted by textile companies and propose a methodology from Design Thinking (DT) to insert circular thinking in NPD. To that end, we conducted the research in two steps: (i) narrative bibliographic review and (ii) field research. The bibliographic review was conducted in the “Web of Science”, “Scopus”, and “Scielo” databases. The field research was executed with four textile companies. Our results show that companies tend to consider socio-environmental aspects at different stages of the development of new products. However, there is opportunities for improvement, especially through the use of ideas from DT. The proposed methodology is composed of two main cycles: the design cycle (DT stages) and the consumption cycle (subsequent stages). It encompasses the five main stages of the DT and the three macro phases of NPD of the textile industry. The ideas coming from the DT, especially creativity, focus on the user and stakeholder integration, assist in the development of innovative and circular solutions. The methodology presents how companies can work on reuse, recycling, and manufacturing issues, so that CE occurs. In the end, we evaluated, together with experts, the applicability of the proposed use of ideas of DT in practical cases. The research advances the discussions on NPD in the textile sector, especially on its potential to contribute to the transition to CE. It explores how DT assists in inserting circular thinking into the NPD and presents alternatives for companies to develop circular products and insert green innovations in their NPD

    Subtle local structural variations in oxygen deficient niobium germanate thin film glasses as revealed by x-ray absorption spectroscopy

NPG glasses are promising candidates for applications in nonlinear optical devices because they exhibit interesting optical characteristics such as high nonlinear third order optical susceptibility. In this work NPG glasses were prepared with pulsed laser deposition method with varying oxygen partial pressure to induce thin films with different oxygen stoichiometry. Previously, it was shown that oxygen stoichiometry has a very important effect to produce unusual high optical susceptibility. Detailed EXAFS and XANES analyses in a series of NPG thin films revealed the subtle variations in the local environment around Nb atoms and the Nb oxidation states caused by oxygen deficiencies.     Novel compound mutations in the mitochondrial translation elongation factor (TSFM) gene cause severe cardiomyopathy with myocardial fibro-adipose replacement

    Primary mitochondrial dysfunction is an under-appreciated cause of cardiomyopathy, especially when cardiac symptoms are the unique or prevalent manifestation of disease. Here, we report an unusual presentation of mitochondrial cardiomyopathy, with dilated phenotype and pathologic evidence of biventricular fibro-adipose replacement, in a 33-year old woman who underwent cardiac transplant. Whole exome sequencing revealed two novel compound heterozygous variants in the TSFM gene, coding for the mitochondrial translation elongation factor EF-Ts. This protein participates in the elongation step of mitochondrial translation by binding and stabilizing the translation elongation factor Tu (EF-Tu). Bioinformatics analysis predicted a destabilization of the EF-Ts variants complex with EF-Tu, in agreement with the dramatic steady-state level reduction of both proteins in the clinically affected myocardium, which demonstrated a combined respiratory chain enzyme deficiency. In patient fibroblasts, the decrease of EF-Ts was paralleled by up-regulation of EF-Tu and induction of genes involved in mitochondrial biogenesis, along with increased expression of respiratory chain subunits and normal oxygen consumption rate. Our report extends the current picture of morphologic phenotypes associated with mitochondrial cardiomyopathies and confirms the heart as a main target of TSFM dysfunction. The compensatory response detected in patient fibroblasts might explain the tissue-specific expression of TSFM-associated disease

    Er3+-doped fluorotellurite thin film glasses with improved photoluminescence emission at 1.53 µm

    7 págs.; 5 figs.; 4 tabs.Transparent oxyfluoride tellurite thin film glasses have been produced at room temperature by pulsed laser deposition in O2 atmosphere from an Er-doped TeO2–ZnO–ZnF2 bulk glass. Thin film glasses present high refractive index (n≥1.95) and good transparency (T≥80%) in the visible (λ>400 nm) and near infrared range. However, their photoluminescence (PL) performance at 1.5 μm is poor. Thermal annealing at moderate temperatures (T≤315 °C), well below glass crystallization, increases the PL intensity by more than one order of magnitude as well as the PL lifetime up to τ≈3.3 ms. Film glasses present a larger fraction of TeO3 trigonal pyramids than the bulk glass and a very large OH− content.
