Globular Cluster Formation in the Virgo Cluster
Metal poor globular clusters (MPGCs) are a unique probe of the early
universe, in particular the reionization era. Systems of globular clusters in
galaxy clusters are particularly interesting as it is in the progenitors of
galaxy clusters that the earliest reionizing sources first formed. Although the
exact physical origin of globular clusters is still debated, it is generally
admitted that globular clusters form in early, rare dark matter peaks (Moore et
al. 2006; Boley et al. 2009). We provide a fully numerical analysis of the
Virgo cluster globular cluster system by identifying the present day globular
cluster system with exactly such early, rare dark matter peaks. A popular
hypothesis is that that the observed truncation of blue metal poor globular
cluster formation is due to reionization (Spitler et al. 2012; Boley et al.
2009; Brodie & Strader 2006); adopting this view, constraining the formation
epoch of MPGCs provides a complementary constraint on the epoch of
reionization. By analyzing both the line of sight velocity dispersion and the
surface density distribution of the present day distribution we are able to
constrain the redshift and mass of the dark matter peaks. We find and quantify
a dependence on the chosen line of sight of these quantities, whose strength
varies with redshift, and coupled with star formation efficiency arguments find
a best fitting formation mass and redshift of and . We predict intracluster MPGCs in
the Virgo cluster. Our results confirm the techniques pioneered by Moore et al.
(2006) when applied to the the Virgo cluster and extend and refine the analytic

Thus, quinolones are an important class of antibacterials; these agents generally consist of a 1-subtituted-1,4-dihydro-4-oxopyridine-3-carboxylic acid moiety combined with an aromatic or heteroaromatic ring fused at the 5- and 6-position. Aims: To determine the binding of quinolones to DNA gyrase of Escherichia coli. Methods: An analysis was performed using an in silico approach to determine, by docking calculations and energy descriptors, the conformer of 4‐oxo‐1,4‐dihydroquinoline skeleton that forms the most stable complex with DNA gyrase of E. coli. Results: The complex shows that the pose of the quinolones coincides with the amino acid residues Asp87, Thr88, Arg91 and Met92, which is expected to be critical in the binding of quinolones to DNA gyrase of E. coli. A series of quinolones were computationally designed, and the interactions between the quinolones and the amino acid residues of the DNA gyrase were calculated. Exploring the challenges and responsibilities of mutual engagement within participatory action research
This paper draws on a London-based exploratory action research study into the factors affecting the engagement in UK National Health Service (NHS) clinical trials of African patients and the wider African communities. The paper argues for the use of participatory qualitative methodologies in relation to centralizing the voices of those who are mostly easily marginalized by mainstream UK health and social care policies. The paper describes how the co-researchers in this study (professional/lay members from within the affected communities and academic researchers) shaped the study methodology. The challenges and responsibilities of the co-researchers within this process of mutual engagement are further described in relation to identifying the perspectives of all co-researchers within a methodology that strives to mutually engage diverse communities of NHS clinicians, academic researchers and service users. Drawing on the findings from the data analysis, the paper will discuss emergent issues that are of particular relevance for New Labour’s policies on social exclusion, cultural competence and NHS service user involvement
The Porphyromonas gingivalis hemagglutinins HagB and HagC are major mediators of adhesion and biofilm formation
Porphyromonas gingivalis is a bacterium associated with chronic periodontitis that possesses a family of genes encoding hemagglutinins required for heme acquisition. In this study we generated ΔhagB and ΔhagC mutants in strain W83 and demonstrate that both hagB and hagC are required for adherence to oral epithelial cells. Unexpectedly, a double ΔhagB/ΔhagC mutant had less severe adherence defects than either of the single mutants, but was found to exhibit increased expression of the gingipain-encoding genes rgpA and kgp, suggesting that a ΔhagB/ΔhagC mutant is only viable in populations of cells that exhibit increased expression of genes involved in heme acquisition. Disruption of hagB in the fimbriated strain ATCC33277 demonstrated that HagB is also required for stable attachment of fimbriated bacteria to oral epithelial cells. Mutants of hagC were also found to form defective single and multi-species biofilms that had reduced biomass relative to biofilms formed by the wild-type strain. This study highlights the hitherto unappreciated importance of these genes in oral colonization and biofilm formation

The patterns of muscle action during human locomotion have
been investigated for several decades. Lower extremity
electromyographic activity in walking was investigated by Bartholomew and the Prosthetic Research Group at Berkeley in 1953. (1) Others investigated the actions of specific muscles during various leg movements. Basmajian and LeBan et al. (6) examined the electromyographic action of the iliopsoas muscle. These studies have led to the investigation of running. Saito et aI., (10) presented temporal data on the gait cycle of running. James and Brubaker (5) presented a descriptive analysis of running. Other researchers have directed their work toward sprinting: Fenn (4) investigated frictional and kinetic factors in 1930, and Dillman (3) and Ralph Mann (7) used kinetic analysis. Mann and Hagy (9) and Mann et aI. (8) investigated temporal and electromyographic patterns of walking, running and sprinting. Performance of the Colorado wind-profiling network, part 1.5A
The Wave Propagation Laboratory (WPL) has operated a network of radar wind Profilers in Colorado for about 1 year. The network consists of four VHF (50-MHz) radars and a UHF (915-MHz) radar. The Platteville VHF radar was developed by the Aeronomy Laboratory (AL) and has been operated jointly by WPL and AL for several years. The other radars were installed between February and May 1983. Experiences with these radars and some general aspects of tropospheric wind measurements with Doppler radar are discussed
Distant X-ray Galaxies: Insights from the Local Population
A full understanding of the origin of the hard X-ray background requires a
complete and accurate census of the distant galaxies that produce it.
Unfortunately, distant X-ray galaxies tend to be very faint at all wavelengths,
which hinders efforts to perform this census. This chapter discusses the
insights that can be obtained through comparison of the distant population to
local X-ray galaxies, whose properties are well characterized. Such comparisons
will ultimately aid investigations into the cosmic evolution of supermassive

‘‘There’s so much more to it than what I initially thought’’: Stepping into researchers’ shoes with a class activity in a first year psychology survey course
In psychology, it is widely agreed that research methods, although central to the discipline, are particularly challenging to learn and teach, particularly at introductory level. This pilot study explored the potential of embedding a student-conducted research activity in a one-semester undergraduate Introduction to Psychology survey course, with the aims of (a) engaging students with the topic of research methods; (b) developing students’ comprehension and application of research methods concepts; and (c) building students’ ability to link research with theory. The research activity explored shoe ownership, examining gender differences and relationships with age, and linking to theories of gender difference and of consumer identity. The process of carrying out the research and reflecting on it created a contextualized, active learning environment in which students themselves raised many issues that research methods lectures seek to cover. Students also wrote richer assignments than standard first year mid-term essay
